FYI/Warning on Nvidia 196.75 WHQL Windows Drivers:
Posting a warning to any readers that installed the Nvidia 196.75 WHQL drivers for windows. (Released March 2nd, they were still linked there as of appx 10PM Eastern tonight but as of 11:30PM they were pulled.) If you did install them, I'd remove them ASAP and revert back to the previous version. The 196.75 drivers are reported to have fan control bugs (static fan speed?) that have caused overheating during 3D gaming. (Some have claimed their GPUs were damaged from overheating with these drivers.) Here's a quote from Blizzard:

"We're getting reports where users are getting intermittent low FPS after installing these drivers. It seems that it is related to the fan control included in these drivers not working correctly and is causing the video card to overheat on 3D applications. This will affect Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 Beta. Please uninstall the drivers and revert back to the older ones.

Mac Mini/HDTV user notes/tips on Display Gamma Tweaks/Utilities
    (from a reader mail)

"Subject: New software solution to an old problem
Mike, I wrote to you 3 or 4 years ago about the muddy blacks I was getting when connecting a Mac Mini to a Toshiba HDTV via DVI-HDMI adapter. One of your readers pointed out the difference in gamma space between PC and TV (0-255 and 16-235 respectively) which was the root cause of the problem. I then used Gamma Control to dial up the Mac Mini's black to 16 and its white down to 235 which solved the problem.

I was browsing the Plex forum and discovered that the author of Gamma Control has created a preference item to solve this problem more simply in his newer product, Black Light: http://michelf.com.nyud.net/projects/black-light/
The Plex forum reveals that even the newest Mac Mini with the Displayport-HDMI adapter still does not deal with this automatically. So Gamma Control or Black Light is still needed.
    Thought you'd like to know.
    - Paul"

Whenever this subject (display gamma, washed out LCDs, etc.) comes up I'm reminded of a (shareware) utility I used in the past (added to the FAQ years ago) - SuperCal visual display calibrator. (I'm no graphics pro but liked its interface and visual feedback over creating custom Colorsync profiles using OS X's builtin util.)
