OS X Stuffit Security Update (7.0)
| I had never updated to Stuffit 7 (deluxe or expander) on my PowerBook G4 with 10.2.1 and today Software Update showed a "Stuffit Expander Security Update (7.0)". A reader that had installed Stuffit Deluxe 7.0 said the update doesn't appear so I suspect this update only appears for those with versions earlier than 7 installed. (I.E. Not a security fix for 7.0 users, but an update for users of older versions. However one reader later wrote that he had installed Expander 7.0 and the update still appeared in 10.2.1.)
"StuffIt Expander 7.0 provides support for advanced StuffItX (.sitx) format
and addresses a potential security issue related to expanding certain .zip archives."
I ran Software Updates on a system with Stuffit 6.x in OS X 10.1.5 and OS 9.2.2 and didn't see this update appear. But you can download Stuffit Expander 7 for some time now at http://www.stuffit.com/expander/download.html.
As a FYI - I ran Repair Disk Permissions after the update and as is typical, changes/corrections were noted.

OS X 10.2/iTunes3 Support file for Yamaha CRW-F1 44x24x44x CDRW Drive
A reader sent a Modified Yamaha Plugin file edited for Yamaha CRW-F1 (44x24x44x) drive support in OS X 10.2.1 and iTunes3. I don't know if the IDE and Firewire version of this drive have the same firmware/Model ID - so it may not work with both. I've added this info/link to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR item's previous info/link to the Jaguar (10.2) plugin file.
Like all 'unofficial' mod. files - they are provided as-is with no warranty or guarantee. (You can't replace the existing file under OS X due to permissions unless you use the terminal to enable root user, or do a get-info on the file to change permissions temporarily, or just reboot into OS 9 and replace the file.)

Reader Comments on Cypress OS X USB Drivers with USB 2.0 Archos Jukebox
Yesterday's news (and FAQ now) had comments and a link to Cypress OS X USB drivers that worked with the Archos Jukebox (and some Que CDRWs). A reader report in the drive database however noted he lost USB 2.0 speeds in Jaguar:
"
This is an update to my earlier report on the Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 USB 2.0
I have lost the USB 2.0 functionality of the drive in OS 10.2. Booting back into 10.1.5, the Jukebox works at USB 2.0 speed.
I'm running the Cypress 1.4j driver (the 1.4j driver is the same as the 1.4 driver for 10.1.5; the difference being the 1.4j has an installer for Jaguar) and the Orange Micro 1.0.7 driver for my USB 2.0 PCI card. Mike W.
"
If any other USB 2.0 users (Que or other USB 2.0 CDRW, or USB 2.0 Archos Jukebox) can comment if they've seen the same thing let me know. (Include system details and USB 2.0 PCI card info also.)

Owner of Newer Tech 'Cooler' Pismo G4/500 Upgrade Notes CPU Reported as 7410
Yesterday's news page here had my comments/questions (and Newer Tech's replies) to their latest press release on up to 20C cooler running Pismo G4/500 upgrades. A reader report added today in the database noted he was told his upgrade is the "cooler" model, but the CPU is reported as a 7410. (That was my first guess but when I asked Newer Tech - they said "nope". What other later G4 CPU chip is pin compatible? )
I've written Rick of Newer Tech to comment on the reader's report. Here' a clip from the cpu database report (note the mention of Hitachi):
" I received a note stating that I received a new low power G4 that would reduce operating temp by as much as 20 degrees. In a telephone conversation w/Newer Tech about the delay in shipment, the person I spoke with mentioned the new CPUs were coming from Hitachi. Perhaps their designation isn't 7410, but that is what is reported by ASP.
Steven K."

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
