| New MacBook Pro owner report on excessive Battery Drain (in Sleep) and Wireless problems |
| From a reader mail last night. If you've seen these problems (or not) with your new MacBook/MacBook pro let me know. (See below for links to Apple forum thread on new MacBook sleep problems and trackpad issues - and Brian's later reply.)
"
These new MBP's aren't without some issues. Battery drain is a serious problem when sleeping/hibernating - my book cannot make it overnight without completely draining the battery, I have calibrated the battery twice and reset the PRAM/SMC, so I'm holding out for a firmware upgrade to fix this, as I believe it's an issue with the power management and the new nVidia chipset.Another issue is wireless connectivity - when running on integrated graphics, once the system starts to warm up, wireless performance goes out the window. I haven't noticed the problem when using the discrete video card, but I don't often enable that. I don't have Real Player installed (which before the recent RealPlayer update was reported to cause wireless issues), the system is pretty much out of the box. I'm running a TIme Capsule router, so it's not a non-apple compatibility problem. I'm currently playing with the settings on the Time Capsule to see if I can't get it to steady out, but I believe it's more a heat/proximity problem on the Macbook than a misconfiguration somewhere (as several other devices have worked on this network without any issue)
(regarding the BTO 128GB SSD drive option. I added this info to yesterday's post on the subject. (It's the same model mentioned in yesterday's news w/link to Samsung SSD page/PDF datasheet.)-Mike)
System Profiler lists the SSD as "Apple SSD SM128" revision "VAM0BA1Q". The drive itself has a Samsung label, with model number listed as "2.5" 128GB MLC SSD".

I wrote Brian to ask if the bottom/case was hot/very warm when he checked it the next morning (i.e. system not staying in sleep mode). And if he had any connected USB (or FW) devices, Expresscards, etc. that could be a factor and to try turning off Airport (and BT) as a test (and no connected devices). I also asked he check his console Log for any wake event messages (like "kernel Wake reason = OHC2" which several new MacBook Pro owners mentioned in an Apple forum thread on Sleep Issues with New MacBook Pro). Although he didn't mention it, the Apple MacBook Pro forum also has the Official *Trackpad Click Not Always Registered* Thread.
FYI - Brian later replied to the questions above:
"The new trackpad is nice, the (lack of a) button throws me off if I think about it or try to look for it, but if I don't think about it it works just like every other trackpad (only with a larger touch surface, and with more gestures).
The case is not warm to the touch after sleeping, and istat shows the internal sensors at near ambient after waking up, so I don't think anything is "running". I don't have any devices connected at all, and bluetooth is already disabled. I'll try disabling WiFi later tonight.
There is nothing in the console log at all between "System Safesleep" (apparently the last log entry prior to going to sleep) and hibernate_page_list_setall start (apparently the first entry when the clamshell is open). The only OHC entries in the log are due to firewire initializing on startup.
Hard to say, I'll see if more testing doesn't help reveal the problem - maybe it was just some isolated incidents.
Regards, Brian" |
