| Powerlogix G4/800 Cube Owner Reports on Firmware Update/Cache Enabler |
| (From a Rate Your CPU Upgrade database report today)
(Powerlogix G4/800 in G4 Cube)
"I previously posted a review on this same upgrade on my Cube 3 days ago, and just want to inform everyone I retract my 6 rating - PL e-mailed me the Firmware Update today, and all I can say is- Wow, what a difference w/ the L3 cache!! (now no software required) I will now say I HIGHLY recommend the PL upgrade CPU for the Cube, and I certainly won't regret this. Much snappier in all apps.
Don H."
(I asked Don if he saw the previously common wake from sleep issues I noted in my PL 1GHz Cube revew)
Sorry I neglected the sleep issue problem in the update- hope you can post this-
ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS w/ video coming back from sleep, in thousand or millions of colors (Jaguar X.2.1, Apple 15" studio disply hooked to the Nvidia GeForce 2 card via ADC.(you will still get the "cache problem" warning booting into 9, but who uses that anymore -I only know that because the Firmware has to be loaded in 9) The firmware fixed everything- My ASP shows 2MB L3 cache, (like I couldn't tell w/o looking)
(he later wrote)
Mike-
I gave you the wrong info about the Cache warning when booting into 9- it
must of been just the original reboot into OS9 after running the Firmware
update. I just rebooted into 9 from X.2.x just to make sure, and there was
NO warning- The firmware allows the comp to recognize the L3 as "normal" as
well
Don.
Another Cube owner w/ PL G4/800 sent an email with comments on the firmware update:
"
Mike, here's an update to my PowerLogix 800mhz Cube
Upgrade post... I've reported enough bad news. I'm glad to report some
good news. I purchased an 800mhz PowerLogix Cube
upgrade and had L3 cache problems.
Just received from PowerLogix the flash memory updater
that they just put the finishing touches on.
After a very minor glitch (didn't expect a warning
that I'd have to boot with the programmer switch
enabled...hold it until the power button flashes off
and on quckly for a coule of seconds then let go) I'm
glad to report that after installing the software and
rebooting my L3 cache is FINALLY ENABLED!
You'd be amazed at the difference in performance.
Night and day. (without the cache enabled you typically lose 30% or so in performance-Mike) In fact I'm writing this in Jaguar (OS
10.2) using VirtualPC running Windows 2000 (figured
that is the hardest test of all to pass) and can say
that for the first time I fell like I'm working on a
PC under Jaguar and not using emulation.
I'm still a little nervous because even without the L3
cache my system caved on me a couple of times over the
last week for no apparent reason but...
My initial impression is incredibly positive. I know
that several have followed my posts and have
experienced the same problems so I'll post a follow up
in a few days and a few weeks.
Mike Hill
"
I asked both owners if they has seen any problems with wake from sleep. (Don replied but not Mike yet.)

| Apple's PowerMac G4 Feedback Page - Voice Your Opinions/Experiences |
| (from a reader email)
"
October 7 Apple put a new Powermac G4 mirrored door feedback page
on their website. It would be nice if all of those who found the
powersupplys to be too loud could post their input here for Apple. If
there is enough feedback they could possibly do a revision.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/powermac.html
Lorin M
"
If Apple did revise the fans, design, etc. I doubt there would be any retrofit options for existing owners - *but* feedback like this is important I think - if enough people write with common suggestions or complaints, it may get addressed in the future. (Of course also note what you like about the system as well...)
The Systems page, G4 macs section here has a G4 DDR PS fan replacement article - but of course that voids the warranty, etc. (and the main large fan when it runs at high speed is the major noise-maker.)

| More Comments on Jaguar Cache Cleaner 1.0 |
| Yesterday's news had a problem report from a user of Jaguar Cache Cleaner 1.0 (major problem seen when the app hung during use with palm desktop not quitting). I have not used this utility and have not read other reports at VT or Macupdate, but I posted it as a FYI on what could happen in worst case scenarios. Here's another reader's comments on CC 1.0:
"Hi mike,
Ran Cache Cleaner 1.0 on Mac OS 10.2.1 and PowerBook G4 400 1GB RAM/10GB HD
with no problems what so ever. I followed instructions by quitting all apps, also I quit all process running in the 'login Items' just to be sure...
Hope this helps.

The next day he wrote
Hi Mike,
Just as an after thought... I ran Repair Disk Permissions in the Disk
Utility and go the following:
2002-10-11 02:23:55 +0100 - Repair of privileges has started
Permissions differ on ./System/Library/Caches, should be drwxr-xr-x ,
they are drwxrwxrwx
Owner and group corrected on ./System/Library/Caches
Permissions corrected on ./System/Library/Caches"
The fact the reader yesterday had the app hang in the process I assume is a factor in the problem.
Other comments on this utility and OS X caches were noted in Monday's news (here and here).

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
