| OS X 10.1 Drivers for Epson C40, C60, C80, Photo785, Photo 820 Printers: |
|
A reader sent a note that Epson made good their promise noted here on Oct 5th. Their first in a series of OS X 10.1 driver updates scheduled on their Troubleshooting Tip #0301 page has been posted. I went there and found the links for each of the printers with an update. (The links below are to that printer's download page with the 10/22/2001 OS X 10.1 driver listed).
Note the driver links there dated 10/22 have a "10.0" notation, but I assume that's just not been updated. One reader with a Photo 785 said the new drivers "worked great". (Still waiting for my Photo 870 driver - due Nov 5th.

| OS X ROM Update for VillageTronic Voodoo3 & Banshee Cards: |
|
A reader sent an email that VillageTronic had released OS X drivers for their Voodoo3 and Banshee 3dfx chip based cards. I considered this a shocker, and it looks like it was too good to be true. (No drivers found - only a ROM update.) Their main page today says:
"Village Tronic releases MacOS X compatible drivers for some "classic" products.
Owners of the previous two generations of Village Tronic's graphics cards can now use them in the new MacOS X.
Jump to the download area now !
But their downloads page has no OS X "drivers" that I could find today. The only download with OS X mentioned was a ROM 1.9 firmware update . Note the last sentence in the readme file included with the ROM update. (the "not a new a new" is verbatim from the readme)
"
This application updates the flash ROM of the graphics card to the newest version 1.9, that is compatible with Mac OS X. Note that this is a ROM-upgrade, not a new a new driver-package for the Mac OS.
"
I assume this only allows the cards to run with OS X or fix some other previous issue, not providing any OpenGL or 2D/3D acceleration in OS X.

| OS X vs Classic Ethernet Performance Tests |
"We had some downtime at work and decdided to try some file transfers between two quicksilvers.
Both were 867MHz and one had 128MB stock RAM and the other had 640MB. Both drives are the stock 40GB 5400rpm from Apple. We tried all tests with both 100BT and Gigabit connections (different cables) according to Apple System Profiler. Our test consisted of transfering a 150MB Photoshop file between the root level of the machines.
First, we tried filesharing with both machines booted into OS 9.2.1.
On 100BT it took 1:29 to transfer the file while connected over IP.
On 100BT it took 1:02 to transfer the file whiled connected over Appletalk
With Gig-E it took 1:21 over IP and :56 over AT.
Next we booted both machines into X.1 [10.1] and ran the same tests but only over IP because of the limitations of X.
On 100BT it took :14 and on Gig-E it took a whopping :06 for the same 150MB file!
Lastly we booted one machine back into os 9.2.1 and left the other in X.1.
Again, we could only connect over IP for these tests due to the X limitation.
For 100BT it took :14 and for Gig-E it took :08
Since a lot of our machines here at work are still on OS 8.6 we decided to see what transfer speeds would be like. The one test we did for that was on 10BT and over IP to X.1.
The time to transfer the 150MB file for that was 2:25.
Just passing on the findings. I can't wait until X is implemented in our environment! Eric H.
"
Normally IP has been faster than Appletalk on my simple networks. I've not tested 10.1 Ethernet speeds, but I've not seen near the rated bandwidth from Ethernet in actual file copies in the past. Another reader however noted he had seen similar rates with his network:
"
As for the guy who says he can transfer 150 megs in 14 seconds over
100bT, I believe him Mike.
In my studio, I consistently transfer my 100Mb photoshop test file over
100base T Ethernet in just under 10 seconds. Therefore, I assume I could
transfer 150Mb files in about 14 or 15 seconds.
I use the IP connection to mount my server, and my server is a Mac OSX
Server using a RAID 5 with Maxtor 20 gig drives.
/Bill
Rod of ASTEC wrote to say the Gigabit performance was dissappointing. He sent some test results that I'll be posting later.

| Reader Report on using Griffin's iMic with USB PCI Card: |
"
Hi, I'm the guy who wrote you a couple weeks ago about the
SoundBlaster Live driver conflict on the G3 upgraded PowerTowerPro.
[see the SoundBlaster Comments page for his report-Mike] Well, I wanted to give you an update on my situation.
The whole thing came about because my internal audio on the
motherboard stopped working mysteriously, so I couldn't play my MP3s
anymore. Well, I returned the SoundBlaster Live, and bought an iMic
from Griffin, it converts USB to analog audio, it was designed for
the new Macs that don't have audio in or out ports. The specs for it
say that Apple does not support USB Audio with third USB cards, and
may not work. Well, I have to say that it DOES work, perfectly I
might add, but I am running 9.1, and it probably wouldn't work with
anything before that.
So, all's well that ends well, and I only ended up spending about $40
for the iMic, terrific deal, money well spent. Props to Griffin
Technology
-Anthony-"
For more info on the iMic, see Griffin's product page.

| Reader Notes Loss of Stickies Database after OS X Security Update: |
"
*** WARNING ***
BE CAREFUL when installing Apple's new "security update." Last night I
installed it, and it blew away my Stickies Database file. I had a ton of
customer invoice billing in it, and now it's all gone... I think that
little maneuver cost me a few thousdand dollars (at least I had a
reasonably recent backup of it)
- Adam"
I don't use Stickies personally, but another reader replied to this post noting he had no problems with the update.
Regarding your stickies database being erased by the update story, just
letting you know my stickies are fine and dandy after the update, no
problems here.
