| DiskWarrior 4.1.1 updater |
| Matthew sent a heads-up on Diskwarrior 4.1.1 update, available at Alsoft's support/updates page:
"DiskWarrior 4 version 4.1.1 is now available for complete compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5.5 (Leopard). Version 4.1.1 restores the ability to use DiskWarrior to repair permissions while started from Mac OS X 10.5.5."
That page has a link to download the free CD updater for DW 4.0/4.1 (form w/SN required) and also a post dated today on DiskWarrior 4 now shipping on DVD instead of CD.

| Looking for feedback on 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda SATA Hard Drive |
(Updated with Mac Pro and G5 tower onboard SATA reports.)
I've seen several reports on the web of the 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 having issues playing back video/audio files (periodically stuttering on video/audio playback instance). (Note: See below for later reply regarding formatting/journaling related console error - reformatting as not journaled was his workaround.) One Firewire cased 1.5TB drive owner reported he hadn't seen this problem, but no details on the case/bridge board used. And apparently other external case users were not so lucky. (As a general FYI - check any ext. case AC adapter rating - some are only 2A and seagate drives typically spec 2.8A max draw.) Current 1.5TB Drive firmware is SD17, no updates yet. (Update: See Nov 21st news page notes on SD1A firmware update.)
If you are using a 1.5TB Seagate let me know if you've seen any problems and if it's used w/onboard SATA or an external case. (Also include drive firmware version, listed in Apple system profiler and details on your Mac model, etc..) Thanks.
Updates: A G5 tower owner replied he's not seen any issues so far:
"I have a dual 2.0ghz G5 PowerMac tower running OS 10.4.11 and I just installed the 1.5TB (ST31500341AS with firmware SD17) over internal SATA. No problems with video stutter on this end (WMV/AVI/DIVX/XVID/MPG4 - standard or HD). Can also stream to the PS3 (standard def) without stutter with Medialink.
I have had reliability issues with the Seagate 750gb drives recently though (<1 yr old), but I run them nearly 24 hrs per day x 7 days so maybe it's my fault. Then again, I've never had problems with WD or Maxtor; in fact, I still have my original drive that's over 4 years old and runs great.
Anyway, the new 1.5TB drive seems to run well with 3 partitions currently. I'll let you know if it fails.
(I asked David if he had formatted the drive as journaled.)
Yes, journaled HFS+.
(FYI - he later said he had partitioned the drive into 3 volumes, none larger than 1TB. This is also a said to be a workaround for the problems.)
-David N."
Another G5 owner that initially reported seeing no problems with this drive (journaled) wrote on Wednesday that he's now seeing the problem. I asked he try turning off journaling and report back. A Mac Pro owner wrote with notes on internal SATA/journaling issues:
"I have had many issues with my 1.5TB Seagate. I sent for a replacement and it had the SAME issues. I turned off journaling (not a long term solution) and the stuttering went away. I also have had a long discussion with Seagate tech, and no solution.
There is a post on macrumors identical to my situation. (here's a clip)
I use it as my media disk for iTunes, its not the boot drive. About every 10 minutes, itunes (any anything accessing the new disk) just freezes. Anything trying to (or currently) access the disk freezes for about 15-20 seconds. Its really strange.
I grabbed the terminal response, here it is.
"...COMPUTER_NAME kernel[0]: jnl: disk3s2: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5"
The drive passed verification by Disk Utility.
I am on a 2008 Mac Pro, the drive is on internal SATA, drive Firmware SD17.
-GUANAdesign"
FYI - See Tuesday's news page Tip for Seagate 1.5TB owners with stuttering/performance problems for info on how to turn off journaling from Disk Utility. |
