How To: Unreal Tournament Mutators

Customize Mac Unreal Tournament with Mutator Mods

[What Are Mutators? A mutator is a modification to UT that affects the player, weapons or some other aspect of the game. For instance one Mutator (404 Giants) makes the player bigger the more he scores frags on other players, smaller each time he dies. Many of them add new weapons or modify the characteristics of existing ones. See UT Center Mutators page for a large list of mutators, what they do, and a rating of each.-Mike (Note: utf.utcenter.com not responding as of Nov 18th. This link is still the file link at http://www.utcenter.com/. I tried emailing them about it but every email address I used on the 'Contact Us' page bounced back with a DNS error.) ]

Ever wonder what that "Mutator" button does in the options screen for a new game of Unreal Tournament? Mutators are what were previously known as "mod" files in Unreal. They allow third party programers to create add-ons for your fragging pleasure. Mutators range from new weapons to changes in gravity to completely new rules for specific game modes. Even though UT is still only a demo on all platforms, there are allready many mutators which have been created and are just waiting for you to download and install.

To install a mutator, there are 2 tools you will need: an un-zipping utility such as Zipit or Stuffit Expander, and the Unreal umod installer application which can be found at http://www.westlakeinteractive.com/download0013.html (yes, the old Unreal umod installer works with UT). Once the Umod installer has been downloaded, make sure you put the application in the same folder as your Unreal Tournament application.

Once you have these two programs, you need to find a mutator to download. A good source for Unreal Tournament add-ons is www.utcenter.com (check in their files section under mutators). [Some readers seemed to have missed the correct link - so here is the page with the mutators listed-Mike] For an example, I will use the Soul Harvest mutator. Once you have downloaded the mutator, check to see what type of file it is. Most mutators are .umod files. In this case, simply drag and drop the umod file on to the Umod Installer application in your UT folder. Some dialog boxes will appear asking you if you really want to install it, click ok, and away the installer goes. If it is a zip file, you must uncompress it using your un-zipping utility, then use the Umod Installer program on the umod file it uncompresses.

Now that you have installed the mutator, its time to see it in action. Launch UT, and start a new practice game. The options dialog that comes up will have a button labeled "Mutators"

Now (you guessed it) click the button, and a list of mutators which have been installed will appear.

Find the mutator which you want to use, double click it, and it will move to the Mutators Used list. You can select as many as you wish to use for the game.

Now click close, and then start the game! Its as easy as that!
