| Reader Notes Sonnet G4 1GHz AGP CPU Upgrade Shipped |
| This is the first note I've seen about Sonnet shipping their 1GHz G4 CPU upgrades for AGP (and Cube) Macs:
"
I placed an order for the 1GHz Sonnet ENCORE / ST Processor upgrade for
my G4 450Mhz AGP a couple of months ago. I am told that it shipped and
it will be delivered to me in a couple of days. I will mail in
benchmarks as soon as I get a chance to install it.
Thanks.

| Sonnet G4/800 CPU Card Overclocking Info |
| (from a reader email)
"Hello Mike:
While surfing tonight, I ran across the following Japanese site that has
some information about the new Sonnet Crescendo/PCI G4 800 card. I
don't read Japanese, but it certainly looks like this guy overclocked his
card to 960MHz! Perhaps someone can translate this information?
http://www.sevencolors.net/mocw/cpu/cpu02.htm
Gordon H."
As noted in the past here, Google.com and Altavista's (Babelfish) have web page language translators - google doesn't currently list Japanese however as an option. The translations are not always good, but here's tthe english translated page using Babelfish.
The page notes adding a 2nd Fan and boosting the bus speed to 60MHz - since the bus/cpu multiplier is already at the max 16x, boosting bus speed is the only option for higher CPU speed. (Many macs won't be able to run a 60MHz bus speed reliably.)

| More Sonnet ATA/100 OS X 10.2 Driver Tip Comments |
| The latest reader comments on the Sonnet ATA/100 OS X 10.2 driver tip in Monday's news. (Yesterday's news had a Trio card owner reporting it helped also, but I don't have any of these Sonnet cards personally.)
"Hello. Today I read about the fix for the Sonnet ATA 100 card. I have
one and have had it disabled since I first learned of this problem on
your website. I followed the instructions for the fix. Upon verbose
logging, I noticed that the Ultratek100.kext package was "not authentic
and would be ignored" by the system. However, the system booted
beautifully. So now the test....restart. I restarted with verbose
logging. The very first line reported said "loading Ultratek100 from
archive. The system booted beautifully. I then restarted without
verbose logging. The system again started beautifully. I then decided
to remove the Ultratek100.kext altogether. This seems risky, but
remember if the system won't boot I would just shutdown and use the
internal ATA33 bus (of my PCI G4)
Using the terminal command sudo rm -r "drag the file here for path" .
I rebooted, verbosely, and yes, the line
loading com.firmtek.driver.Ultratek100 from archive
appeared. The system booted beautifully. System Profiler reports the
presence of an Ultratek100 card on the PCI and alas! I enjoy the speed
of my Segate Baracuda IV once again.
Dignosis: The Ultratek100.kext in 10.2 is to blame. AND, there is a
driver included in the Mach kernel, no kext is needed. I reccommend
simply deleting the Ultratek100.kext using the terminal and then
happily using your Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 card.
Jed DiPaola."

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
