Option Key Tip to force Bluetooth D-Link Adapter Firmware Update
For those that had D-Link adapters that would not update to the 1.0.2 Bluetooth firmware update (saying it already had the updated firmware) a reader sent tip from the Apple forums:

" Hi, I sent a comment before about not being able to update the firmware with a D-Link DBT-120 rev. 3. Well someone solved it by holding down option key when opening up the firmware updater and it worked!
Also you should leave your keyboard or mouse on, since when you hold down the option key it will ask for your password, and then it will turn off your devices and then run the firmware updater.

I am still wondering if in fact that this new firmware is the same as the one on the wireless keyboard or mouse disk. I know the versions say otherwise, but Apple could have just relabeled it for the masses.
Anyway, here is the thread --

Web Download Purchased Toast 6 is v6.0.1 (Bought 6.0 previously online? read this)
Recently there's been reports here that the shipping Toast6 is v6.0.1 that fixes the lack of Buffer Under Prevention when burning DVDs with multi-format drives like the Pioneer DVR-106 (and Plextor PX-708A and NEC multi-format drives). A reader that bought Toast6 (download version) wrote to say she downloaded it again and it was v6.0.1:

" Mike, Following the posts on your website, I thought I would see what would happen if I re-downloaded Toast 6 from the Roxio Website. I purchased Toast 6 as an electronic download. Fortunately, the download was still available to me. It is Toast 6.0.1 and yes indeed it does support buffer under run protection. (Pioneer DVR-106D tested). When I inserted a disk the BUP check box no longer grays out.

As of this moment there is no update on their website, however, my purchase was August 28th. So it it seems that anyone purchasing an electronic download should be able to download 6.0.1
Regards,
Diane P.
(I asked to verify she had seen BUP enabled when burning a DVD disc)
That is correct. I inserted a Piodata 4X DVD-R disk. And since you asked I inserted a Memorex 4X DVD+R and it exhibited the old behavior - grayed out the BUP check box. So then I opened a 25 spindle of Memorex 4X DVD-R. I performed as the Piodata. (BUP enabled) So I guess we have only a partial fix. BUP Support for DVD-R but not DVD+R. "

When I first reported the problem to a Toast contact, I was told that there was no BUP support for DVD+R, but was for DVD-R. However we all saw that with 6.0.0 even burning to DVD-Rs showed the option grayed out when used with drives like the DVR-106 and some others that supported both DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW. (I see the same issue with Toast 5.2.1 and those drives.) I hope they release a 6.0.1 updater soon and I wonder if Toast 5.2.1 will ever be updated...
(Note: Toast 6.0.1 also enables BUP support for DVD-Rs using the Plextor PX-708A which was not possible (grayed out) when burning DVD-Rs in v6.0.0 and v5.2.1)

Would you still buy Civ III Play the World if it was only Mac-Mac networkable?
(from a reader mail, posting on request)

" I'm writing in the hopes that you will publish some of what I have to say in your daily news section.
I recently contacted MacSoft Regarding the possibilitiy/status of a Mac port of Civilization 3: Play the World expansion. They responded with:

    Hi Scott,
Thanks for your note. It is unlikely that Play the World will be ported for the Macintosh because the PC version uses a network, multiplayer programming interface that makes cross-platform multiplayer gaming virtually impossible to develop. If we did bring Play the World to the Mac, players would only be able to play the Mac-world.
    Sincerely,
    Greg Grimes
    MacSoft Technical Support

I would like to encourage the Mac community to send MacSoft RESPECTFUL emails, asking them to consider porting Play the World to the Mac, despite the fact that it would not be PC compatible. I don't know about everyone else, but I would love to play this exansion with my other mac friends and couldn't care less if it was compatible with the PC version. I know that some people will care, but it seems like having it at all would be better than not at all. I realize that petitions and the like have a poor track record for changing companies' minds, but it couldn't hurt.
Thank you for your attention,
Scott "

I don't know if it would help convince them (or how much response it would take) but it can't hurt to let them know you'd be interested in the game. However many companies may not welcome a flood of emails to their support or sales addresses at least (depending on the response - not sure how many readers would be interested in this game). I asked Scott if he could perhaps contact them to see if they have an email address that could be used for sending mails on this subject but the only mail he used was support@macsoftgames.com. Otherwise it's the (rarely successful) online petition I guess.

Ghost Master Game Demo available
A news item at MacGamer mentions there's a demo of Ghost Master avaiable. (133MB English, 177MB multi-language version downloads.)
Since the download is so large, you might want to read some reviews of the full game (PC version only shipped to date, Mac version due next week) to see if it's something you'd be interested in. The reviews I saw were pretty positive but it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

G5 Owner Comments on isolating PS Fan Noise
The reader that originally sent the comments on PowerMac G4 "Oscillating Buzzing Noise (OBN)" (added previously to the page of G5 Noise/Tips) sent an update that he isolated the noise (which some equate to the sound f an Aquarium Air Pump) and that Apple is going to replace the noisy fan:
" "hi mike, as you may recall, last week i sent you a .m4a file of the sound and now i have the solution for this problem (more or less). the drum beats on and more people are posting all the time about this problem. the thread on the apple discussion forum has the most of any G5 topics, 155 right now.

I hope for this to be the penultimate episode in my ongoing saga, battling against the oscillating humming noise of my new dual G5. here it is:

last week it was posted on theapple forums that--if one were daring--one could in fact touch, and thus stop, the front fans on the power supply one at a time, by reaching finger around the bottom shelf of the inside of the G5. i used a flashlight pressed up to the grill to verify that the fans were in fact there, and then reached my finger down into the abyss, and in fact it was fairly simple, and i can say from experience (as the first thing i did was hit a spinning fan blade, and it was nothing) that it is not dangerous. i then pressed down on the hub of the left fan until it stopped and there was no change in the OBN, and then i stopped the right fan and--
hallelujah!!!

--for a few brief moments my G5 sounded like it was supposed to sound. and it was quiet, sweetly quiet, and then of course i let go of the fan and the OBN came roaring back. the OBN makes the computer AT LEAST three times as loud as it was with the fan stopped. it was a great moment because the mystery had been solved, and now i had a new challenge: how to fix it (or more properly, how to get it fixed).

a few days after i discovered that the right front power supply fan was the source of all the noise, i finished the print project i was working on and called apple again. as you may remember on my first call i was blown off and told to take it to a authorized service center (there are none closer than an hour to me) and they would 'look' at it. i balked at that because this is my work machine and i couldn't sit around for a week or more while they evaluated it, then ordered a part, then waited for it, etc. my second call was much more successful, i assume mostly due to the fact that i now knew exactly what the problem was. i explained the problem in detail to the tech support guy, who was very nice and polite, and also explained why i needed a solution to get this fixed with only a day or two of down time. he checked and found the part number for that particular fan, and confirmed that it was NOT a customer-installable part. he suggested that a service center could order the part ahead of time, and that i could just bring the G5 in and have the fan replaced. he gave me a case # that would smooth the ride at the service center, and i thanked him for being so helpful.
i then called my favorite mac store in salem, oregon (the computer store) told them of the plan and the case#, and scheduled to bring it in next thursday and get it back by friday night (hello, panther?!). they ordered the part today and we should be in business.

so, everything is lined up for this problem to be remedied, for me at least. i will let you know how it goes, and if it does, in fact, solve the problem.
thanks!! paul"

I hope Paul will report back after a week or two of use with the replaced fan to see if the noise returns. Hopefully it won't.

Reader Tip for OS X Drives not Mounting
(from a recent reader post)

"I've had two different external drives fail to show up on the desktop, but were mounted and accessible from the /Volumes folder. Both drives were functioning normally until I disconnected the drives before unmounting them. They would work normally on my home system so I knew there wasn't anything with the drives and had to be my work system.
I noticed in my work /Volumes folder I had an invisible file
"._volumename"
for each drive that wouldn't show up on the desktop. I deleted these files before I re-attaching the drives and now they show up on my desktop.

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
