New iMacs (up to 27in/LED backlit, Quad-Core i7 CPU), MacBooks, new (wireless) Magic Mouse
The online Apple store is down again for updates this morning and unlike last week, it is for new Macs.
"new iMacs with "ultimate displays"
Apple today unveiled an all new iMac line featuring brilliant LED-backlit 21.5 and 27-inch widescreen displays in a new edge-to-edge glass design and seamless all aluminum enclosure. The new iMac line, starting at $1,199, is the fastest ever with Intel Core 2 Duo processors starting at 3.06 GHz, and Core i5 and i7 quad-core processors for up to twice the performance. Every new iMac ships with a wireless keyboard and the all new wireless Magic Mouse, the world's first mouse with Multi-Touch technology."

There's a new GPU option (HD 4670/256MB vram) but the 4850/512MB remains at top end. One FW800 port (no FW400), 4 USB 2.0 ports and an SD card slot. (No eSATA as I'd hoped...) See tech specs page for complete details. There's 4 dimm slots in the new iMacs and per the user guide it does support 4GB dimms for up to 16GB of ram. The other question is if there's triple-channel memory support with the Core i7 CPU for instance. (BTW - the 27-inch models also "support input from external DisplayPort sources (adapters sold separately)" so I'd assume that means it could be used as a 2nd display for a MacBook/Pro or Mac Pro with miniDisplayPort output.)

Also new $999 MacBooks today:

"Apple today updated its popular MacBook with a new, durable polycarbonate unibody design featuring a brilliant LED-backlit display, a glass Multi-Touch trackpad and Apple's innovative built-in battery for up to seven hours of battery life. Inheriting technology and design features from the MacBook Pro line, the new MacBook is an ideal consumer notebook for students and new Mac users, and is available for $999."

BTW - the new MacBook loses Firewire (again).

Here's their PR on the new wireless Magic Mouse:

"Today Apple introduced the new wireless Magic Mouse, the first mouse to use Apple's revolutionary Multi-Touch technology. Pioneered on iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpads, Multi-Touch allows customers to navigate using intuitive finger gestures. Instead of mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the Magic Mouse is a seamless Multi-Touch surface. Magic Mouse comes standard with the new iMac and will be available as a Mac accessory at just $69."

The product page has a QT movie demo of the Magic Mouse.

FYI to owners of failing 1st gen Time Capsules (that also have AppleCare on a Mac)
A lot of 1st gen Time Capsule owners have reported failures, thought to be internal Pwr Supply related (ref: Sept. 4th news post w/link to apple forum threads). Yesterday a reader sent a note that if you have AppleCare for your Mac, it also covers the Time Capsule:

"Mike, Loss of internet at my office on Sunday morning resulted in a hunt to find the cause. Extremely disappointed to find that my 18 month old Time Capsule had sadly died. No green light and no luck with trying another power cable etc. A Google search brought up numerous pages with similar complaints. One website sums it all up very well (http://timecapsuledead.org/). One of the many posts reminded me of a statement in the AppleCare Protection Plan. It reads as follows...

"(i) Under APP, Apple covers the Covered Equipment and one Apple branded display if purchased at the same time and registered with a covered Mac mini, Mac Pro or MacBook Pro computer. An Apple-branded mouse and keyboard are also covered under APP if included with the Covered Equipment (or purchased with a Mac mini). An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment. If during the Repair Coverage Period there is a defect in the materials or workmanship of the Covered Equipment or the other covered items described above, Apple will at its option to the extent permitted by the applicable mandatory laws, repair or replace the affected item.

Being Sunday, i was unable to contact Apple so i thought i would see if anyone had tried to obtain a replacement. The news didn't look very good as tons of people were arguing this very point. Some people said that it IS covered, several said it must be on same receipt as the APP'd equipment and many said that it is not covered at all.

I contacted Apple Support this morning at 8am and a replacement is being sent out to me. No questions asked. As soon as i gave my details, the replacement was ordered. Once it was all confirmed i asked for explicit information on the above statement in the APP. It was made abundantly clear that the statement stands exactly as is.

Main point of me contacting you is to highlight that ANYONE who has an APP for their Mac can use it for the items noted in the statement. It appears that there is lots of conflicting information around the net on this one. I thought it would be useful to let your readers know that they are covered!
Best Regards,
Kevan G.

I'd forgotten about AppleCare covering airport devices also (only had AppleCare once) but think this came up years ago. (Mike K. wrote he had has AE base replaced under AppleCare back in 2000, saying he was only asked if he used the AE with his covered Sawtooth tower.)

EyeTV App for iPhone updated (v1.0.1)
I saw this last night and wondered if the update also removed the ability to stream TV via 3G (after it was pulled due to that). I don't own it but EyeTV app v1.0.1 has these change notes:

We recommend updating to iPhone OS 3.1.2
  • Fixed a problem where audio would continue to play after leaving LiveT TV mode
  • Fixed a crash after zooming and changing channels (requires iPhone OS 3.1.2)
  • Accept iPod Best variants when streaming to the iPhone
  • Fixed a crash in the EPG when scrolling past midnight
  • Compatible with DVB and ATSC programming guide
  • General performance and stability improvements

I'm going to write a reader that originally reported A/V sync issues with v1.0 to see if this update helps with that. (Network connections/throughput can also be a factor although IIRC some complained about streaming problems originally even inside their own house literally standing beside their wireless base and when using a C2D or better Mac as the server.)
