More Reports from Sonnet 1GHz and Powerlogix Single and Dual 800MHz AGP/Cube Upgrades
For those that don't check the listings every newsday of updates to the Rate Your CPU Upgrade database - there were several more reports added since Friday morning's updates from Sonnet 1GHz (two G4/AGP Tower owner reports), two more Powerlogix Dual 800 reports (from G4/AGP and Dual G4 tower owners) and one G4 Cube owner report on the Powerlogix single G4/800 upgrade.
As I remember, most of these reports didn't note any wake from sleep issues - but for full details, use the search page and select either "Sonnet G4" or "PowerLogix G4" as the upgrade brand, and then select the Mac model (G4/AGP, Dual G4 or G4 Cube). Latest reports are always shown first. (Friday's news page also had a link to OWC's Dual G4/800 vs PL/Sonnet single 1GHz comparison tests)

Reader Reports on Firmware Updates for Sonnet ATA133/Tempo HD/Tempo Trio/ATA/100 Cards
Friday's news page had a story w/links to Sonnet firmware updates for their Tempo ATA/133 (non-RAID), Tempo HD, Tempo Trio and Tempo ATA/100 PCI cards to address issues with Jaguar. I've updated the previous page on Sonnet ATA/100, ATA/133/Trio issues with 10.2 to include (positive) reports from readers that these firmware updates solved problems they had previously with the cards with Jaguar/10.2.x. (The page also has links to the updates.)

Retrospect 5.0 Updater 3.1
Not sure what the exact changes are but Macupdate lists a Retrospect 5.0 Updater 3.1 today. (The only notes are the usual "...to support new drives, fix bugs, and work around problems.")

More Feedback on ATI October 2002 Driver Update
I've updated the page of reader reports on the Oct. 2002 ATI driver update with the latest reader comments/emails. One of the most recent reports include more Radeon 7000 issues (this time from OS 9.2.x users) and a PowerBook G4/800 owner report that the system fans seemed to come on more often after the update. I've not installed the Oct 2002 ATI update on my PB G4/800 DVI (Radeon 7500 mobility) but the fan still runs at high speeds sometimes, but not often except when running 3D games (which kicks the fan on high pretty quickly as noted in my PB G4/800 review.) Maybe the new drivers better enable Quartz Extreme and therefore exercise the chip more?

Reader Comments on Creative's 'Muvo' MP3 Player and 10.2
(from a reader email this weekend)

" The creative 'muvo' mp3 player, despite being boxed as 'pc only' works perfectly (no drivers needed) under 10.2 It is advertised as 'no drivers needed' for the pc, so I assumed it must run with standard mass-storage drivers (and so should work on mac). so I took the chance an got one.

The device is fantastic as well, for only about £100 you get a 64mb mp3 player which is the size of a cigarette lighter. (or the same size as one of those usb disks, since thatÃs essentially what it is). The sound is good (and probably loud enough to be banned in france).

Widescreen PC Notebook with PB G4-like Design
It's not a clone of the PowerBook G4, but Wayne Chang sent a link to a Cnet story on a new VPR Matrix 200A5 Pentium 4M 2GHz PC notebook with widescreen (15.2" 1,280x854 resolution), 512MB of DDR memory, slotted Combo drive, dual USB 2.0 ports, dual Firewire ports (unpowered though), 40GB HD and $2399 list price. The graphics chip isn't specified in that Cnet article but past models (1.7GHz, 1.8GHz) of the VPR Matrix notebooks had the 7500 Mobility (same chip as current PB G4 DVI models). The ATI 9000 Mobility is the latest/fastest ATI mobile chip and has shader support to boot.
The Cnet article refers to BestBuy - but as of last night they still didn't show the widescreen 2GHz model at their web site (only the 1.7 and 1.8GHz models w/o widescreen design) - however on Monday afternoon the 2GHz widescreen model finally shows up on their notebooks listing - see this page - the graphics chip is listed as a Nvidia Geforce4 420 Go with 32MB of vram. The article says the notebook was designed by Porsche Design GmbH.

More Feedback on iBook Radeon Mobility Firmware Mods for Dual Display Support
I've updated the page of reader reports on the firmware mod for dual display support on iBook Radeon Mobility chip versions with more reader feedback. One of the latest reports was from a 2002 Radeon Mobility iBook owner that said his system had reboot problems afterwards - the first Radeon Mobility owner to note this problem. (Some older iBook owners noted a severe problem (not booting at all) - not sure what could have happened to cause this.)
Since there have been no reports of it working with other than the Radeon Mobility chip based iBooks (latest models) I do not suggest anyone try it on older iBooks. There's never any assurance these types of mods will work for everyone - safest is just to avoid them.

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
