Petitions to have Firewire Port in next MacBook (and Matte Screen option)
From a reader mail today:

"I don't know if you want to get involved with this, but there is a petition up for adding FW back to MacBooks. Don't think it will do any good, but I would love to have one (MacBook w/FW port).

Petitions don't usually work but it can't hurt to let your opinion be heard this way (maybe it will have an impact on their next model change). Apple also has a Product Feedback page you can use to send your comments/wish lists, etc. (Here's the specific MacBook feedback page.)
BTW - This weekend Milton wrote there's another petition mentioning both the FW port and an option for a Matte screen at http://www.petitiononline.com/m4tt3/petition.html.

New MacBook Pro owner notes/tips on BootCamp/XP Install
Paul sent a follow-up to his report in yesterday's news on the new MacBook Pro and MacBook (he bought one of each):

"Some BootCamp feedback on the new MacBook Pro:
I used BootCamp to install WinXP SP2.
BootCamp automatically formats the drive as FAT32, and I got through the first part of the install process (the non graphical blue screen part), when, on reboot, it would come up and say "Disk error."

The only fix was to unpartition and repartition using the BootCamp assistant, and then on setup format the BootCamp partition as NTFS...

Once loaded, all went well. All the latest drivers seem to be on the Leopard install disc, including the Nvidia chipset stuff. (But still check for windows updates after any install - frequent updates (including critical security ones as well as driver updates) - and MS recently released another slew of security updates.)

The graphic card that is detected is the one you had selected under Energy settings on the Mac. Example: if you choose "better performance" and go into XP, it's like the 9400M doesn't exist. And vice versa for "better battery life". (Ref: Apple doc MacBook Pro (Late 2008): How to set graphics performance-Mike)

The biggest issue I have is that right clicking just does not work. Even though there is a "secondary click" setting under the BC control panel in XP, it does nothing. Ctrl-click does not work either. (FYI A couple readers replied that using 3 fingers worked.-Mike)
-Paul"

If you've bought a new MacBook or MacBook Pro, let me know your experience with it.

Notes on new MacBook repair components
(From a UK reader mail last night)

" I just had a look over the take-apart's you mentioned on your site (in yesterday's news). It prompted me to see if the Service Manuals were available for them yet. They are, and it is not all good news.
The parts list for each is very small compared to the previous generation. This is a good thing. However, from my point of view, the bad news is that the keyboard is part of the topcase (just like the original MacBook). This applies to both MacBook 2008 and MacBook Pro 2008. Even worse, however, is the fact that Apple have gone back to the TiBook style display enclosure. The whole assembly must be replaced if the LCD goes bad or is smashed. The manual makes it clear that no attempt should be made to remove the glass frontage of the LCD. (Glass is bonded to the panel reportedly)
I expect that either Display Assembly will be very expensive. However, it seems that removal of the assembly is quite easy. As for the keyboard, no matter how cheap they are, there will be big labour charges involved as everything has to be removed to swap it. I think there is a clear message here. Buy AppleCare...
    Best, Regards, Kevan

If the display glass was broken, typical computer warranties wouldn't cover that as it would be classified as an accident, abuse, etc. (not a typical component failure). Although I've seen some warranties offer optional coverage for accidents, theft, etc.. (And there used to be some extended warranty features with some credit card purchases, although not sure that's true anymore.)

Mac Call of Duty 4 Patch (v1.7)
Eddie sent a note that Aspyr has released a v1.7 patch for Mac Call of Duty 4. (There's a Mac COD 4 (Retail box) v1.7 patch and a Mac COD 4 (Digital Download) v1.7 patch.) Here's the change info:

"This is an official update for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This patch will update any retail version of the game to version 1.7. This patch brings the Mac version of the game up to the current PC version so Mac users will be able to play cross platform multi-player games.

    1.7 Change list
    - New maps Creek, Chinatown, Broadcast, and Killhouse
    - Hardcore and oldschool server browser filters
    - Fix for a Denial of Service attack.
    - Fixed an exploit that allowed players to access certain console dvars during multi-player matches.
    - Fixed a crash that could occur when a Chinatown Sabotage match would go into over-time.
    - Fixed a bug where the MP icons (Bomb, Defend, Capture, etc) were always showing up as English regardless of the install language."

If you missed it Apple has a feature page on Mac COD 4: Modern Warfare.
