Reader Comments on Iomega Firewire PeerLess Drive Performance:
Published: 12/5/2001
" Hey Mike,
I recently got a chance to review a Peerless Drive. I was less than impressed. First off, I didnít buy it, my friend let me take it for a spin. The $399.95 price tag was a little much for me to handle for a 20 GB Hard Drive with Dock. I plugged in the power cord, then plugged in the dock to my TiBook 400 (512 MB RAM, 20 GB IBM Hard Drive). I then went to the Apple System Profiler (running Mac OS X 10.1.2 Build 5P28) and it was recognized as ěIomega Peerless Driveî (Just the dock alone on the Firewire Bus). I then inserted a 20 GB Peerless Media Drive and it mounted without a hitch as a blank 18.6 GB Disk.

I then transferred over 10 GB of Data from my Hard Drive to the Peerless, and with no other programs open, it had a peak of 11 Mbps with a sustained transfer of 10.3 Mbps. I then inserted a DVD-ROM and watched it in a smaller window and saw the transfer rate go down dramatically with a Peak transfer rate of 3.5 Mbps and a sustained transfer rate around 2.9 Mbps.

During the transfer, the giant half sphere on the front that boasts the driveís name blinks neon blue to show disk activity. As far as I could tell there is no way to turn this off and it is VERY VERY annoying. When you drag the Peerless drive to the trash it ejects itself out of the Peerless dock, just as one would expect it to.

Overall, a pretty cheaply made product, you can see the system board inside the dock through the ports and other openings and it comes in three pieces which come apart very easily. The dock itself was pretty light and it was pretty hard to keep it from falling over from the weight of the firewire cable coming out of the back of it, also keeping with Tradition, Iomega has shipped the smallest firewire cable it could possibly ship with this drive. Overall, very dissatisfied.
Keep up the good site,
iDriveX "
