Startup Problems with Firewire Drives Connected? Try this Tip:
A reader sent a long email with a tip on a later OS 9.x Startup Disk Control Panel version that fixed his problem of booting with a Firewire CDRW drive connected and powered up. The OS X 10.1 CD has a later version of the OS 9 Startup Disk Control Panel than even the OS 9.2.1 update. (v9.2.3 vs 9.2.2) He also said it helped with problems he saw restarting from OS 9.x to OS X 10.1. Details.

Tip for Burning Audio CDs with 80Min CDRs in Toast:
" (from a TDK 12/10/32 drive database report today)
"Mike- the drive burns data CDs, both Mac and Hybrid Mac/PC formats, right up to a full 700 MB without a hitch. Roxio is still blowing me off claiming this to be a TDK firmware issue [burning 80min/700MB audio CDs] (and ignoring my reminder that Roxio's web site says that Toast supports this drive model)."

That's from Thomas Bonita's report on his TDK 12X burner in a beige G3.

I am beginning to think Toast may have problems with a number of drives in audio disk-at-once mode. It would be useful to know if Thomas has problems with all audio burns, or just DAO.

This is exactly what happened to me with a Sony 12X drive, installed in a 9600 and hooked up to a VST card. Everything except DAO worked perfectly, using Toast Titanium 5 and 5.0.1. I tried Jam 2.6.2 and had no difficulty burning audio DAO with Jam. I eventually removed the drive and put in a Teac 512EB, which for some reason worked fine in DAO mode (and all others).

I can't pin down what solved the Sony problem, because I changed too many variables at once. I put it the Sony into an ADS Pyro case, hooked it up to a different machine (also a 9600) with an Evergreen FW/USB card, and used it with Toast 5.0.2. I then had no problems burning Disk at Once audio with that drive.

When I see reports of drives making audio coasters, it often seems to happen in DAO mode using Toast. Maybe some of your readers have some ideas about this?
Kathryn Jenkins"

There have been problems with DAO mode in Toast with some CDRW drives (some 12x Teac models especially as I remember, at least with certain firmware versions). If track mode helps with a problem you've seen with DOA Audio CDs in Toast, post a report in the Drive Compat. Database with the details.
(Note - there' s now an option to search the database by OS version also. However there are many reports with OS X comments from readers that selected OS 9.x as their OS version, so search with that option or leaving the OS version blank to see more reports.)

Another Lexmark X83 Owner Report - Using 10.0.4 Lexmark drivers in OS X 10.1
A reader replied to the earlier post from an X83 owner:

" I can print (much to my relief) with no problems to a Lexmark X83 from 10.1 using the driver which is claimed not to work with 10.1.
I haven't tried scanning or using OCR yet.
Joel Kopitz "

I asked Joel to send a note when he tried scanning or faxing. I wish the earlier reader report had noted if he even installed the 10.0.4 Lexmark drivers I noted in Monday's news. (Found by searching Lexmark's site.)

Apple TIL on OS X 10.1 Firewire to Firewire Drive Issues:
One of last night's TIL updates listed here includes one titled Stops Responding During File Transfer Between FireWire Devices where Apple notes file copies between two Firewire devices may cause the system to stop responding (hang). I've added this link to the list of TILs at the bottom of my OS X 10.1 first impressions article.
There were more reports today in the drive database (see list below) on FW hard drive and CDRW problems seen in OS X 10.1. So far this has been the only real negative on OS X 10.1 for most users. (Most of the Firewire CDRW problem reports have been from B&W G3 owners - one noted the CDRW drive worked fine with a PowerBook G4 for instance)

Report on MCE's Expansion Bay DVD/CDRW Combo Drive:
(From one of today's drive database entries)
MCE Expansion bay Combo DVD/CDRW Drive
PowerBook G3 2000
Comments:
"Well, the drive is bootable, plays dvds through os 9 and X (10.1) and is recognized by disc burner and toast both in os 9 and X.

A couple of observations:

Disc burner in os X will only allow 666mb of data on a 703mb disc. The os 9 version identifies the disc properly. Toast on both 9 and X identify the disc properly.

DVDs play properly under os 9 and X. DVD player 3 (in X) required me to select a region code -- the drive ships from MCE uncoded. I would assume you can reset the change counter like any other RPC2 drive. OS 9's player did not require the code to be set.

My drive does not read or write cd-rw media for some reason. It's going back to MCE for replacement. I think it's simply faulty.

The drive is a Toshiba OEM, model #SD-R2002. 4x/4x/24x/6x. Other than the high cost of the drive, i'd have to say i'm pretty happy with it.

Reader Comments on Lexmark X83 All-In-One Printer/Scanner/Fax:
" Hi Mike,
I have been in contact with Lexmark technical support concerning two issues with the new Lexmark X83 printer I purchased last Sunday:
  • 1. The printer is not recognized as USB printer by the USB Printer Sharing software (1.0.1 or 1.0.2) in Mac OS 9.
  • 2. There are no drivers for Mac OS X 10.1

The answers that I received (I am not citing them directly) were as follows:
1. Due to unforeseen development circumstances the printer is not supported on a network?
2. They do not have yet 10.1 drivers, but they claim that the OS X drivers should work?

At this stage I am waiting for their answer on my question if the networking issue is a hardware or a software problem and if it is a hardware issue I am considering to return the printer. If you have information about the networking capabilities of this printer I will appreciate your help?
Thanks!
Grigoriy "

Yesterday's news had a link to a reader's page with lexmark printer drivers/notes and a link to Apple's list of included printer drivers (I did not see any Lexmark printers in that listing.) And I commented in Monday's news that I searched Lexmark's web site for OS X drivers for the X83 and found only one that said it was for OS X 10.0.4 and earlier. (I'm not clear from the above comments if he installed those or not and from Lexmark's comments, they may not work in OS X 10.1.) [Update - See the later news item where another X83 owner said he could print using the 10.0.4 Lexmark drivers.]
However, if any readers have a suggestion for Grigoriy, let me know.
