"OS 8.5.1 Fixes and Updates - Apple Readme file"
12/05/98

[This article was posted in advance of the official release of 8.5.1. To download the official release see Apple's Software Updates page] All of us with OS 8.5 are eagerly awaiting the 8.5.1 update. Several readers were kind enough to send comments on the upgrade (avail. only to beta testers at the date this was published). One anom. reader sent the following, which is the OS 8.5.1 Readme file apparently:

" What's new in the Mac OS 8.5.1 Update:
In response to initial customer and developer feedback, Apple has investigated reports concerning data loss and corruption and in response has made improvements to Drive Setup and provided updates to correct other customer issues. Mac OS 8.5.1 Update fixes a memory leak in AppleScript, a memory problem in the file system, and a Mac OS Extended format corruption issue, re-enables the use of many third party ADB devices, and provides some improved communication through Internet proxy firewalls for Sherlock. In addition, Apple has developed a number of additional Sherlock plug-ins that are included in this update. Watch for new plug-ins on the Sherlock Plug-in Directory at http://www.apple.com/sherlock/plugins.html.

  • Drive Setup 1.6.2
Previous versions of Drive Setup can overwrite small portions of the MacOS Standard format partition if the partitions on the target driver are not as expected. This is an extremely rare occurance, but could cause drive repair utilities to report that block 0 of that volume is bad or cause the drive to not show up on the desktop.

Volumes initialized or updated with previous versions of Drive Setup also may not always have the needed patches installed on the hard drive. These patches are now installed on all drives.

  • AppleScript memory leak
Under certain conditions AppleScript 1.3.2 had a memory leak that would commonly occur when using AppleScript.

  • Asynchronous File I/O
Making a large number of asynchronous writes to a MacOS Standard or Extended format volume would cause a memory error which could require a a restart. Customers funning FileMaker pro 3.0 and later, or FileMaker Server 2.0 and later, may experience this problem when importing large numbers of records from an existing database.

  • Third party ADB device failures
A change made in the Mac OS 8.5 disabled many third party dongles and joysticks.

  • Sherlock proxy limitations
Sherlock would fail to communicate through some Internet proxy firewalls and prevent customers from using Sherlock to search the Internet."

This article was posted prior to the release to the update. When released the 8.5.1 update will be available at Apple's web site.
