| ATI Comments on Update to fix Lightwave3D/OS X Issue |
ATI wrote in reply to the OS X 10.2.5 and later driver issue with Lightwave 3D discussed here recently:
"
The specific problem was identified by our engineers and it affects RADEON 8500, RADEON 9000 and MOBILITY RADEON 9000. It has been fixed for both Mac OS X 10.2.6 and 10.2.8 release streams and is undergoing additional testing. This fix will make its way onto the ATI.COM web site as a "hotfix" - it will be a single component installation affecting only the above-mentioned chips. Only people affected by this specific problem need to download the update. Another news posting will come when the file is ready for the web. "
In a confirmation of the models affected, a reader mail today noted the new Powerbook G4 15in with ATI 9600 Mobility didn't have the problem, although a 9000 Mobility model did.

| More G5 Owner Comments on ATTO SCSI cards and Adaptec 39160 Card Use |
| The Dual G5 owner that wrote earlier today regarding problems with ATTO UL4S/UL3S SCSI cards sent an update including notes on using an Adaptec 39160 card:
"Boy you are going to find some interesting stuff in this message.
First I talked with ATTO tech. He said the UL4S are not compatible and said they are working on a fix. As for the UL3S he could not give me an answer. But I was running the same card, cables and everything on a G4. (I had wondered if the large file copy problem he mentioned earlier could be termination related)
Now for the really shocker. I remembered I had a 39160 Adaptec card back on the shelf that never worked in the G4s. So just on a lark I put that card in the G5 slot 4 and guess what it seems to be working fine.
ATTO benchmarks 70MB per second. Real file copy from SCSI drive 1 to 2 of a 969MB file was around 53MB sec. Opening that same file in Photoshop was the same from the SATA drive as from the SCSI drives, about 30 seconds.
I am amazed that so far I have not seen any problems from the Adaptec card.
Doyle Y.
"
A 29160 card owner had reported last month it worked in a G5. I asked for the firmware versions of the cards tested and if he used the OF tweak for 29/39160 SCSI cards to enable booting from connected drives. (See OF mod info at PCI card section of our PowerMac G5 Tech Info/Compatibility page. A previous 29160 card report is also there from a G5 owner.)

| G5 Owner Report on ATTO UL3S and UL4S SCSI Cards |
| (from a reader email today - see the later news item above for his later comments and notes on using an Adaptec 39160 card.)
"
I have tried both ATTO UL4S and UL3S.
With the UL4S the dual G5 will not even boot. Don't get any video. I
tried two different UL4S cards with the same results in both slot 4 and 3.
With the UL3S card the computer will boot but when I try to copy any
reasonable size file the computer will freeze. (problems during I/O
can be termination related also, but that might not be the problem here.) Interesting ATTO's
benchmarking utility shows the drives achieving 70MB per second.
Looks like none of ATTO's cards will work in a dual G5. I got two 73GB
Seagate Ultra 360 I was planning to use on the G5 and as of now it looks
like that will not be possible. Is anybody having any success with any
SCSI cards and the dual G5 at least for high throughput drives.
So what is the solution for a high speed high capacity multi drive setup?
Doyle Y
(I asked if he had installed the latest ATTO 2.0 drivers (which noted G5 support) - he said yes. I also asked if the cards were retail or OEM models (retail he said) and if retail models, if they had the latest ATTO firmware and he said yes.)
"
Previous ATTO SCSI card reports and previous notes/tips on Adaptec 29/39160 SCSI cards (OF tweak to required for booting in Quicksilver and later Macs) are included in the PCI card section of the PowerMac G5 Tech Info/Compatibility page.

| Revolution 7.1 Audio Card Driver Update for 10.2.8 (and G5/10.2.7, Panther) |
| A reader sent a note that M-Audio has posted a driver update 1.2.7 to fix the problems with 10.2.8 (kernel extension not loading) with the Revolution 7.1 Audio PCI Card.
"
Howdy, I haven't seen this pop up on VersionTracker yet. M-Audio has posted
a new driver for the Revolution 7.1 PCI audio card, driver version 1.2.7)
which works under Mac OS 10.2.8, (even though Apple has pulled their update!?)
I installed the driver, which required a restart, and didn't have to change any options/preferences the card auto detects now and I have my REAL sound back!
Revolution card owners can grab the new driver at:
http://www.m-audio.com/support/driversearch.php
and select the Revolution card and the Mac OS Jaguar OS selection and get
the new driver, notes say it's ready for 10.3/Panther too! Kudos to M-Audio
for crankin' out a fix so fast!
Best, Kent S."
Here's M-Audio's driver page release notes:
Revolution Drivers 1.2.7
- [Driver] Support for PowerMac G5 with system version 10.2.7.
- [Driver] Support for System Version 10.3 (Panther).
- Driver/Panel] Support for 4.0 and 5.0 audio modes.

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
