More Avid FreeDV problem reports, Tip/Notes on new installer from Avid
About a dozen readers replied today to the earlier post on problems with Avid's FreeDV app for OS X. One noted a tip from Avid that he said didn't help his system. Based on reports, one common factor in the problems is 10.2.8 - although a total of three (so far) 10.2.8 users said they had no problems with FreeDV. (Two panther users also noted no problems) A revised installer is said to be available soon. Details

First Avid FreeDV app report notes OS X won't boot after Install
(Update - see the later news item above for more FreeDV reports and tips)
Yesterday's news had a note that Avid had a "FreeDV" app available for OS X. The first reader to report on using it however sent a warning that I hope isn't typical. (I've not installed it yet personally and wouldn't after reading these reports.)

" Installed Free DV and it wasted my OSX install.
I left a post on the Avid form and others are having this problem. Here's the thread.
http://www.avid.com/community/forums/Forum41/HTML/000017.html
Just thought others should know.
Bill A
(please include system, OS version etc. details in problem reports. Checking his comments in that post ("woodbass") shows he had a G4/733 (Digital audio?) with 10.2.8 current build, and reported a freeze at boot - gray screen with black stripe.) "

That forum thread also had several other problem reports from other Mac model owners, athough one post didn't note a problem. Several other readers replied to this post (most saying they too had seen the same problem).
If any other readers have installed FreeDV, let me know if you've seen problems. (Include OS and system/config details such as any installed PCI cards, any addon OS mods/software, etc. in reports since it may help isolate why some are ok and others not.)

10.2.8 Reports page Updated
I've added more reader feedback from G5, G4 and G3 owners to the 10.2.8 (6R73) reports page. Included in the latest update is an Xserve owner report on full-duplex problems, an iBook G3/800 owner reporting some ram was no longer recognized and an update from the G4 upgraded B&W G3 owner that said his ethernet/network problem has disappeared (after several reboots he said). See the page for full details/comments.

G5 Noise Reports/Tips page Updated
I've updated the previous page of G5 Noise reports and Tips to include an email from a G5 owner on an "Oscillating Humming noise" that he thinks is coming from the Power Supply (lower area). I hear a (constant) humming from my Dual G5 - but investigation shows it's coming from the upper area (near the hard drive/hard drive cooling fan), not from the PS area (and isn't the 9800 Pro's fan either).

Strange USB activity during Toast 6 burns to Firewire Drive
I've not tested for this with any other systems, but with the Dual G5 here, when burning to a Firewire drive (Plextor PX-708A) using Toast 6, I saw intermittent USB activity (repeatedly). I'm using a corded USB Logitech wheel mouse (no Logitech drivers installed) and I could see the mouse "light up" every few seconds during the burn phase. (The LED would get bright, dim, then brighten again repeatedly during the burn phase.) This didn't happen during reads from the drive (except once during the initial mounting of a DVD+R burned disc - not seen during copies from the drive/disc to the hard drive).
I don't remember noticing this during burns to the internal IDE drive and if I had used the stock Apple mouse I may not have noticed it. (The taller Logitech Mouse made it more visible.) I don't know if it's polling the USB bus or what is happening, but it seemed to only happen during the burn phase so I don't think it should be looking/polling for USB devices during that operation.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed this with Toast 6 (or any other verison) with their G5 or other model Mac. If you have (or haven't) seen this effect burning with Toast burns to a Firewire drive, let me know. (include info on system, drive and Toast version in reports - Thanks.)

USB 2.0 PCI card Deep Sleep Reports Page Updated
I've updated the page of Firewire, USB 2.0 and FW/USB PCI card deep sleep support for the latest reader feedback. (Quicksilver owner report on a model F5U220 5-Port Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card, noting no sleep problems, but no USB 2.0 drivers installed. Card chipset is NEC he said, so perhaps 10.2.8 has native USB 2.0 support for it.)

XBench 1.1.3 Update
There's another update to Xbench (v1.1.3) released yesterday. Here's the changes listed:

  • Fixed a CPU test crash on G5s
  • Fixed CPU and cache speed reporting on iBooks/PowerBooks under 10.2.8

Version 1.1.3 still reports incorrect L2 and L3 speeds with some systems here - for example my Digital Audio G4 with Giga Designs G4/1.25GHz CPU upgrade (running at 1.467GHz) has Xbench reporting the L2 cache at 1/2 speed and the L3 cache at 4GHz. Speed reporting on a G5 and PowerBook G4 were correct however.
(Speaking of the Giga Design 1.25GHz upgrade (new 7455B CPU model), it's been running rock solid at 1.467GHz in my Digital Audio (w/o any voltage boost) for the last week in heavy use. I can't guarantee that every sample will do this, but I've been impressed by this one. I should have a full review posted here this week.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
