ATI Oct. 29th Driver Update to Fix Issues w/Prev. Oct Update
(from an email from Bruno of ATI)

" New release of October software update posted today (October 29-2002).
www.ati.com/support/products/mac/radeon8500/osx/radeon8500maceditionosxdrivers.html
(that page notes Oct 29th date and links to this Oct 2002 Driver update D/L page which should have the revised installer/files.- Mike)

This release addresses the known issues mentioned in your reader reports with RADEON 7000 and Warcraft 3, Maya, Lightwave and the Sachs Marine Aquarium screensaver (Mac OS X 10.2.x issues). It also addresses the previous inability to disable the ATI Config Menu icon in OS 9 after installing the new Version 3 ATI Displays and a small number of other issues we managed to squeeze in fixes for.

Anyone running Mac OS X 10.1.3-10.1.5 would not need to reinstall, but should use this new update for any installed instances of OS 9 or upgrading to 10.2.x in the future.

Please read the included readme file, which may also be found on our download page.
Thanks
Bruno F."
(ATI)

Note - Later in the day the D/L page linked to 4 ATI tech notes on what the Oct. 29th driver update fixes (bugs present in the previous Oct 2002 update)

Yamaha CRW-F1 CDRW 1.0d Firmware Update
(from a reader forum post in case any owners of this drive haven't spotted this update.)

" There's a 1.0d Firmware updater for the very nice and very fast CRW-F1 Recorder. There are OS X and Classic versions. The readme says it's for the Firewire version but mine updated fine on the IDE bus of my tower. You can grab it Here.
http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/computer/fw-10.html

...Here's what Yamaha says is new in the firmware update(s):

    What's New in 1.0d (updated: October 4-02):
  • Added 24x and 32x writing.
  • "Optimum Writespeed Control" option needs to be disabled.
  • Improved 16x and 24x writing quality of Ultra Speed CD-RW discs.

    What's New in 1.0c (updated: August 27-02):
  • Added support for following CD-R discs for 44x writing. Maxell (32x), NANYA (48x), Daxon (40x), Prodisc (48x)
  • Improved writing quality of CD-R discs by refined running optimum power control.
  • Fixed problem with DiscT@2 where error message comes up if you try to burn images/graphics to the outer edge of a disc.
  • Fixed problem where the drive icon of CRW-F1 disappears if you load/eject a CD repeatedly

I checked the recorder in Toast 5.2 after the update and it has a checkbox for "Optimum Writespeed Control" that I never noticed previously but perhaps I never looked before.
Kudos to Yamaha for putting out 2 Mac versions of the Firmware update (even if I can't do T@2 )
Cheers
Milhouse"

The forum thread has other comments on T@2 labelling.

Reader Request - Any Sonnet G4/800 CPU Card Owners Running Linux?
(from a reader email)

" Hey Mike,
I was hoping you could post a question to your readers to see if anyone has had experience with this.
I checked your CPU upgrade database to see how people rated the G4 800 upgrade from Sonnet for the 8500/8600. I was wondering if any of your readers has experience with using this card under any version of Linux on macs. I currently use an 8500 with a Sonnet G3 375, and Debian 3.0.
I'm at a stage where I could use some more number-crunching muscle for my work. But my machine is set up to my liking, and about as stable as I'd ever need and I don't feel like asking my boss to shell out for a new one (in which case, he might threaten to buy me a PC :). The main thing I need (besides the CPU horsepower) is to be able to use 1G RAM with whatever CPU is in there.

If anyone else out there is using this card, I'd love to know what their experiences are, as well as their RAM configuration and the linux distro they run.
Thanks much.
cheers
Vinai R"

If any Sonnet G4/800 owner with a legacy Mac is running Linux with it - let me know. (I wonder if there's any Linux cache enablers for the 7455's L3 cache?)

More Feedback on iBook Radeon Mobility Firmware Mods for Dual Display Support
I've updated the page of reader reports on the firmware mod for dual display support on iBook Radeon Mobility chip versions with more reader feedback.
Since there have been no reports of it working with other than the Radeon Mobility chip based iBooks (latest models) I do not suggest anyone try it on older iBooks. (There's never any guarantee these types of mods will work for everyone - even one Radeon Mobility iBook owner noted problems.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
