Apple posts Safari 3.2 for OS X Leopard, Tiger and Windows
Safari 3.2 (for OS X Leopard, Tiger and Windows) is available now at http://www.apple.com/safari/download/. (Also appears in software update - but I prefer the download installers.) (Note: I've had many OS X 10.4.11 users report install problems/problems with prebinding failing. I'm not installing this update on any Tiger machines at this point. There's many related threads in Apple's safari forums on problems.)

"About Safari 3.2...
This update is recommended for all Safari users and features protection from fraudulent phishing websites and better identification of online businesses. This update also includes the latest security updates. For detailed information on the security content of this update, please visit this site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 (Apple security updates page)
Mac system Requirements: Any Mac running Security Update 007 (2008-007), OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.5.

Details on security improvements are in this doc About the security content of Safari 3.2.
If you see any pros or cons (including any broken Safari addons), let me know the details. Thanks. (FYI - see Friday's news page posts on other Safari problems including some addon version issues and OS X tiger prebinding failures.)
I installed it from the download updater (quitting all running apps first of course) on this AL iMac (OS X 10.5.5 w/all prev. updates) and have not seen any problems so far (although the only Safari addons I have are Flash). As mentioned above, Safari 3.2 prefs' Security settings has a new item "Warn when visiting a fraudulent website" (checked by default)

However a reader that updated via software update replied Safari 3.2 crashes/quits on launch. No addons he said (my first suspect was a Safari addon, or corrupted prefs) and later replied even the download installer crashes on his Macbook. Another restart attempt failed so he's booting from an OS install disc to run a repair or reinstall (no backup drive apparently). Not sure what went wrong with the SU install but many OS X 10.4.11 users are reporting prebinding failures. (I've since gotten a few more 10.4.11 user mails that ended up doing a OS X restore/reinstall after safari 3.2 update problems.) Although many have use SU OK in the past (as have I), for reasons too long to repeat here I recommend the download installers and for major updates, rebooting the mac first (to ensure as clean a cache/system state as possible as I rarely restart my work system otherwise - just sleep/waking it.) The extra time it takes to download the installer and reboot first is time well spent IMHO - as well as having a (current) backup/drive. But often it takes a bad experience to change habits.

Personally I'd like to see Apple force quit all unnecessary tasks before applying an update (as they did with OS 9.x and before) or force a restart first and then apply it. Ditto for the "repair permissions" mantra - if it's really required/recommended have the installer do it before/after. (OS X is light-years more advanced than OS 9.x, but you could Repair the boot disk from Disk First Aid in OS 9.x (which force quit the Finder first), but still can only verify boot disks in Disk Utility run from the boot drive.)
I've personally rarely have had update problems, but I've spent a good portion of my life the last 8 years on OS X update problems from others, and it pains me to repeatedly see users have problems with software updates. (No matter if they're a small % of the total users, that number could be reduced significantly IMHO.)

And of course having a current backup drive is a must, but often even those with higher end computers, software and other addons don't have a backup drive.

First reader notes on World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King
Don't own the game myself but got this from a reader today:

"Mike, Picked up World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King last night at its midnight launching. As usual Blizzard's DVD is a dual OS disc both for Windows and Mac OS X. My rig is a 24inch iMac 2.8ghz Intel Dual Core 2 with 4 gigs ram and ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro with 256 megs video ram.

The game loads pretty fast due to the fact its on 1 DVD rather then 4 CDs no swapping needed. The game requirements are a little steeper since Blizzard did a partial overhaul of the in game graphics engine, but WoW seems to be playable on a wide range of machines that span the years. They use a new shader model which casts much much better shadows. I encourage everyone to turn that feature on the shadows around the characters are pretty fluid and add more depth to the overall appearance of the game. Flames look a lot better to.

In game performance is slightly better in my opinion. Blizzard stated the game now makes better use of Dual Core processors which previous versions did not. Performance benchmarks on WoW are hard to do since there subject to a lot of factors outside your actual computer i.e mods, broadband quality, number of players around you but I am getting anywhere from 30 FPS in densely populated areas to 70-80 indoors. Either which way very very playable.

I've just started the game and its absolutely beautiful. The artwork is astounding in my opinion. Usually I play with the music off since its pretty repetitive and distracting but this time Blizzard did a good job on the music. It fits the scenes very well. Suggest all turn it on.
-Jon"

More feedback on Parallels Desktop 4.0 Upgrade for Macs
I've added 8 more reader's notes (most upgraded successfully) to the recent page on Parallels 4.0 Upgrade reports and Tips. Several initial reports yesterday noted major problems, although most recent replies indicated they upgraded OK. (I've gotten more mails on v4 today and will add them later tonight or tomorrow morning.)
