| Tunes 4.0.1 Update available - Improvements but disables Internet Music Library Sharing |
| iTunes 4.0.1 is available via software update. Here's a clip from the SU panel on the changes. (Note the mention of music sharing only between computers on a local network/same subnet. I don't personally share libraries over the Net but just a FYI.)
"
iTunes 4.0.1 includes a number of performance and network access enhancements, and only allows music sharing between computers using iTunes 4.0.1 or later on a local network (in the same subnet).
If you have an Apple SuperDrive, you can archive your song files to a DVD disc as well as burn playlists to standard audio CDs to play in your car or home stereo.
"
Some have noted improved AAC audio playback quality after the update, if you have let me know. (I was offline a few hours today so thanks to Lars, JMac and Jamie for the heads up mails on this.)

| Carbon Copy Cloner v2.2, PSU Blast Image Config 1.0.2 |
| Macupdate lists v2.2 of the popular OS X disk cloning/backup utility Carbon Copy Cloner:
"
Version 2.2 adds the following:
Overhauled the documentation -- Fixed all bugs associated with Help
CCC should now properly clone volumes on which OpenAFS is installed
Fixed problems downloading psync. Now downloads the latest version of psync
CCC is now more conservative in creating a disk image with the "Prepare for
Apple Software Restore" option. Instead of creating a disk image whose
capacity is equal to the capacity of the source drive, it sets the capacity
to the amount of data on the source drive. In a case where you only used 2GB
of an 80GB drive, you can now restore that image to drives smaller than
80GB. The target drives should only need to be large enough to fit the data
of your master installation.
Fixed some lingering problems with how CCC was handling items in /private.
Fixed a problem in which an AppleScript error would occur in the Scheduler window if the user had created a task without a name
Requirements :
Mac OS X 10.2 or later with the BSD subsystem installed (which is installed by default).
"
The CCC home page still lists v2.1.6 but the downloaded file is v2.2.
For OS 10.1.2 thru 10.1.5 users, the CCC home page has a link to download version 1.3.1.
Speaking of cloning utilities, MU today also lists something I haven't tried PSU Blast Image Config 1.0.2 that has cloning and other features.
"Penn State University's Blast Image Config ("BIC") is an application
intended for Macintosh system administrators who want to:
- Quickly clone/restore a Mac OS X system disk image to a Macintosh's boot hard disk (via Apple's asr command line tool)
- Automatically set the Open Firmware boot security mode and password
- Prevent users booting with another volume (CD, DVD, FireWire Hard Disk) without supplying a password
- Prevent users from entering "Single User Mode", which gives "root" access to the Mac
- Change the network settings on the restored HD, if configured to do so
- Set the Open Firmware boot device to the restored disk
This tool is intended to automate the build process as much as possible. We use BIC here at PSU to do the initial install of the base OS and applications on all of our lab and kiosk Macs.
Requirements : Mac OS X 10.1 or later.
The Home page for this utility is
http://clc.its.psu.edu/Labs/Mac/Resources/.

| OS 10.2.6 Burn Support File for HP 300n DVD+R/+RW Drive |
Philip sent a modified HP device-plugin edited for OS X 10.2.6/iTunes and Diskcopy burn support for the HP 300n DVD+R/+RW drive. (iDVD doesn't work with external drives though, and I'm not sure iDVD would work even with internal DVD+R/+RW drives and a modified plugin. For mac users, the better supported DVD-R/-RW drives are a better choice than DVD+R/+RW models.)
As always, these files replace the original file of the same name (long path to the device-plugin file in OS X - use sherlock to find it. Use the terminal as root (for Jag enable root user in Netinfo manager - see this Apple kbase doc on how. Best to not leave root user enabled however) to replace existing file in OS X - or reboot to OS 9 to overwrite the existing file). These files are provided "as-is", and may not work flawlessly with all systems/configurations. I've added this info/download to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for future reference.

| Latest Comments from PB G3 Wallstreet owner on Mplayer DVD player |
| (from a reader email)
"
It was great reading your article Non-Apple OS X DVD Players (from May 2002) regarding playing DVDs on legacy Macs. I just purchased a Sonnet G4 500Mhz upgrade for my PowerBook Wallstreet and the added processor speed doesn't help playing DVDs without the support of the DVD PC card. (Apple DVD option for Wallstreets had a PCcard + DVD ROM drive. Only supported in pre-OS X using the Apple DVD Player 1.x, DVD player v2.x and 3.x for OS 9/OS X don't use the hardware mpeg cards and require a Rage128 or better graphics chip/card.-Mike) My readings indicate that Apple is not supporting the DVD PC card but since the Pismo has an on-board decoder chip, this is the earliest model supported. (Actually the Pismo (PB G3 2000/firewire) has a Rage128 graphics chip which is supported by the 2.x/3x Apple DVD player in OS 9/X - it does not have a separate MPEG/decoder chip like the Lombard G3/400 model did.-Mike) Since the Wallstreet has the best of both worlds, that's unfortunate. My Wallstreet currently has a G4 processor, 802.11b wireless networking, Mac OS X Jaguar, USB, Firewire and all the previous benefits of SCSI and ADB!
In continuing the discussion regarding playing DVD's, MPlayerOSX does work on my current configuration, but since the decoding is only handled through the processor, major dropping of frames is experienced. Even with the window displayed at half size. I'm not able to rip the VIDEO_TS folder from DVDs and for some unknown reason using DVDBackup and VideoLAN tries hard but cannot keep up. If you hear of any further development and/or backward engineering, I would appreciate being on your mailing list. I'm not giving up on my Wallstreet. I still think it's the best designed PowerBook ever...

Form Space Texture"
I'd try reducing color depth to 16bit (thousands colors) which seems to be the best aid for older graphics chips in OS X. Note - I'm not sure if Darren has the RageLT (RageII) equipped first model Wallstreet or the RageProLT Wallstreet2 model (G3 233 w/512KB L2 cache/266MHz or 300MHz models), but if a WS2 model he might want to read the previous article here on OS X RagePro driver loading tips. (This won't enable Apple DVD player support of course, but has been reported to help performance with RagePro chip based systems (Beige G3 rev B or later, iMac rev B-D, PB G3 lombard, etc..) I've not updated that older page on non-Apple DVD player for some time (just impossible to keep up with all the mail/reports here). I keep hoping that one day someone (3rd party or less likely, Apple) will release an OS X driver/support for the wallstreet
MPEG decoder PCcard (original Apple kit). None of the Apple players in OS X
to date have any support for the hardware decoders (Wallstreet PCcard option, Lombard G3/400 onboard chip, or B&W G3/Yikes Rage128 Piggyback card) and require a Rage128 or better graphics chip (older Powerbooks have RageII/RageProLT graphics chips that can't be upgraded).

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
