Photoshop Performance tests with 512MB to 8GB of RAM in PowerMac G5
I've posted a page with Photoshop performance tests with 512MB to 8GB of installed RAM in a Dual G5, thanks to OWC's loan of four pairs of their 1GB dimms. (Which I really hate having to return.) Although PhotoShop is limited to 2GB of RAM, there's still some benefit to having more than 2GB of RAM installed, especially if you run other apps in the background. Tests include 20 filter/action script results with 108MB and 192MB images and the same tests with Final Cut Express converting a nearly 2GB QT movie to MPEG4 in the background. I wish I could have included more tests - but there's not enough hours in the day.

OWC updates firmware page for Oxford bridge based Firewire drives
(They had previously posted an update to address the 10.3 issue, but apparently they've now posted an even later firmware version)

" Hi Mike,

Sincerely,
Jamie Dresser

Reader reports on fully functional (incl. special keys) KVM Switches
After some previous reports of problems or lack of full functionality (some special keyboard keys, etc. not functional) with KVM switches from G5 owners (on the G5 USB/Firewire device feedback page), I've had a request to see if any other G5 owners since then have found a KVM switch that is fully functional with a G5. (The reason why the special keys on the Apple keyboard don't work (like the eject key) with some KVM switches is noted in past comments on the linked page above.) More than a dozen readers replied they are using some brands/models that were fully functional (including special keys like eject and volume control). But there were also reports (as in the past) on models that did not support special key functions. See the KVM Switch reports page for feedback/details.

Macromedia notes/tips on Apps Problems with 10.2.8/10.3 Archive and Install/Clean Install
Several readers sent a note that Macromedia has a ServiceNote regarding problems with some of their apps after installing 10.2.8 or 10.3 updates:

" Some applications won't run after upgrading to Macintosh OS X version 10.2.8 or to Panther (version 10.3)

Issue
Some customers who have used the "Archive and Install" or "Erase and Install" features of Macintosh OS X have had problems running some or all of the Macromedia applications that use activation. This includes the applications that are part of Studio MX 2004 and Contribute 2. The most common symptom of this issue is that when you click the application icon in the dock, the icon "bounces" as though it is launching, but it does not launch.

Note: This issue has been reported by customers upgrading to Macintosh OS X version 10.2.8 and to Macintosh OS X version 10.3 (also known as Panther).

Reason
The Archive and Install and Erase and Install processes do not properly transfer activation files used by Macromedia software.

Solution
To fix this issue, delete the /Library/Preferences/Macrovision folder, restart the application, and reactivate the product. If this does not work, reinstall the product and activate it again. The application should then launch as expected. "

More iBook G4 owner comments
Here's the latest reader mail from an owner of a new iBook G4:

" I've had my G4 iBook for 1 week now. I knocks the hell out of my 700 14" G3 iBook - not a quantitative assessment, but my impression anyway.
In short - the new G4 iBook is everything a iBook should be...a stock out of the iBook G4 800/256 handles Panther very nicely - far better than my previous iBook with 10.2

Airport range is excellent in my experience. Three floors away from my D-Link 614+ and I get 80% signal strength minimum, despite a plethora of 2.4 Ghz cordless phones throughout the hose.

Battery life is great too - slightly greater than 4 hours with the airport card on.

My only gripe is the Noisy-Crunchy sound the combo drive makes on start-up or whenever waking from sleep....maybe this is an exception. I'll keep you posted.
Best, William "

I'll add this to the previous page here with detailed iBook G4/800 comments, initial tests and notes on the dual display mod working.

Toast 6.0.3 Updater Download Available (incl Spin Doctor/Motion Pictures updates)
Although as of 6AM Eastern Time the Toast 6 update page download link still hasn't been updated, a reader sent a direct download link to the Toast 6.0.3 updater. (Thanks Ronald.) For 6.0.0 owners this will enable Buffer Underrun Protection (BUP) support for burning DVD-Rs with multi-format DVD recorders like the Pioneer DVR-106, Plextor PX-708A, etc. (see below for reasons why no BUP option when burning DVD+Rs.)
Here's a repeat of the info from Wednesday's news page on the changes:
"Update Toast 6.0 Titanium or later to 6.0.3
November 5, 2003
(compatible with Mac OS 10.2 and higher, OS X v10.3 )
Also includes CD Spin Doctor 2.0.2 and Motion Pictures 1.0.3. Supports: English, French, German, Italian and Japanese.
...You may be required to re-enter your CD Key serial # upon the first launch."

Here's what's changed in 6.0.3 per their Toast 6 revision history page

New and Improved in Toast 6.0.3
Note that there was no Toast 6.0.1 or Toast 6.0.2 updater.

New:

  • Language support for French, German, Italian and Japanese.
  • Summary of number of items and playback duration in Video format.
  • Menu item to Duplicate videos or slideshows in Video format.
  • Audio Master Quality Recording support for Yamaha recorders.

    Improved:

  • Buffer Underrun Prevention option available for combination DVD+R/RW and -R/RW recorders.
  • Video disc format accepts more previously encoded content without attempting or requiring re-encoding.
  • Support for recording application bundles and installer packages.
  • Support for mounting and copying additional 3rd party image formats.
  • Support for copying complex BIN/CUE formats.
  • Selecting different recorders or mounted images for CD/DVD copy source.
  • Recorders connected to USB 2.0 ports now display full USB 2.0 speeds in Recorder setup. Mac OS 10.2.8 or higher is required for USB 2.0 support.
  • Clearer status messages during video disc creation.
  • More accurate disc space required calculations.
  • More accurate progress and time remaining calculations.
  • General performance, stability and launch improvements.

New and Improved in CD Spin Doctor 2.0.2

  • Language support for French, German, Italian and Japanese.
  • Recording and playback support for 24-bit audio input devices.
  • General performance, stability and launch improvements.

New and Improved in Motion Pictures 1.0.3

  • Export as Full Quality DV for iMovie now creates 2 GB file sizes correctly.
  • Note: I'm told the reason why there's no BUP option when burning DVD+R/+RW discs (vs DVD-R/-RW) is due to the "lossless linking" that's a part of the DVD+R/+RW standard. See this article on DVD+R/+RW for more info but here's a clip from the page on Lossless Linking.

" DVD+RW/+R Lossless Linking technology is built within the basic specification of the system. This means that you can stop the writing process at any given point, and then resume the writing of data, or it can replace individual sectors on the disc at any given location. "

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
