| What's new/improved in Toast 6.0.3 Update (and Spin Doctor/Motion Pictures updates) |
For weeks now I've been watching the Roxio's software updates page daily for expected updates to Toast 6 (less hope for a Toast 5 update) to address the lack of BUP support when burning DVDs with multi-format burners like the Pioneer DVR-106 and Plextor PX-708A for instance. (v6.0.1 new full versions added DVD-R BUP (Buffer Underrun Prevention) support as noted here last month.)
Well today there's finally a Toast 6 update page listing a v6.0.3 update, but the download link on the page doesn't do anything (just a link to the same page with an empty # tag.) I wrote a toast contact regarding this problem, and he replied they had just finished the update today and apparently the webpage was posted prematurely.)
"Update Toast 6.0 Titanium or later to 6.0.3
November 5, 2003
(compatible with Mac OS 10.2 and higher, OS X v10.3 )
Also includes CD Spin Doctor 2.0.2 and Motion Pictures 1.0.3.
Supports: English, French, German, Italian and Japanese.
...You may be required to re-enter your CD Key serial # upon the first
launch."
As of appx 5PM Eastern Time the update hasn't appeared at Macupdate or Versiontracker - but will eventually, perhaps by the time you read this. (As of 4AM Friday, Nov. 7th, Macupdate's download link is working.)
Here's a list of what's changed in 6.0.3 per their Toast 6 revision history page
New and Improved in Toast 6.0.3
Note that there was no Toast 6.0.1 or Toast 6.0.2 updater.
New:
Language support for French, German, Italian and Japanese.
Summary of number of items and playback duration in Video format.
Menu item to Duplicate videos or slideshows in Video format.
Audio Master Quality Recording support for Yamaha recorders.
Improved:
Buffer Underrun Prevention option available for combination
DVD+R/RW and -R/RW recorders.
Video disc format accepts more previously encoded content without
attempting or requiring re-encoding.
Support for recording application bundles and installer packages.
Support for mounting and copying additional 3rd party image
formats.
Support for copying complex BIN/CUE formats.
Selecting different recorders or mounted images for CD/DVD copy
source.
Recorders connected to USB 2.0 ports now display full USB 2.0
speeds in Recorder setup. Mac OS 10.2.8 or higher is required for USB 2.0
support.
Clearer status messages during video disc creation.
More accurate disc space required calculations.
More accurate progress and time remaining calculations.
General performance, stability and launch improvements.
New and Improved in CD Spin Doctor 2.0.2
Language support for French, German, Italian and Japanese.
Recording and playback support for 24-bit audio input devices.
General performance, stability and launch improvements.
New and Improved in Motion Pictures 1.0.3
Export as Full Quality DV for iMovie now creates 2 GB file sizes
correctly.
Note: I'm told the reason why there's no BUP option when burning DVD+R/+RW discs (vs DVD-R/-RW) is due to the "lossless linking" that's a part of the DVD+R/+RW standard. See this article on DVD+R/+RW for more info but here's a clip from the page on Lossless Linking.
"
DVD+RW/+R Lossless Linking technology is built within the basic
specification of the system. This means that you can stop the writing
process at any given point, and then resume the writing of data, or it can
replace individual sectors on the disc at any given location.

| Reader report on Initio Firewire800 Bridge issues/Firmware Update |
(Update - FWDepot sent links to their firmware updates -see below this original post)
Although Apple mentioned only the more common Oxford922 chipset (part of the FW/IDE bridge board) in their warning on FW800 drives recently, a reader with a FWDepot case with Initio bridgeboard wrote that he also saw problems, fixed by a firmware update:
"Hey Mike,
Fwdepot has an updater for the Initio 2430 1394b chipset. Last I
checked, it wasn't on their website (not seen there today, only the Oxford firmware update), so you might have to email them.
Before the update, I was experiencing frequent crashes,
disappearing/reappearing files, mounting failures, copy failures, and
finally, hard drive detection failures. The product this bridgeboard
was in was one of those custom cases fwdepot.com makes - basically the case and several bridgeboards to do the IDE to FW 800 translation. The initio 2430 bridgeboard seems to be pretty new, so there may not be many people with it.
(I asked if the problem was only seen under 10.3)
It was only in Panther on a G5 (my only box with FW 800). I only
briefly had a hard drive plugged in with 10.2.8, but I didn't notice
any problems then (and these were very noticable problems), so it seems
to be related to the 10.3 bug."
If you're curious as to which bridge is in your Firewire drive, use Apple System profiler which should show if it's an Oxford or Initio bridge in the case. (For links to recent firmware updates for OWC, wiebetech and Lacie drives, see the FAQ's firewire section or the Oct. 31st news page)
Here's FWdepot's email today with downloads of firmware updates:
"
FireWire Depot has posted both the Oxford 922 and Initio 2430 flash
utilities on their home page. (only the Oxford922 link was there earlier today when I posted the original news item - I personally checked the page. Glad they added the initio updater there-Mike)
Oxford 922
http://www.fwdepot.com/firewiredepot/oxford922/922_updater_Mac.sit
Initio 2430 -
http://fwdepot.com/firewiredepot/initio216/Initio2430216.zip
While all of the problem reports have focused on the Oxford 922 chip, some
users are experiencing some problems with other chips sets as well and the
Initio 2430 utility can be used on the new Initio 2430 1394b chip.
If you are using a 'generic' Oxford or Initio chip, the flash utilities
posted will work. If you are using an Oxford 922 or Initio 2430 chip that
has been modified in firmware by the vendor you purchased the
enclosure/drive from, you will need to get the modified version from the
vendor. Do NOT use the posted utilities as you may damage the bridgeboard
you have.
When using either flash utility, you should first disconnect all FireWire
devices and then connect only one FireWire device to your computer before
using the flash utility.
There are also basic Oxford flash utility instructions posted on the website
at http://www.fwdepot.com/firmware/firmware.html" |

| SoftRAID 3.0.1 update for 10.3/Panther |
| (clip from the press release last night)
"
Panther compatible version of SoftRAID 3 ships
SoftRAID LLC today announced its new Panther compatible
SoftRAID 3, version 3.0.1. Although this release comes right on the heels of the initial 3.0 release, SoftRAID was pleased to be able to incorporate Panther specific features such as support for Case Sensitive HFS+ volumes and the ability to enable or disable Journaling. SoftRAID engineers also added support for displaying disk bay numbers in XServe and PowerMac G5
drive position information in the Disk tiles, to give server administrators more information when monitoring data flow.
Current 3.0 owners have been automatically upgraded by E-mail and should contact the company if they haven't received their free upgrade.

| More PCI Quartz Extreme/Panther feedback w/Tip for DVD playback |
The latest reader feedback on using the mod for Quartz Extreme PCI support (for Radeon PCI cards)
Hi Mike,
I have QE working perfectly on my Yikes G4 now (OS X 10.3). Before I noted that fast
user switching was not working with the cube effect- it turns out some
Norton files needed to deleted. So all Norton users should delete
everything! (anyone else see this problem?-Mike)
I also noted that DVDs would play very choppily. This can be
remedied by going to the "windows" tab of the DVD player preferences and
switching both "floating overlays" off. It notes there that the floating
overlays require QE, and apparently the PCI bus cannot handle it. Yet that
has no effect on how the DVD plays- I can watch it fine at all sizes.
-Nate"
I assume he's using a Radeon PCI or Radeon 7000 PCI card in the 66MHz PCI slot. I've added his comments to the PCI Quartz Extreme feedback page.
