A 2nd Wavelan PCcard Driver For OS X 10.1
Yesterday's news had a reader report and download link on a new Wavelan PCcard driver for OS X 10.1 that worked on his Powerbook Lombard with Orinoco Silver card. Another reader wrote in reply to that post that he was not able to get those drivers to work with his PB G3/233 with the same Silver card, but noted that Yuriwho, the author of the 10.0.4 compatible drivers has come out with an updated 10.1 compatible driver at homepage.mac.com/yuriwho/.cv/yuriwho/Public/WirelessDriver_10_1.dmg-binhex.hqx which worked. If you have problems with one of the drivers, try the other.

PowerBook Battery Swapping under OS X 10.1
" Mike,
has anyone mentioned battery swapping while asleep in Mac OS 10.1? I tested it out on my G3 FireWire and G4 (work machine). I was able to swap the battery on my G3. I waited too long with the G4, but I think there was enough time to permit a battery swap if I was ready with the second battery. Finally, no longer shutting down in order to swap in a new battery on my G4 powerbook!
-- Ashton"

I have had some questions about battery life in OS X 10.1 (in use and in sleep mode). I've not had time to test this personally, but welcome any reader reports on those that have. (Earlier OS X versions were reported to drain the battery much faster in sleep than did OS 9.)

OS X 10.1 Install Report on 7500 w/G4 CPU Upgrade:
"Hi,
I have a PM 7500 with XLR8 G4/400MHz and Initio-Miles Ultra2 SCSI with 9 gig Cheetah Ultra2 hard drive. Using an earlier version of UnsupportedUtilityX I was able to install Mac OS X 10.0.4 after flashing the Initio-Miles PCI card ROM with version 3.0 and reformatting the drive with Apple's drivers (previously FWB drivers). However, kernel panics prevented use of my Apple 15" digital flat panel monitor with either a 3dfx Voodoo5 or ATI Radeon PCI video cards. I could only use my old 13" Apple CRT monitor with built-in video.

Today I flashed the initio ROM with version 3.04 drivers. I flashed the ATI Radeon PCI card with the ATI 9.01 ROM drivers and ROM Extension. Using the latest UnsupportedUtilityX 2.0b3 I was able to successfully boot into OX 10.0.4 without a hiccup from the ATI card! I then installed OS 10.1 Upgrade without a hitch, albeit slowly (45 min). Now, 10.1 is working smoothly with both the 15" flat panel and 13" CRT monitors simultaneously!
My heartfelt thanks to Ryan Remple, ATI and Initio-Miles!
Bob Dalley"

ATI ROM Update Reports Page Updated:
I've updated the page of reader feedback on the ATI ROM update with more reader reports on the ROM update released Monday
Based on the latest reports, a loss of video out on PCI Radeon cards that were flashed with the update is not common. The page also has comments from ATI on the update and a fix in the works for the loss of Apple monitor software controls after the update.

Positive Report on SoundBlaster Live in Older Macs w/CPU Upgrades:
Yesterday's news had requests for reports and info on several older Macs with CPU upgrades that had problems with the SoundBlaster Live cards. So far I've received only one totally positive report from a pre-G3 series Mac running a SBlive card. Here it is:

" Mike,
I have a SB Live in my Umax s900 with a PowerLogix G3 366/183/1MB OC to 400/200. The card has worked fine for me with both versions 1.3 and 1.4 of PowerLogix software and MacOS 8.6 and 9.1. As others have noted there is a pause during startup right after the SB extension loads. I don't have access to any other mac so I am not sure if this pause is unique to G3 upgraded macs or not.
-Matthew Beerits
PS: Here are more detailed specs to my system just in case it matters:
Umax s900
PowerLogix G3 366/183/1MB OC to 400/200
240 MB RAM
VooDoo 3(in Top Slot)
Wired4DVD(Slot 3)
USB Card(Slot 4)
SB Live(Slot 5)
Just thought of one more thing the card worked fine with VM on and VM off. "

I've added all the recent older Mac/SBlive card reports to the SBlive Comments/Performance page
Just as I finished typing this I spotted an email from Brian of Creative Labs that said:

" I tested the SB LIVE on a 7600 with an xlr8 G3 300 - 1MB BS Cache - 8.6, 9.0 no problems. Unfortuantely, I haven't tested 9.1 or 9.2 since I turned it into a Darwin Box.
