| 10.2.8 Update Pulled from Software Updates and Kbase Docs |
| Update: Although the download 10.2.8 updater was available at the kbase doc when I first posted this at appx 5PM Eastern time - after a reader email that the Combo 10.2.8 update had been pulled as of appx 6PM ET, I checked again and the 10.2.8 updater is no longer available. (previous news post follows)
I've been offline for hours (car repairs) but included in another flood of 10.2.8 related emails (not all problems, but many are) was a note about 10.2.8 being pulled.
"
if you look at the Discussion Boards, you will see there are TONS of problems with 10.2.8.
Apple has pulled the 10.2.8 update from Software Updates. I verified
this by going to a Mac OS X that is still running 10.2.6 and it was
there this morning and now the update is not offered.
Michael G.
"
As a test I fired up a 10.2.6 G4 tower and ran Software Updates - 10.2.8 didn't appear in the listing. Checking the
Kbase doc w/10.2.8 installer shows was there as of about 5PM Eastern Time. (Download link no longer works as of 6PM ET. Combo Updater also pulled.)

| 10.2.8 reports page updated |
It's impossible to add every email on 10.2.8 as they're constantly coming in but I've updated the 10.2.8 reports page with many reader reports on problems, tips, etc. It's organized by category (USB/PCI/PCcards, Firewire, Ethernet/networking, Software, etc.). One of the more common problems (other than the Ethernet issue) is that 3 PB G3 lombard owners have reported video display corruption after the update. Also some Firewire related problems (that I can't repeat here but testing only with a PB G4/800 with portable FW drive which seems ok, as is networking.)

| OS X 10.2.8 Combo Updater |
| (Update: As of 6PM Eastern Time - the Combo update has been pulled, as has the standard updater - see later news items. ) The 10.2.8 combo update was available at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120244
. (Kbase doc originally said it will update any 10.2 version to 10.2.8, but a reader that used it said it was for 10.2.5 or later. Not for G5 systems.) In the past the Combo update sometimes fixed odd problems seen by some with the standard updater. If anyone finds the Combo Update fixes any problems they had with the standard updater, let me know.

| ATI Driver Problem with Lightwave 3D? |
| I haven't had time to repeat the tests he noted below (last night I did try rotating characters with LW 7.5c/10.2.6 without problems though with an ATI 9000 card installed) but wondering if any other ATI card owners with Lightwave 3D can test to see if they have a problem.
"
Hello Mike,
Im from Australia and have been a longtime reader here.
We Lightwavers are looking for a voice to help us.
We noticed you guys use Lightwave in your Benchmarks and have a huge
voice in the mac community.
Lightwave since 10.2.5 has received a nasty Open GL bug that simply
makes using lightwave (and maya now)
UNUSABLE. It freezes the system ala os9 style needing a force restart.
This happens when u rotate in the perspective view.
(see below - I could not repeat the problem here with that simple a test-Mike) Apple says its ATI's fault, so does Newtek. (I wrote a contact at NewTek to get his comments on this)
Nvidia cards do not get this problem!
This has gone ignored and denied from ATI for 8 months now!
Many posts have been started about this problem, on apples support
forums and Newteks.
The 10.2.8 update did nothing to fix this at all .
We cannot use FCP4 as it needs 10.2.5 or higher.
(I don't understand that comment but asked what
OS X version is used and what Lightwave 3D version
is used. Also asked if they had run repair permissions after
any ATI driver updates - as mentioned before here (most recently on the 1.1 ATI driver installer for the 9800) it often shows a ton of corrections - literally every ATI driver file. May not matter but just a FYI.-Mike)
Ran repair permissions and etc from disk utility, about to run a fsck
in sudo now.
What i was saying before is all us lightwavers are stuck in 10.2.4
because it doesnt crash BUT we cannot install FCP4 as it requires
10.2.5 or higher.
I just installed 10.2.8 and the problem with lightwave still is there.
(using LW 7.5c he later said-Mike)
Some threads started:
(Apple forum thread)
(Newtech forum)
(he later wrote)
Mike
THIS sequence WILL 100% crash lightwave (make sure you're not running anything unsaved)
- Open Modeler.
- Make sure viewports are set to the standard "Quad" setup.
- Set the shader for the "Top" viewport to "Wireframe Shade". And set
the shader for the "Perspective" viewport to "Wireframe Shade".
- Make a Box, 1m x 1m x 1m, and centered on the Origin. (You can use
the Numeric panel if you wish...)
- Drop the box tool (and don't select anything.)
- Now hit B (for bevel)
- In the "Top" viewport, use your mouse and (Bevel) Shift 2m (offset
0m)
- Now, right-drag and (Bevel) Shift 500mm (offset 0m)
- Now, right-drag and (Bevel) Shift 250mm (offset 0m)
- ...Shift 100mm (offset 0m)
(just keep bevelling and it will crash)
Adrian
"
I'm too swamped to try this now but if any other ATI card/Lightwave 3D owners try the above let me know if you see a hard feeze or problem. Please include system/os/card/LW version details in reports - Thanks.
(Note - several readers replied they have seen this problem since 10.2.5 with an ATI card in Lightwave 3D 7.5. I'll post their comments in Wednesday's news.)

| 10.2.8 Apple Security Notes (SSH, Sendmail and other Fixes) |
(from a reader mail - it appears 10.2.8's security updates include fixes for recently reported SSH, Sendmail and other security issues)
"
Hi there! I just thought I'd quote this to you from Apple's online
documentation for those wondering about official documentation regarding SSH being fixed with this update.
-Ralph M.
From
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61798
"Security updates
Security updates are listed below according to the software release in which they first appeared. Where possible, CVE IDs (http://cve.mitre.org/cve/") are used to reference the vulnerabilities for further information.
Mac OS X 10.2.8
a.. OpenSSH: Addresses CAN-2003-0693, CAN-2003-0695, and CAN-2003-0682 to fix buffer management errors in OpenSSH's sshd versions prior to 3.7.1
b.. sendmail: Addresses CAN-2003-0694 and CAN-2003-0681 to fix a buffer overflow in address parsing, as well as a potential buffer overflow in
ruleset parsing.
c.. fb_realpath(): Fixes CAN-2003-0466 which is an off-by-one error in the fb_realpath() function that may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code.
d.. arplookup(): Fixes CAN-2003-0804. The arplookup() function caches ARP requests for routes on a local link. On a local subnet only, it is possible for an attacker to send a sufficient number of spoofed ARP requests which will exhaust kernel memory, leading to a denial of service.

| Reader Tip for those with Ethernet Problems in 10.2.8 |
| I can't say I like the idea of this (installing a 10.2.6 file in 10.2.8) but for those with no other choice or don't want to wait to see if Apple releases a fix - here's a reader tip that has worked for others:
"
Here's the actual URL of the post below:

Here's the post with file link:
RE: OS 10.2.8 Upgrade Killed Network Connection
(msg # 10.: Posted Sep 22, 03 8:51 pm)
I had the same problem, (no Ethernet after 10.2.8) but I'm now happily back online. Here's the fix:
The AppleGMACEthernet.kext driver in /System/Library/Extensions has
been updated from 1.2.4 to 1.3.0. The 1.3.0 version apparently breaks
the onboard ethernet somehow. I found someone who had not yet
installed the update, and copied their kext to a CD. To install it,
back up your existing kext to your home directory, and then go to the
terminal:
cd /System/Library/Extensions
sudo rm -Rf AppleGMACEthernet.tar.gz
sudo cp -r /path/to/AppleGMACEthernet.tar.gz .
cd ..
sudo rm Extensions.kextcache
sudo rm Extensions.mkext
Now reboot. The last two lines clear out the cache of Extensions. I
don't know if they're strictly necessary. I posted the old kext at
http://web.mit.edu/apm/www/AppleGMACEthernet.tar.gz
I take absolutely no responsibility for this fix. Your mileage may
vary. Please don't blame me if you hose your system doing this. Hope
this helps.
Andrew"
I've added this note to the OS X 10.2.8 Reports page. (Update - on 9/24/2003 Apple pulled the 10.2.8 update and posted a kbase doc titled Mac OS X 10.2.8: Can't Connect via Ethernet After Installing Update that includes notes on affected mac models and tips for those that had Ethernet port/networking problems.) |

| Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated |
| The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 3 new reports this morning (reader entries from yesterday; entries after midnight yesterday are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 8,749. Here's a summary of the update added today (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):
- Newer Tech G3/400 in 7600/132 (rated 5)
(noted problems after 9.1 update - perhaps extensions related)
- Powerlogix G4 Dual 1GHz in G4 Cube (rated 10)
(I think this is a mod using a Tower Power Supply instead of the
VRM board which won't live long with a dual 1GHz in a Cube)
(My full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades w/apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked here.)
- Apple Beige G3/233 OC report
(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). For detailed reviews with performance tests and install tips, see the CPU Upgrades page.)

DVD-R Drives:
- IDE Pioneer DVR-105 in G4/AGP (OS X)
(problems noted with iLife/iDVD installs - suggested checking
previous article here on iDVD3 w/retail superdrives on the misc/OS
topics page)
- IDE Toshiba SD-R5112 in B&W G3 (OS 9.2)
(no itunes burn support, noted some problems burning DVDs)
(Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT, and B&W G3 Macs)
Hard Drives:
- IDE Western Digital Expert 418000 18GB in Beige G3 (OS 9.1)
(noted the old problem with these drives of warm restart hangs)
(Beige G3 MT illustrated HD upgrade guide here)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
