| MOTU PCI-324 and PCI-424 OS X 1.03 Driver Update |
"
Couldn't find any mention of this on your website, so hopefully I'm the first to report it.
New version of PCI-324 OS X driver is available, version 1.03. (the PCI-424 linked page also lists v1.03 dated 10/7/2003) I have not had a chance to go home and install it, so no user report from me, but definitely something people might want to know about if they are having trouble, such as myself, with kernal panics.
http://www.motu.com/english/download/index.html
Says 10.07.03 on the website. I check for an update about once a week, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it. No details as to what is new in this version, however.
Regards, Gary G.
"
The "Firewire Software" link there also lists a 10/1/2003 dated 1.06 driver:
"
Installer contains a version 1.06 driver update for the MOTU 828, 896 and 828mk2. The install for the 828mk2 also provides the MIDI Drivers, Firewire Cuemix Console, and the Firewire SMPTE Console.
This version contains minor compatibility updates for OSX 10.2.7 and G5 computers.
Earlier versions of the firewire driver may cause a kernel panic under
10.2.8. The current driver fixes this problem.
"
I don't own any MOTU products but I'll add this to the previous page of MOTU OS X Driver feedback and welcome any feedback on the drivers. (Include system/card/software details in reports - thanks)

| ATTO Express Config Tool 2.50 version 2 (no code changes) |
| (from a reader post - also see the updated comments below that there is no actual code change in the 'v2' release.)
"
Anyone notice that VersionTracker and MacUpdate list a "version 2" of the ATTO Express config tool 2.50 that caused so much trouble, confusion and for some (me included) very slow disk I/O.
When I go to ATTO Software downloads and check, there is nothing in the read me or anywhere else that anything has changed. Even launching the installer, no date or version chanages noted. Only when you look at the STATUS bar in Safari etc do you see a "...v2" But VT only downloads the ExpressPCI Conig Tool 2.50v2, not the 2.00 v.2 driver you would need, or the flash files. VT should just send users to ATTO site (as they often do ("form") for Apple etc. It's misleading. (I too wish there was a simplier way for someone to download the various ATTO updates/drivers/firmware. It would be nice if they had a single page for each card model/series that listed all the links to download the latest driver, firmware and utility software.-Mike)
Too bad, too, ATTO stopped support of the UL2D (useful in Beige), seeing how they do still support the PSC card (limited to 40MB/s instead of the 80MB/s of the UL2D). (I've tried the UL3S, but it would only work in OS X, not OS 9, and only AFTER I had OS X 10.2.4+ running. Useful for the SCSI drives out there now, but not when you can get SATA card and drive for under $200.
ATTO has a confusing way of directing users to the download page for their particular card and driver firmware.

"
A reader replied to this posting saying he checked the actual files and there is no actual changes in the 'new' version:
"
Mike, re: the news page item noting the "2.50v2" config tool and
"2.00v2" driver updates for Atto SCSI cards. I have just downloaded
these and bitwise compared the installer apps you get after extracting
the archives to the previous 2.50 and 2.00 versions. There are
absolutely no differences, meaning this is not really an update.
I suspect that it's merely a rerelease to address the problems when
extracting installer apps from .sit files using Stuffit 8.0. 8.0 no
longer sets the UNIX execute permission bit on all files extracted from
archive formats which do not store UNIX permissions bits (such as the
original .sit format). The Atto v. 2.50 config tool and v. 2.00 driver
releases were distributed as a .sit archive of the installer app, which
in turn (for reasons known only to Atto) was archived into .tgz
archive. The "v2" releases of the config tool and driver simply
eliminate the Stuffit step; the installer app is now directly stored in
the .tgz file. (Which is what they should have done in the first place
given that it's silly to double archive the installer; if they'd done
that or used .sitx format the rerelease would have been unnecessary.)

The previous notes/links to ATTO's 2.0 driver update for OS X (which also noted G5 support) as well as firmware updates (for retail cards) was linked in the news here back in August. Despite the 2.0 driver noting G5 support and past comments on ATTO SCSI card G5 compatibility from ATTO, the reports here from G5 owners to date hasn't been very positive in general (most models of their cards were reported to have problems in G5s based on user reports here - although not all of them. See the PCI compatibility section of the G5 Tech Info/Updates/Compatibility page.)

| Changes in later Panther Builds regarding Optical Drive Burn Support Mods |
| A reader wrote yesterday about changes in later builds of Panther regarding burn support mods for unsupported drives. (I had posted a page on Panther Burn Support Mods back on June 27th, but this reader said that those edits don't work with later Builds.
"
...sorry I missed the excellent June post. It was correct for the then-current Panther builds.
HOWEVER, the point of my note was that "edit by hand" of the
DeviceSupport.drprofile NO LONGER WORKS in Panther. I know it worked in build 7B49 and earlier, and does not work in 7B78 and later...since I did not see every build, I'm not sure exactly where it changed. I suspect that there is nothing you can easily do in DeviceSupport.drprofile alone to make it work.
So far I see no negative impact from using the entire 7B49
DiscRecording.framework in 7B85. When I have a chance I'll see if I can figure out where the apparent software block is within 7B85's
DiscRecording.framework.
Overall, Apple seems to be getting significantly more aggressive in Panther about making it more difficult to use 3rd party upgrades. As you alluded to today, "not supported" is no big deal, but deliberately blocked just makes more work for the too few Ryan Rempels (Xpostfacto) & Christian Moellers (PatchBurn) in the Mac community.
Bill
"
I've updated the previous page on Panther burn support mods to include the above. Hopefully Christian will release a 10.3 compatible version of PatchBurn after 10.3 is shipping.

| PB G3 Wallstreet owner comments on RagePro driver mod with 10.2.8 |
| Although some thought the RagePro driver loading tip first noted here in June 2002 wasn't needed for later OS X versions, a reader email today said it worked/helped with OS X 10.2.8.
"
Hi Mike, I recently installed the 10.2.8 (6R73) Combo updater on my 10.2.6 install running on a WallStreet II Rage Pro. I believe this upgrade installed a new RagePro.kext that disabled the modifications detailed on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/osx_ragepro_driver_tip.html
.
I reapplied the mod and the kext now loads properly (verified using the "kextstat" terminal command). (it was not loading previously) I have encountered no problems so far.
Reapplying the mod has made general graphics tasks much more snappy than on the unmodified 10.2.8 install. Thanks for the great site,
Larry

| More on G5 Up-To-Date 10.3 orders, Serial Numbers and Qualification |
| (Updated info and reports from readers on order confirmations, the S/N issue and the PDF file vs up-to-date web page qualifying date differences.)
|
Yesterday around noon I called the 800 number to order the G5 up-to-date 10.3 upgrade and was given a order number (015-00xxxxx), but never received (as of today) an email confirmation, even though a friend (w/new PowerBook G4) that ordered about 8 hours later using the online form said he received 2 emails from Apple. After the confusion on serial numbers and the conflicting info on the web page vs the G5 up-to-date PDF Coupon (which said orders "on or after August 16th" vs "regardless of purchase date" - see last night's news item) I tried to find out why I didn't get a confirmation email. What a frustrating experience... after 4 calls (two to the Apple store, two to the up-to-date order line) nobody has been able to verify my order number. The apple store people were very polite and helpful but said they can't check order numbers for the up-to-date sales like mine (indicating that was handled elsewhere). I get the feeling they contracted that out (at least the phone ordering from their comments). The phone order number given was also different than the usual online orders (015-0000xxx).
During repeated calls to the up-to-date order line I was told they cannot (or will not most likely) check my order status or order number. (If they entered it into a computer, they surely should be able to check for that information.) Twice I was told to call the Apple store for status, but again they couldn't help. Since the email address I gave them has no apple store account - I can't use the online order status system either (assuming that would be possible anyway). If their claim that no order confirmations were going to be sent on these orders (I was told that on the phone today by someone at the up-to-date order line) - then why did they ask me for an email address to send it when I placed the order?
I don't know if I'm even going to bother wasting any more time on this (with more calls) but I wonder if any G5 owners that called in their order have gotten any email confirmations. (Some readers have said for their online order they did get an email confirmation (often quickly), but I'm curious about orders via phone.) If you ordered the G5 update via phone and have (or haven't) gotten a confirmation, let me know. Thanks. (see below - at least one reader has gotten an email confirmation from a phone order, but he's from Scotland.)
BTW - I told an apple store employee about the discrepancy between the up-to-date web page G5 text ("regardless of purchase date") vs. the PDF G5 up-to-date coupon (which as of this morning still mentioned the "on or after August 16th, 2003" qualifier) and he said he was notifying his supervisor about this. (Also said they generally consider the ship date/invoice date, not the pre-order date for the G5 early orders.) He also said that as far as he knew, any G5 purchase date qualified for the $19.95 upgrade to 10.3.
Also I've gotten more mails that the tip to not include a "-" in the serial number (for those that took it from ASP, rather than the system marking) helped, although a few G5 owners still said their S/N was not accepted even w/o any dashes even when calling in to order. Also as I said yesterday, I've asked those that had S/N problems to make sure they did not mistake a 5 for an S, a zero for an O, etc. but that is not the problem apparently. One reader said he was told that there seems to be a batch of S/Ns that are not in the computer.
"
fyi- My dual g5 serial number (without hyphens) was not accepted by the
site. I called the apple number to do it over the phone- and the apple
operator couldn't validate the serial number either.
I was told by the operator that there's a batch of G5s with serial numbers that will not work with the Up to Date System. I was told to mail or fax the PDF in
to have my order manually handled.
jonathan h.
"
Another mail just received said that the S/N issue has now been "resolved" however:
"
I called Apple today because the on-line form didn't work for me to
qualify for the Up-To-Date. Speaking with the rep on the phone, she told me
the issue regarding s/n's and G5s was "resolved", but that I would have
still to fax or mail the form and reciept to Apple because my s/n will not
work.
I find this incredibly horrible customer service, especially since the G5
was delayed in shipment. I can't understand why a company like Apple would
fail in such a ,to me, elemental way.
I'm going to watch your website for details.
Steve B.
(he later wrote)
I just wanted to suggest maybe calling Apple and discussing with Customer
Relations how people feel about the issue. I was polite, but firm because I
wanted to file a complain. They took my complaint and gave me a reference
number. The woman I spoke with found my serial number very quickly, asked me
to hold on, and contacted the Apple Store. I was actually optimistic until
she came back and told me what I had already known.
Apple Customer Relations (800) 767-2775
Steve B.
"
I agree it's been so much more trouble than it should have been - but the Apple store employees I spoke to were extremely willing to help, but could not verify my order. I really wish they had handled the update program phone orders themselves and/or had the ordering system in their standard database, which apparently isn't the case at least for phone orders like mine (order numbers like 015-xxxxxx). I wish the up-to-date person I spoke to (twice) had been as willing to help as Apple's store employees.
One reader from the Netherlands said he was refused due to the August 16th date (in the PDF file, although I was told this really means a ship date not order date, but I was told that any G5 purchase date should qualify, as said on the up-to-date page text. )
"
I called the Applestore (netherlands) because my serial nr was rejected
online, they told me that I couldn't apply for the up-to-date 10.3
because my G5 was ordered before august 16th. I told them that although
I did order it quite a while ago, I received it just 3 weeks ago (after
16th august). I was told to pay the full price if I ever wanted 10.3 ..
I asked for customers relations but they were not there at that time
(evening)
I will call them back tomorrow and ask for a supervisor or Customers
Relations and file a complaint.
Tony
"
Any purchase date of a G5 should qualify but I guess the person Tony spoke to took the PDF file comments literally (order date, not ship date).
So far only one G5 owner (that ordered via phone at least) has written that he's gotten an email confirmation, but he's from Scotland:
"
I received my confirmation email this morning for my up-to-date order
for 10.3 based on the fact that I previously purchased a G5 dual. When
I ordered they didn't ask for my serial only my web order number which
was all i had on me at the time I called the order in. I'm based in
Scotland and the order was done through the Apple Ireland call center
(which I believe covers all the EURO zone) Hope this helps
regards Bob B.
"
So now I really wonder why after 24hrs + I still have no confirmation. I really wish Apple had handled the phone orders on their standard store ordering system so that I could at least verify the status . As I said last night, even if the upgrade never arrives (I suspect it will but after all the problems with this update program, anything's possible), I'll still buy 10.3, but will wait to see the first compatibility and bug reports first. The only other G5 owner phone order email I've gotten so far says he's also not gotten an order confirmation yet.
"
I called on Weds Oct 8 and as of now, Thurs, Oct 9, 1:20PM have not
received any email notice.
John O.
"
This afternoon I tried the online up-to-date form and it shows my S/N has already been used for an update -which makes me feel a bit better at least. I guess we'll get an email when it ships, unless they entered my email address incorrectly (which is one thing I wanted to verify with them as a possible cause for no email conf. being received - but they were not willing to even check. It would have taken 30 seconds probably while I was on the phone with the up-to-date order person, but they refused to even try.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
