| ATTO G5 related Driver/Firmware Updates for UL4S/UL4D Cards |
| A reader sent a note that a new ATTO firmware/driver update for the UL4 series SCSI cards fixed a problem he had with the card in a G5. (see PCI card section of our G5 tech docs/updates/compat. page for previous reports from ATTO and Adaptec SCSI card owners.)
"
You might want to know that ATTO now has new firmware and drivers for
the UL4 cards listed on their site. I downloaded them, updated the
firmware with my G4 and then installed the card in the G5 and it now
boots and so far runs great.
Doyle Y.
"
I asked him which card he had - UL4D or UL4S (retail version not OEM I assume since the flasher normally won't work with OEM cards) and he said a retail UL4S. (Please include as much detail as possible in reports, Thanks.) I went to ATTO's site and found the links to the downloads of the (beta) firmware/driver updates. Both the UL4S drivers page and the UL4D drivers page include this note on the G5 related update:
"
Mac OS X Version 2.10b (File Size 972k)
This is a beta driver release of the ExpressPCI UL4D/UL4S firmware and drivers. This beta release supports the G5 platform. Carefully review the Read Me for update instructions and general
release notes BEFORE starting the update. G5 Users must update to this beta release for the adapters to work in this system. You will also need the latest version of the ATTO ExpressPCI Configuration Tool (v2.5) and Ultra 320 flash bundle to complete the update. We recommend that all G4 users continue to use the V2.01 driver release.
"
As of almost noon Eastern, only the UL4D and UL4S cards had the update - the pages for the UL3D and UL3S card drivers did not show a new update (yet at least).

| Comments on Toast 6.0.1 shipping in Germany |
| Although I don't see any updates yet posted at Roxio's website for Toast 6.0, a reader said that in Germany new copies of toast 6 are version 6.0.1.
"Mike,
two independent news:
1.) Maybe that is important to know: The Pioneer DVR-106RD is an relabeled ACER drive.
http://www.acer.com.hk/english/news/news61.html.
(a recent report in the drive db here on the DVR-106RD said it was not supported even in 10.2.8 where the standard DVR-106/106D is. I can't remember the name of the reader that reported that or if he tried patchburn, but he later said he returned the drive and bought a standard 106 model that worked.)
2.) TOAST 6 being sold in Germany is actually Ver. 6.0.1 which should not have issues with Pioneer DVR-106 drives anymore (unconfirmed). I am wondering when an update for 6.0.0 users will be issued.
Cheers,
Joachim S."
Hopefully the 6.0.1 update for existing owners (and an update to Toast 5.2.1 which also has the issue) will appear soon and actually fix the lack of DVD burning Buffer Underrun support (regardless if using DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs) so many DVR-106 owners have complained about - it's also missing with a Plextor PX-708A drive here - in both Toast 5.2.1 and Toast 6.0.
If anyone buys a new copy of Toast 6 and it's v6.0.1 let me know and if you own a DVR-106, see if Buffer Underrun prevention support is enabled when burning DVDs
(Update - a reader on Thursday wrote he is able to select buffer underrun prevention when buring a DVD to a DVR-106 drive in Toast 6.0.1.)

| Applescript tip for Disabling Nap Mode on G5 at Boot |
| Yesterday's news had a note that Apple had updated the CHUD Tools to 3.0.1. As mentioned here previously, using CHUD to disable "Nap" mode was a common tip to stop some G5 noises (chirps/beeping, etc.) but the setting is reset after every reboot. A reader sent a note/tip on using Applescript to disable Nap mode automatically at each startup:
"
One thing I noticed (with CHUD 3.0.1), and it might have been in the previous version and I missed it, there is a command line version of the preference pane.
From a terminal window, you can enter:
to turn off the nap and the noises.
Expanding on this, a little Applescript droplet can be created and
added to the login items preference so that napping can be turned off
automatically on restart or reboot:
do shell script "hwprefs cpu_nap=false"
Save as an application away you go.
John T.
"
I've not tried this personally yet but I've added John's tip to the previous page on G5 noise/tips.

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
