ElGato announces EyeTV 300 and 400 models
ElGato has a press release today on their new EyeTV 300 and EyeTV 400 models of DVB Digital Video Recorders for Macs.
"
... EyeTV 300 for digital satellite television (DVB-S) and EyeTV 400 for digital terrestrial television (DVB-T)
will be available in selected stores in early December for 349 EURO, in
countries where the DVB standard is being supported...
EyeTV 300 and EyeTV 400 play and record digital television in its native
MPEG-2 format, which maintains its high quality when played or
recorded on the Mac. The two products are the first computer peripheral
digital video recorders to utilize FireWire, the gold standard for
high-speed data transfer, making it possible to transfer high-quality
digital television to the Mac.
EyeTV 400 offers an innovative portable television solution, allowing
PowerBook or iBook users to pick up and go while watching or recording their
favorite television programs. Since EyeTV 400 receives digital terrestrial
television via a small portable antenna and is powered through FireWire bus
power, no additional power supply or cables keep users pinned down to one
place.**
System requirements
EyeTV 300 and EyeTV 400 require: A Macintosh computer with minimum PowerPC.
G4 500Mhz or G5 processor and FireWire port; Mac OS X 10.2.8 or higher and
256MB of RAM (512MB recommended); and approximately 2GB of hard disk space
per hour of recorded TV. EyeTV 300 also requires a satellite dish with
digital or universal LNB (not included). EyeTV 400 also requires a digital
terrestrial (DVB-T) antenna (included).
An Internet connection is required to use tvtv, EyeTV's optional electronic
program guide (available in UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France). A
CD/DVD recorder and Roxio's Toast 6 Titanium software are required to create
DVDs or VideoCDs
* EyeTV 400 works where DVB-T is available
** External power supply may be required if additional peripherals draw
FireWire bus power.

Logitech Wireless Mice and 10.3
Update - Several readers replied they also were not using Logitech's software - some recommending the popular USB Overdrive software instead. A few readers said they were using older Logitech drivers (not the latest version) in Panther OK however.
(from a reader email - I use the MX700 here with a Powerbook G4 in 10.3, but never installed the software for it. Giving up some customization features but avoiding any compat. issues.)
"
Hi Mike, Thought I'd share with you the response I got from Logitech on issues
I've been having with both my Logitech Mice. I have the MX700 and the MouseMan Dual Optical on a dual 2GHZ G5. The MX700 becomes unusable after a certain amount of time as the tracking starts to skip and the buttons either stick or don't work at all. The other mouse has the button stick problem but seems to track reliably. I did not have these issues using these devices on a dual 500 G4.
When I contacted Logitech about issues with their 1.11 Driver software, this is the reply I got:
"
Logitech products are currently not supported under Macintosh OS 10.3. Please visit our web site in the future for updated software that may
include support for your application. We apologize for the
inconvenience this may cause you."
I am curious if any other of your readers have been having issues with these devices and if they have work arounds.
Thanks
Mark

Latest reader report/tips on Pixela CaptyDVD and PixeDV
"
Mike,
CaptyDVD bundled with the ADS USB Instant DVD for Mac does not support
authoring SVCDs. However, PixeDV can be configured to SVCD settings
(480 x 480 mpeg 2 at 2.0 or 2.5 mbs) to create files that can be
authored by Toast 6. There is something about the mpeg files created by
PixeDV that Toast 6 says is "incomplete." The fix is the select the video file in PixeDV and choose the "Export to mpeg" option. This
creates separate video and audio files that Toast accepts and easily
encodes to SVCD. The image quality looks very good.
Also, I read on Pixela's site that a new version of CaptyDVD for Mac
was recently released in Japan only. It supports AC-3 encoding and
certainly looks more attractive. Hopefully they plan to release this in
the U.S., possibly through ADS or LaCie.

(If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
