| Doom 3 Expansion pack announced |
| Although the mac version of Doom 3 still isn't available, there's a press release from id at yahoo on a Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil(TM) expansion pack which will "...follow the events of DOOM 3 and feature new locations, characters and weapons, including the return of the double-barreled shotgun..."
BTW - the earlier report on the 100GB Seagate notebook drive from Don has been updated to note despite the Seagate web page, the drive's box lists it as 7200rpm and another owner of this drive also sent a PDF file that listed it as 7200rpm.

| PB G4 (AL) owner report on Seagate 100GB/7200rpm (per box) notebook drive install |
| (from a reader mail yesterday)
** Update ** - the drives inside the 7200rpm marked boxes are actually "Momentus 54.2" models (verified personally on 2 samples at a bestbuy store - and per a phone call with Seagate tech support they say these boxes are being recalled because of the misprint and said the 100GB 7200rpm 2.5in drive model is not even in retail production yet.
(original news item follows)
"
Hi Mike, Swapped out my slow Fujitsu 2.5 inch hard drive for a Seagate 100GB 7200rpm/8MB cache hard drive. model ST9100823A
(update - according to this Seagate page, that drive model is 5400rpm, not 7200 rpm - However the packaging/box for the drive notes 7200rpm, and another reader (thanks Frank) sent a PDF file also for the "Momentus 7200.1" notebook drive model, which listed a 100GB version. I asked if the drive label had 7200rpm on it but Don said he didn't notice - Frank said it was on the drive label, but that can't be correct per my phonecon with Seagate on tuesday and checking 2 samples at a local bestbuy store - both actual drives had "Momentus 54.2" as the model on the drive label.-Mike)
I used the take-apart info that John Wolf provided in his article "PB
G4 15 inch Aluminum take-apart". (one of several Powerbook guides on the systems page and IDE topics page here)
Once the top "keyboard" which is the entire top is separated follow
these steps to remove the hard drive.
- look to the right of the drive next to the DVD mechanism
- remove that slim frame by removing two small screws, lift it off
the tiny locator pin
- the thin frame is like the fenders of a car covering rubber
vibration protectors and screws
- gently lift up and out the hard drive, be careful of the ATA connector
- disconnect the ATA connector, I used small screw driver to gently pry it away
- install new hard drive and be sure the id is correct(I just set
mine to Master which was the Seagate factory default
Things to watch for: the DVD section in John's article, one could
mess up there so pry gently. I worked it from right to left. Look at
the DVD slot cover , it has "cuts in it that's where to use the screw
driver" he mentioned.
The job would be infinitely easier with the correct tool for the hex
head on top and all the little screws he mentioned.
,p.
I would likened the difficulty to PPC 8100 ram install. Ha!
Tx for your site, it helped once again
Don
Detroit, Mi
ps only problem I had was using the Panther install disk to partition
the drive then I had to re-boot once again to get the install to
take. This is normal but not too well known.
"
I've seen a few comments on that in drive db reports here. Since I have a portable FW case, I usually clone the internal drive to the new drive (temporarily put in the FW case) using Carbon Copy Cloner, then swap the drives (new drive internally) and re-use the old drive in a FW case.
I asked Don if he had run any performance tests with the new drive (being higher density plus higher rpm than the OEM drive it should be a noticeable boost in performance.)

| FYI on Mac Nvidia 6800 card - Kernel Panics booting from pre-10.3.5 disks |
I've added a note to the Mac Nvidia 6800 Ultra DDL Graphics card review that booting from a disk (HD or Optical) with an OS older than 10.3.5 results in a kernel panic. 10.3.5 was listed as a requirement for the 6800 and that's not just for driver/acceleration support apparently . I'm going to call Apple to see if they will send a 10.3.5 system restore DVD, since the one I have is useless now unless I clone/update it and ditto for my 2nd drive which has 10.2.8 (I kept that system around just for testing) and my techtool Pro 4 'eDrive' and utility CDs. I'll have to clone/update those also when I can get some time.
This isn't just an issue for older G5 owners as a reader that ordered a new G5 w/6800 card option that shipped with the 9600XT (w/6800 sent later due to delays on it) wrote he saw KP's when booting from his new G5s 10.3.4 system CDs. I suspect apple will send him a new system/restore DVD but I'm not so sure they will for older G5 owners like me that ordered the 6800 as a kit. (I spent about an hour on the phone with them today - they gave me a case number and promised to get back to me.)

| Another report on internal iBook G4 USB Bluetooth adapter install |
Friday's news page had a link to a reader's article on installing a USB bluetooth adapter in an iBook G4 (as well as later comments/tips and links to a take-apart page w/photos). I've gotten another complete article (in word doc format, needs conversion for posting) and one reader managed to find someone to sell him an iBook G4 14in model internal module (which differs from the 12in model in the antenna length he said) but here's an email from another iBook G4 owner that installed a D-Link USB BT adapter inside his iBook:
"
Hi Mike, I visit your site often and find it very helpful, thanks for all your efforts. After reading Klaus article, I decided to install my dlink usb bluetooth module into my G4 ibook, I now have built-in bluetooth everything works well.
After removing the usb case and connector I was left with a small logic board. I soldered five wires to the logic board four for the usb connections to the motherboard and one to extend the etched ariel to bypass the motherboard shielding giving better range as I found that the the shielding had diminished the range. I then insulated the dongle by sandwiching it with electrical tape laid it on the the motherboard then reassembled the ibook.
The hardest bit was soldering the wires to the logic board. Thank again for all your efforts for a great website.
Michael H.

| Petition for Garmin GPS support for the Mac |
| (from a reader mail this weekend)
"
There have been rumors lately that Garmin is considering developing Mac compatible software for their popular line of GPS devices. At the heart of this rumor is information provided by Garmin customer support saying that they recently received several Macintosh computers in order to develope support for their Palm based solutions.
GPSCity has had a poll for the last 8 months that has gathered 8,979 names. 8,500 of those in the last two months. I know that with the help of the Mac rumor and news community we can push those numbers much much higher so please help out with this cause even if you aren't currently a Garmin supporter or even a GPS owner.
All you have to do is click the link and fill out 3 boxes and that's it.
Thank you, Louis S

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
