DVD Studio Pro 2.0.2 Update
Apple's DVD Studio Pro page lists a 2.0.2 update:

" What's New in DVD Studio Pro 2.0.2 Combined Update
The combined update includes DVD Studio Pro 2.0.1 and DVD Studio Pro 2.0.2 and is strongly recommended for all users of DVD Studio Pro 2. This update includes French, German and Japanese localizations as well as providing a number of other improvements. The DVD Studio Pro 2.0.2 update is the only update available for DVD Studio Pro 2."

The Download page Form requires a DVD Studio Pro 2 serial number to get the update.

Notes on Different G5 Boot Rom Versions
(Updated with more reports)
Earlier today I posted a note about early G5 shipments reportedly having problems with mixing 3rd party RAM with the OEM RAM and mentioned the boot rom version (5.0.2f2) of the S/N XB337xxxxx Dual G5 here (shipped 9/15). A UK reader with a later S/N Dual G5 than mine reported:

" Dual 2 Ghz BTO in UK
CK338xxS-NVB
(boot rom version) 5.0.5f0
Tan "

Another Dual G5 owner (very recent shipment) wrote he has an even later boot rom version:

" Mike, I got my G5 Dual 1 week ago, Just looked at the Boot rom version and it is newer than others mentiond in todays news."

    Machine model
    PowerMac7,2 (version = 2.2)
    Boot Rom: 5.0.7f0

And another report of 5.0.7f0 firmware:

" Mike, we have three CTO machines, built 9/19 (1) and 9/22 (2) boot Rom on all three - 5.0.7f0
-- Fred C.
General Manager
TheTroupe Modern Media Design & Production "

A reader with 5.0.7f0 firmware noted he still had problems using CL2 dimms (even without any CL3 OEM dimms installed based on his previous comments) - so there's still a requirement for DIMMs to have CL3 timing in the SPD.

Maybe Apple is waiting to accumulate fixes/changes before releasing a public update - but I'm hoping they will soon release a firmware update for the G5s which might solve the RAM issue (noted earlier) and perhaps other quirks that some owners have seen.

8500 Owner notes ATI Patch for LightWave 3D 7.5c Didn't Help
This is the first reader feedback on the ATI patch for the Lightwave 3D 7.5/OS X issue noted released today:

" I have tested it and it does not work with the following configuration:

DP G4 500
ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Edition
OS X 10.2.8
LW 7.5 or LW 7.5.c
-Teri T."

I asked if he had run repair permissions (from disk utility) after the ATI update. It may not help but I do this after any ATI driver update for OS X and it usually shows a lot of corrections.
(FYI - One 8500 AGP card user wrote that this patch helped with problems he'd seen with MOTIONBUILDER 4.02 and the MOTIONBUILDER 5 demo.)

I welcome other reports from LW 7.5c users w/8500, 9000 or 9000 Mobility graphics that applied the update. (Please include Mac model/graphics chip used, OS X version, etc. in reports. Thanks)

ATI Posts Update to address Lightwave 3D/OS X Issue (may affect Maya also)
Bruno of ATI sent an email today that the patch for the Lightwave 3D issues with some ATI graphics chips (Radeon 8500, 9000 and Mobility 9000 reportedly) noted recently here has been posted at http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4267.html.

" LightWave may hang while rotating an object or using Modeler This information applies to the following configuration:
  • RADEON 8500 MAC EDITION
  • RADEON 9000 PRO MAC EDITION
(and 9000 Mobility in some PowerBook G4s per reports)
  • Mac OS X version 10.2.5 to 10.2.8
  • Newtek LightWave 7.5c

The system may hang while rotating an object or using Modeler in Lightwave. This issue does not occur in earlier versions of Mac OS X.

Users experiencing this issue are advised to download and install the ATI RADEON 8500/9000 HotFix for LightWave 3D.
Notes:
Before you install this hotfix, please read the release notes.
If Mac OS X is updated to 10.2.6 or 10.2.8 afterwards, this hotfix will have to be reinstalled. "

The release notes mention that Alias' Maya may also be affected. I've added this info to the previous page with the ATI/LW 3D OS X driver problem reports which includes info on how to reproduce the problem.
I welcome feedback from those that were affected by this after applying the update. (Please include Mac model/graphics chip used, OS X version, etc. in reports. Thanks)

G5 and USB Camera and Scanner Reports
I decided to separate Camera and Scanner reports from the earlier post on G5 problems with some other 3rd party USB devices. I'll be accumulating G5/USB device reports for a separate page later (linked off the main G5 page here on compatibility info on PCI cards, RAM, etc. - Also you can post USB and Firewire device reports in the database here selecting PowerMac G5 as the mac model.)

" I also have a problem connecting my camera to my g5. I have a Canon s50, when i connect it to the computer, it opens iphoto and soon freezes.
I also have a usb card reader for the flash card, and when i connect it to the g5 the same thing happens.
My old sony digital camera has the same problem with the g5.
All 3 items work fine with iphoto on my powerbook.
Adam M. "

I wrote Adam that there's a Oct. 1st 2003 firmware update for the S50 (and some other Canon models) at Canon's firmware updates page. The S50 specific 2.0 Firmware update page doesn't mention improving problems with USB connections to computers but I asked if he tried it to report back.
I booted the Dual G5 here and connected my Canon PowerShot S230 (firmare v1.0.2 applied some months ago) and it worked fine. (iPhoto launched and imported the images from the CF card in the camera OK.)
Here's the first USB Scanner problem report from a G5 owner:

" Since I received my G5, I have had problems with my microtek 5900 usb2 scanner. I know the scanner is working fine because it works fine with my emac.
The application I use is scanwizard 5 v 7.10 from microtek. This app has three components, the first is microtek scanner finder that scans the USB ports to find the device. There seems to be a problem with this app and the G5 because it hangs if I start the G5 with the scanner connected and on. If I do the startup without connecting the scanner and plug it in after, the scanner finder finds the device and I can use it.
The second app is microtek scanner config and this one seems OK although it depends on the scanner finder (if no device is found or scanner finder hangs this app also hangs). The third app is microtek scanwizard 5 wich also seems to have a problem with the overview button (or the automatic overview in basic mode), which also hangs the app.

To my comprehension there seems to be a USB problem and also probably a software problem. I have called Microtek support and they told me that some G5 owners had no problem with the scanner and the same software but others had the same problem I had. They think it might be related to different rev. of G5's.
Thanks Jean D. "

If any other 5900 Scanner owner has used it with a G5, let me know. (Other scanner and camera reports are also welcome - Firewire or USB.)
I've added these reports to a separate page on G5 USB compatibility.

Note on Early G5 Shipments and Problems with OEM + 3rd Party RAM Mixing
In a follow-up to the previous posting on 3rd party RAM issues (i.e. if no CL3 timing in the SPD) mentioned in Monday's news, a reader sent a note:

"Apple has sent a tech note to european resellers telling them about the RAM in the first units delivered in Europe, as described below. It seems it functions as is, but that when 3rd party RAM is added KPs (kernel panics) ensue.
I got it from a french web site (Macbidouille) who got it from a german web site( Macnews.de). Just thought you should know, since you have reported such problems (with CAS latencies) that might be related. Maybe we can have dual G5s running CAS 2 RAM !

(Update - macbidouille later reported the issue was only with OEM Hynix modules and that removing them was the recommended solution.)

    Affected units
  • 1.8GHz product serial number below CK339yyyPAZ, CK339yyyQ66, CK339yyyQ6Z, CK339yyyPB2, or CK339yyyQ68
  • 1.8GHz CTO configuration product serial number below CK339yyyNVA
  • 2.0GHz product serial number below CK339yyyPB0
  • 2.0GHz CTO configuration product serial number below CK339yyyNVB

Units with serial number greater than CK339xxxxxx are not affected.
Units with serial number starting with YMxxxxxxxx are not affected.

The Dual G5 (USA shipment on 9/15) here has a S/N of "XB337...", so I wonder if this one is affected (i.e. is the letter prefix or just the first 3 numbers a key factor - the numbers I'd assume.) However it's working fine so far with two 3rd-party CL3 512MB PC3200 Dimms (no kernel panics to date but I don't get to use it as often as I like.) Apple has a kbase doc on locating the G5 S/N for those that want to check - remove the cover and it's on the lower area where the door mates to the case - Apple system profiler will also report it.
I wonder is this really an issue with the RAM shipped in them or the system/firmware of the early units? The boot rom version in this Dual G5 (s/n XB337...) per Apple System Profiler is: 5.0.2f2, which I have run with two CL3 512MB dimms + the OEM CL3 256MB dimms without any KP's (so far). (If anyone has later or different G5 boot rom version let me know - see the later news item above for initial reports - 5.0.7f0 is the latest reported to date.)
On a related note - a recent email from a G5 buyer said his Apple order listing shows "DDR440" memory instead of the usual "DDR400" listing. (Not that the memory bus is going to run at the higher speed.)

G5 owner comments on USB Port Issues with some 3rd party devices
(Updated with more reports on USB devices and notes on KVMs. Some G4/PowerBook owners also wrote about USB device issues but I've not posted them here since this is for G5 reports only.)
I think there's been some threads in Apple's G5 forums regarding USB devices (incl. keyboard/mouse) but here's a reader email on an issue he's seen:

" I have a Logitech cordless optical mouse. The receiver is plugged in to the rear of the keyboard - the keyboard and a printer are plugged into the rear of the system. I wanted to download some pictures I took with my Olympus C3000 camera, so I plugged it into the front USB port.
When Image Capture came up and I moved the mouse into it's window, the mouse froze. I thought the system had frozen, but I could command-tab to other apps. If I unplugged the mouse receiver from the keyboard and plugged it back in, the mouse would move again, until I went to Image Capture. I also noticed the LED on the camera that indicates activity to the memory card was blinking, like it was trying to read from the card, even though I hadn't started the transfer yet. I ended up plugging the Apple mouse into the second USB port on the keyboard and then the cursor worked fine, even with the receiver still plugged in. The Logitech mouse still would not work. When I was finished transfering pictures, I quit Image Capture, removed the Apple mouse, and removed/inserted the Logitech reciever and everything was fine again.

I'm going to try again tonight to see if there is some sort of conflict.
John T."

Another G5 owner replied:

" Mike, I just bought a stock Dual G5. I have a 4 port ioGear KVM switch that switches between a Dual G5, Dual G4/450 and a PC. The keyboard/mouse is a Logitech Navigator wireless unit. The keyboard receiver plugs into the switch and the computers plug into the KVM.

The G5 will not take eject commands from the keyboard. The mouse works fine. All of the other computers operate normally with the keyboard and mouse. To workaround the problem I enabled the eject menu on the G5.
David B. "

Another reader replied to the G5/KVM switch report (below)

"I recently installed an IOGEAR MiniView III here at work to switch between my PowerMac G4/450 and my Dell (config unknown, don't care). I have an Apple Pro keyboard and a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer hooked up to it and not only does the eject button not work, neither do the volume controls nor the mouse buttons other than the left & right.
It appears the KVM switch does not pass these inputs. This is quite frustrating since everything worked fine when I was using my LaCie monitor to switch between the two. Trouble is, the input hooked up to the Dell "blew up" when I put a faster video card in that system. Had to go with an external solution as a result. The Belkin SOHO KVM I tried previously had even worse results (phantom keystrokes, etc.) than the IOGEAR.
Hope this helps.

Another reader replied with a KVM note:

"Mike, Just wanted to let you know that the problem a user was having with the IOGear KVM not working with the the special function keys on the apple keyboard is well known, and has been an issue since the 3nd revision of the MiniView KVM (and from other manufacturers). Other special keys and hot keys do not work either.
Check this link:
http://www.iogear.com/support/til/index.php?func=TILDisplay&TIL_ID=10068
"USB devices, specifically mice and keyboards, are each given a VID number (Vendor Identification) upon release. This VID# is read by your computers' OS's and the device installed; however, since many mouse and keyboard manufacturers hold the rights to the VID# of their product, we cannot "emulate" or "copy" it without their written consent.
At the release of our MiniView II KVM, we anticipated this to be resolved shortly; however, that has not been the case in our dealings with many mouse and keyboard manufacturers. Currently, we are only able to "emulate" a standard, full-size USB keyboard; however, keyboard shortcut keys (E-Mail, Internet, Eject, Volume, etc.) are not guaranteed to function. We hope to support these features in the future in both our current and future line of USB KVM products. The same holds true with mice. Since we are only able to emulate the standard, Microsoft-compatible Intellimouse (Two Button with Wheel), any extra features on mice are not guaranteed to function.. "

I had a Miniview II that died, replaced it with a Miniview III. Since the MVII DOES pass the VID and the III does not, I ended up selling the III and getting another II just because of this reason. Why have multi-button USB devices if none of the special keys work.
-Eric

I've added these reports to a separate page on G5 USB compatibility.

If any other G5 owners have seen any problems with any 3rd party devices , let me know (include system/device details, etc. - Thanks.)
Also test with USB devices plugged into the Mac rather than the keyboard if you see a problem with keyboard port use.

Firewire and FW/USB card Deep Sleep Support Reports Updated
I've updated (again) the page of reader feedback on Firewire, USB and FW/USB card deep sleep tests to add the latest reader feedback. (Report on "Adesso Inc." USB 2.0 5 port PCI card in a MDD G4, noted deep sleep OK.)

If any PowerMac G5 or G4 owners try a Firewire 400, Firewire 800 or combo USB PCI card let me know if it supports deep sleep. (Although the G5 has two FW400 and one FW800 ports, I've had a few requests for info on deep sleep support with FW cards in a G5 and more reports on Firewire 400 and 800 cards are requested especially for those that have had their onboard FW ports fail.)

Update to Navy Seals Covert Ops mod for Quake3 due Tomorrow
Todd sent a note there's a v1.9 update to Quake3 Mod "Navy Seals: Covert Operations" to be available Friday, which includes a Mac installer. The main website is www.ns-co.net. Here's a clip from the PR Todd sent:

" NS:CO 1.9 release - 01. Oct 2003
Hello Navy Seals Fans
1.9 is finally done. It was a long, hard road up to where we are now. There was various trouble hindering development during this long time, but we continued. Team Mirage itself has and still undergoes changes that I will speak of at another time.
But now let's speak of the NS:CO 1.9 release. The newest version of NS:CO will be made publicly available on Friday, the 3rd October at 19:00 GMT .
There will be a release party on IRC within our channel on quakenet ( irc.quakenet.org #ns:co ) where the links to download will be published before they will be announced on this website.
The release will be a full-install that weights 300MBs. It can also be installed over the previous versions without problems, but be careful, as your key configuration will be replaced. A backup of your q3config.cfg is advised.
NS:CO 1.9 itself will come in a Windows and a Macintosh Self-Installer as well as an OS independent ZIP version. Thanks to Gate, Glod and Thrasher for their help with the OS dependent Installers." "

They also note that a forum thread has been started to list mirror sites for the download when it's released.
