Your Source for Performance News and Reviews!Effects of G3 Backside Cache on Unreal Performance
-how much difference does a 1MB vs 512k card make? -
Published: 10/5/98The two following graphics show the benefit of a faster and bigger cache on Unreal speed rendering. The tests were done using the HQ and LQ settings found in the Xlr8 Unreal Toolkit 1.04. The presence of the 1 MB faster cache results in a 12% speed increase over the slower 512k cache with the LQ setting . With the HQ setting, the difference is a bit less significant at 7%. You may notice also that the two systems were using a different 3DFX accelerator card. One was using the Techworks power3D (4MB) while the other the Canopus Pure3D LX with 6MB. It is possible that the extra 2 MB of VRAM on the Pure3D equipped G3 might have influenced the results. If you have a G3 running at a similar speed with a 1MB cache G3 CPU Card, send me the results and I will update the graphic. - Frank [thanks to MK for his benchmarks]
[Note - it would be better to have the 512K cache running at the same cache speed as the 1MB model, but most popular 512k cache cards don't allow speeds that fast.-Mike]
