News stories of Sept. 25th, 2003: |
| 3 Bonus offers added for .Mac users |
| Brett O. sent a heads-up that there's 3 new bonus offers for .Mac users at www.mac.com.
- Free VersionTracker Plus Subscription (sign up by Nov. 25th, 2003), and 1/2 off a Pro ($49) subscription (until Oct. 24th, 2003).
- Free iBlog Software (until Nov. 25th, 2003): Keep a journal, publish your movie reviews, or be a political commentator with easy-to-use iBlog publishing software (a US$19.95 value), now free for .Mac members. iBlog lets you focus on what you want to say without worrying about formatting, archiving, or site maintenance. With iBlog you can publish your
weblog right to .Mac, and integration with iLife makes it easy to add photos and movies, too.
- Save US$30 on FireWire Drives
The new Backup 2 Public Beta makes it easy to backup your data to nearly any
location, including external hard drives. To make this even more convenient,
.Mac and the online Apple Store are offering discounts on three SmartDisk
Firewire drives, just for .Mac members. Save US$30 on the super-portable
FireLite 40GB drive and the 80GB and 120GB desktop drives. Supplies are
limited, so take advantage of the .Mac discount today. (Expires 9/27/2003)
Something I missed earlier this month was the free offer of Stickybrain2 for .Mac users (free until Oct. 1st, 2003).

| Anyone else with iBook 2002 Dual Monitor OF Tweak having Problems w/10.2.8? |
(Updated with reader replies - see below)
I don't own an iBook to test this but a reader that applied the OF mod to enable dual monitor support wrote regarding problems after updating to 10.2.8. Posting this to see if anyone else that applied that tweak has seen any problems with 10.2.8.
"I've been having problems with my iBook and wanted to know if anybody else was having the same problem. I got anxious and installed the 10.2.8 update on my iBook 800. It installed fine, and after the reboot, I ran the repair partitions utility and it finished fine as well.
A few hours later however, the video started to become corrupted and then I was left staring at a blank screen. Hard reset, I can hear the hard drive working, and things plugged into the USB ports seem to work, but I'm getting nothing on the screen. I let it cool down because it was hot, and hooked it up to an external monitor. Right after I got it in December I used the Open Firmware hack to enable monitor spanning. However, once I got it booting with an external monitor (which I'm not sure how I did, mostly reseting it and praying) I could not change it from mirroring.
I've ran a hardware test and it said everything was ok. I was just wondering if somehow Apple could have done something to disable the (dual monitor/extended desktop) mod.
Jeremy"

I used the combo updater to update, and everything (including the
dual-monitor hack) works fine...

I run an iBook 800 Combo with the dual monitor patch and MacOS X
10.2.8. It works all fine since 10 hours.

I don't know that it would have anything to do with 10.2.8, but I
applied the tweak to OF in my iBook 600 to enable dual monitors, and a
few months later, the video on the main screen died. I was on the road
at the time, so I didn't have a way to test it with an external monitor.
Thankfully, I was able to back it up to my iPod and leave the iBook at
an Apple Store in Chicago to get fixed.

similar problem as to 10.2.8 and dual monitor
using a Ti 400 and an external monitor with the menu bar set to appear
on the external monitor, when I clicked on Safari's tabbed bookmarks
they appeared on the Ti's monitor, not below the tab in Safari where
expected
hope this adds to the body of knowledge

(BTW - I've gotten hundreds of mails on 10.2.8 in the last 48 hours and have not been able to read them all, but thanks to all that sent their comments.)

| Comments on 3Dlabs high end 3D cards for Macs |
"
I just have received a email from 3DLabs stating that they are in discussions with Apple, for those who need 256MB and 512MB CADD DCC cards for Maya etc.
I expressed my interest in purchasing the Wildcat VP880 Pro. (512MB RAM) as soon as it's compatible with the new Dual G5's.
Lets hope the details get worked out and we can have Chester Cheetah dancing on our desktops!
-S.
copy of the email.
"
Good evening... and thank you for your interest in 3Dlabs products.
At this time we are having discussions with Apple to see how our two products will fit together. Do you have a preference for which 3Dlabs product family you would like to see support the Apple G5?
Sincerely,
Stephen D. Cox

I'm contacting 3Dlabs to try and get more info on this.

| Pioneer DVR-106 1.07 firmware update |
(Update - Don K. sent a link to the Pioneer usa page that has the 1.07 firmware update also (PC flasher), noting:
"Firmware version 1.07 for richer media support and improved playability")
Although there's no Mac flasher, a reader sent a note that there's a 1.07 firmware update (dated Sept. 18th, 2003) for the Pioneer DVR-106/A06 drive at this Pioneer Europe support page. (Scroll down the page to the "IDE/ATAPI DVD Writer" section.) I've not checked to see if it's appeared at the USA site. I'm not sure what this fixes/improves, but just a FYI for any owners of this drive that have a PC available to flash it.

| Silverado Systems Free PowerMac G5 offer w/purchase of high end Studio Bundles |
Torrey Loomis (President of Silverado Systems) sent a note about their "Free PowerMac G5 offer" for those that buy one of their Studio System bundles ($21,997 for the Xserve/RAID based Film/Animation/Video bundle and $22,897 for the Xserve/RAID based Print/Pre-Press/Graphic design studio bundle). No details that I could find on the G5 system, so I assume it's the low-end 1.6GHz base model. (I don't have any exprience with this company but they say they're an apple authorized dealer.)
Update: Torrey later wrote:
"Dear xlr8yourmac.com
The free G5 is indeed a 1.6 Ghz G5.
However, we have added a feature. Select professional installation with
your package and we will upgrade the G5 to a 1.8 Ghz machine with 512(MB)
RAM.
Thanks for the post!

The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 11,399 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

Combo DVD-CDR Drives:

(Illustrated guide to adding a 2nd HD here in B&W G3 rev2 and G4 towers up to the QuickSilver models.
IDE articles page RAID section has an illustrated guide for adding 2 more drives in the side bays.)
- IDE Seagate ST3120023A 120GB in Dual G4 DDR (OS X)
- IDE Western Digital WD1200 120GB in Dual G4 (OS X)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
