MacBook Pro (Nvidia 8600M) GPU Failures/Repairs/Tips page updated
I've added another report (out of warranty repair covered) to the previous page on Nvidia 8600M GPU/Video Failures/Repairs/Tips. (Ref: Apple's extended GPU warranty for affected MacBook Pro models - If the ext. drive GPU diagnostics test flags it as a qualifying GPU failure...)
If you have a failure that's refused coverage, if possible get a 2nd opinion/retest if there's another apple store/service center within a reasonable distance. (Several readers have noted not giving up after a first refusal was worthwhile - although YMMV.)
The USB drive Diagnostic test requires that the MBP is bootable of course. One reader that had a repair refused (system would not boot - only a startup chime/restart repeatedly) said getting a local repair shop to reflow the GPU to motherboard solder joints fixed it - at a fraction of the cost of a logic board swap.

Hands-on: Steam for Mac beta versus Windows
Electronista has posted an article with notes and screenshots of OS X Portal and TF2 in their Hands-on: Steam for Mac beta versus Windows. (I hadn't checked since Saturday but today noticed updates to Mac Stream client, TF2 and Portal.)
The public release of Steam client for OS X is only 2 days away (May 12th).

QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for OS X v10.6.3
I opted to install QT 7 player when installing OS X Snow Leopard originally, and as I mentioned in the earlier this year, after I installed the 10.6.3 Combo update my QT 6 player version was updated to v7.6.6. (I mentioned that again when QT 7.6.6 was released for OS X 10.5.8 on March 30th.) Maybe this is for anyone that didn't opt to install QT 7 in 10.6 earlier. Anyway, here's links/info from an Apple support/DL page today:

"QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for OS X v10.6.3
QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files on Snow Leopard. It also accepts QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes, which turn on QuickTime Pro functions.
QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
For more information, see: Installing QT Player 7 on OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard"
