GeForce3 vs Radeon OS X Quake3 Performance in Dual G4/800 System:
Published: 9/14/2001

Jaron Wilson sent results of GeForce3 vs Radeon Quake3 tests in OS X 10.0.4 on his new DP 800 system. (I created a graph of the results to more clearly show the differences)

" I have been able to run a few tests comparing the GeForce 3 to the Radeon in the dual 800... I've only done Quake 3 results, version 1.29f under OS X, but I think the numbers give a pretty good idea about how much better the GeForce 3 is."

16 Bit Mode Tests:

32 Bit Mode Tests:

" For some reason, every time I tried to select 1152x864 as the resolution, the resolution switched to 640x480. Every other resolution worked fine, however. This was the case with both the GeForce 3 and Radeon. I recall that there was very little difference between the two cards in a dual 500 with only 2x AGP and 100MHz system bus, but quite obviously, the GeForce 3 is a vastly superior card in a system capable of feeding it. I just can't wait to see how well Quake 3 will run under 10.1, with the supposed 20% increase in OpenGL performance!
Jarod"

A previous article here compared performance in OS 9 and OS X Quake3 of these two cards (and an MX card) using a Dual G4/533 system.

If you missed the recent news, I created an article with Jarod's comments/photos/comparisons of the DP800 system w/ZIP drive to his previous Dual G4/500.

Earlier this spring, I included Radeon vs GeForce3 performance tests (Games as well as 2D/scrolling, etc.) in the review of a G4/733 digital audio system. (Includes GeForce3/Radeon tests and comparisons in a Dual G4/500 system also, as well as a complete list of resolutions, game compatibility notes and applications performance comparisons).
