Apple DVD Player 4.6 update for Tiger
I missed it earlier today but below the Pro Apps and Intermediate Codec updates (see below) at Apple's support/downloads page is a May 10th dated DVD Player 4.6 for Tiger although as of 6:30 PM eastern, it's not showing up in Software updates here in Tiger.

DVD Player 4.6 delivers added support for DVD Studio Pro 4 authored HD DVDs. It is recommended for all users of DVD Player.
Key Updates include:
  • Additional support for playing DSP 4 authored HD DVD folders from DVD discs and hard drives.
  • Additional support of discs with both SD and DSP 4 authored HD content.
  • Improved Global Player settings.
  • Improved usage for last play and disc info dialogs.
  • Requirements listed are Mac OS X 10.4 or later, a G3, G4 or G5 CPU (G5 required for HD playback) and 256MB (or more) of RAM. There's also a linked readme file:

    Before Installing the Software
Make sure you do the following before you install the software:
Turn off any security software that you may have installed on your computer.
Turn off any virus-protection software that you may have installed on your computer.
Upgrade Mac OS X and QuickTime, if necessary."

Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0.1 and Pro Apps Support 3.0 Updates released
Matthew called with a heads-up on the Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0.1 update. (Also available at this apple support/downloads page.) Here's the info from the SU window

Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0.1 update. (740KB) delivers improved compatibility and reliability for Final Cut Express HD and iLife '05 users. It is recommended for all users of Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0 who are using QuickTime 7. Key updates include:
  • Improved export performance
  • Improved playback
  • I then ran Software Update on the G5 which had Pro apps installed (FCP 4.5, etc.) and a Pro Apps 3.0 Update also appeared. (Note - Apple has download pages for a OS X 10.4 version and a 10.3.9 version of the update.)

    Pro Applications Support 3.0 (3.6MB)
This update improves general user interface reliability for Apple's professional applications. It is recommended for all users of:
  • DVD Studio Pro
  • Final Cut Pro
  • Logic Pro
  • Logic Express
  • Motion
  • Sountrack
  • I selected both updates on the G5 running 10.4.0 and after applying the codec update it 'unexpectedly quit' before finishing the Pro apps update. I selected "reopen" from the error dialog box and it rescanned and showed the Pro Apps update again and this time it installed. (I'm going to reboot from the 2nd HD w/10.3.9 and run SU under that OS also later today.)

First feedback on Diskwarrior 3.0.3 (update for Tiger)
" Downloaded the Diskwarrior Tiger updater (v3.0.3 - see this alsoft page for info/links-Mike) and it updated my original CD perfectly. (the 3.0.3 updater creates a writeable image of the original 3.0.1/3.0.2 CD for updating/burning to a new CD.-Mike) Booted from the CD and ran it on my G4 IMac that has a dirty upgrade to Tiger.

Had previously run the Tiger Applejack 1.4.1 utility and Diskwarrior 3.03 found 6 files that had a directory entry with a incorrect text encoding value that Applejack missed. (but to be fair, Applejack does a lot of things that DiskWarrior can't.-Mike)

Replaced directory and rebooted, seemed to boot faster. Life is good and I think you need both utilities. Always ran both before Tiger upgrade and will continue that scheme.
    -Daniel "

Matthew left a message here that the update worked ok on 2 of 3 systems - saying that his DW 3.0 CD original CD didn't have some system files needed to boot on his recent iBook G4 (I'm assuming an older OS ver. on the CD) although it worked fine on his Pismo and iBook G3. He used FW Target disk mode to run DW on the iBook G4. (See the Alsoft support page linked above for how to check your DW 3 CD version. I mentioned he could probably use BootCD to make an updated OS Diskwarrior CD, as was done with TTPro CDs.)
I've updated to v3.0.3 using my original DW 3.0.2 CD (w/10.3.7 OS on it) image and it works OK on this 2003 G5. I bought that DW 3.0.2 CD a couple of weeks ago and found I have to boot from it using the Option key, as the C key doesn't seem to work for booting from it on this G5.
(FYI - The April 29th news page here had Tips on using DW 3.0.2 with Tiger.)

    LightWave 3D 8.3 update
Interesting note from MU's page on the LightWave 3D 8.3 updater:

"Version 8.3 offers full support of the new generation multi-core processor systems, enhanced vector blur routines and improved integration with other production tools via updated PSD support. Also included are a new gradient option for HyperVoxels (LightWaveÌs volumetric rendering system), improved text tools for Modeler, and new features and functions in the Scene Editor and Dope Track "

ATI is working on a hotfix/patch for the problems some X800 owners have seen in LW under Tiger reported on the X800 feedback page here. (Some readers are testing this now.)

Toast 6.1 and Jam 6.0.3 updates
Missed this last night but MU lists Toast Titanium Updater X 6.1 with a long list of changes including some Tiger specific fixes and a note that caught my eye:

    (clip from the changes list)
    Audio:
  • Following discussions with Apple, this version will no longer allow customers to create audio CDs, audio DVDs, or export audio to their hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content."...
  • I remember one of the past Quicktime 6 updates last year broke the ability to convert protected AAC files when I used a previous version of Toast, but I hadn't tried it since then (but from the comments I assume they fixed that in a later update but now have removed that capability).
BTW - As I usually do with updates, keep a copy of the previous version just in case....

There's also a Jam 6.0.3 update with a similar note. (shorter list of changes so I'm listing them here)

    " What's New:
Includes all previous Jam 6 updates and:
  • Following discussions with Apple, this version will no longer allow customers to create audio CDs or export audio to their hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content.
  • Resolves an issue where certain ISRC codes could not be entered.
  • Resolves an issue where Jam fails to launch when audio output is set to 96 kHz.
  • Resolves an issue with images failing to be mounted or unmounted on Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)"

LaCie LightScribe Labeler 1.0.1 Update (adds Tiger support)
For owners of Lacie's "Lightscribe" (Philips OEM drive IIRC) yesterday they posted a LaCie LightScribe Labeler 1.0.1 Update:

" The LaCie LightScribe Labeler Updater 1.0.1 updates the application for compatibility with Mac OS X, 10.4, Tiger. The original application must be installed first, if not already installed. Restart, then run the Updater application to update to v1.0.1 "

    AppleJack 1.4.1 Update (OS X repair/troubleshooting tool)
There's a 1.4.1 update listed at MU today (v1.4.0 from 5/6 added tiger support)

      " AppleJack 1.4.1
    • fixed deep cache cleaning under Tiger to respect the new cache file names for launch services and user icons.
    • improved the disk repair routine messaging, and implemented a limit for how many times disk repair is repeated on an irreparably damaged disk in auto mode.
    • expanded some of the preference file checking to include .xml file extensions as well as the old (deprecated, but still in use) /var/db/SystemConfiguration directory.
    • removed 'SystemStarter start Disks' from the setup sequence of AppleJack for people running Tiger. Evidently, it's not necessary anymore.

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.2 or later, including 10.4."
I've added this to the Applejack user reports page.

Tiger user tip on iSync 2.0 (merge vs erase phone and merge)
(I don't own a bluetooth enabled phone but posting as a FYI. Updated with a 2nd reader report on this below)

" I just fresh installed Tiger (new drive) and went to sync my nokia 3650. To my horror, it automatically erased my phone memory and I lost all my information. I thought I was backing it up to the computer. I guess not. This was bad because I had maybe 200+ numbers and other personal data.
I am just writing so you could let readers know to open the pull down menu and merge data (not erase phone then merge - default) if they want to dump their phone in the mac on a clean install.
    Thanks Barrett "

Another reader replied to this post that he also was "bitten" by this:

" I had the same problem with iSync 2.0 and my Sony Ericsson phone. I lost all my contacts, notes, tasks, everything. Huge problem, never happened with Panther
    Chao, saludos,
    -Oscar S. "

    Pioneer DVR-108 firmware 1.20
Jim sent a link to a Pioneer AU page with DVR-108 v1.20 firmware (page dated 5/4, but firmware download dated April 28th). Also as usual there's different downloads for the OEM and XL/retail model. (The download there is a ZIP file but unpacks to a (PC) EXE so usually Stuffit expander v8 or later on the Mac used to uncompress it to get the firmware file for use with Flashkit 2.0.) There's no info at that AU page on the 1.20 changes so I checked the Pioneer japan page linked here in the FAQ and past news posts and the version info page there has this listed for 1.20 :

    " Support New 8x DVD-R Media
    (8x writing FNSD/TCL) "

BTW: As I mentioned in the post earlier this week on the 1.50 firmware for the DVR-109, a reader with a DVR-108 drive running Tiger said after he updated to v1.20 firmware, although ASP in Tiger still showed the drive as burn supported, trying to burn a disc resulted in an error message the drive was unsupported. (Not sure why, since normally unless the drive ID is changed burn support doesn't key on firmware versions. I asked if he had tried clearing the caches, etc. but he'd already reflashed back to 1.18 firmware.) Today 2 tiger users with 108 drives said they flashed to 1.20 and it's working fine in Tiger. (One in FW case, one internal.)
FYI - the Pioneer japan page also links to a page titled In case of update failure that has info on recovery methods (for PC users however). Some readers that had flash updates interrupted/failed (resulting in unusable drive) used a PC to force flash the drive firmware.

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
