MacBook Inferno (battery fire)
It's a 3 day old thread so maybe it's old news, but a reader sent a link to a Mactalk AU forum post titled "MacBook Inferno" with pictures of a MacBook whose battery caught fire. If you have a Macbook (or Pro) it might be worth checking the battery for any visible swelling (and verify it comes out of the case easily), any excessive heat, etc. You might also want to disconnect the AC adapter before going to bed (or leaving it unattended) after seeing that story, regardless of how rare this problem may be. He said the MacBook was purchased in late June 2006. (Last year there were some MacBook/Pros that had batteries swell/burst open and some recalls of specific battery models, both Mac and PC. There were also some articles on Dell notebooks catching fire IIRC.)

OWC offering Blu-Ray Burners from $559.99
I didn't get a PR mail on these but Eddie sent a note that OWC has a selection of internal and external Blu-Ray drives from $559.99 and up. (Same Matshita (Panasonic) SW-5582 drive as the $699 (w/Toast 8) MCE internal kit a reader commented on in the Feb 14th news.)

Rex, an Apple compatible IR Remote that stores in MacBook Pro Expresscard slot
SiK, Inc. today announced the release of Rex, a Front Row compatible infrared remote control that can be stored in the ExpressCard/34 slot of the Apple MacBook Pro. It lists for $25.95. (I saw a remote like this the other day that fit in an expresscard slot but can't recall where now... when in the expresscard slot it recharged the remote's battery IIRC)

Logic user Tip for 10.4.9 Audio Unit Validation problems w/Universal Plugins on PPC Systems
Yesterday's news has some comments on Audio Unit Validation problems with UB plugins on PPC Systems. (A reader with Waves SSL bundle V1.1 (Univ. Binary) on his G5 said after the 10.4.9 update it was no longer validated.) A Logic user wrote with a tip:

"I had the same problem in Logic Pro so I ran the Logic AU manager (in Logic preferences) and in the Logic AU manager window I was able to check (turn on ) the non-working plug-ins. You still get a incompatible message but you just click OK and they all show up and they work !! Hope this helps.
Regards, Rob B."

I sent a copy of the above to "Juno" (the Waves plugin user) and he said that he used that tip to 'sorta enable them' so to speak - and that the Waves support page now has a warning on this:

" Mac OS 10.4.9 is not supported and causes Waves plug-ins to malfunction.
Do not install Mac OS 10.4.9 until further notice"

Sonnet PodFreq from $13.95
(from site sponsor OWC)

" Sonnet PodFreq for as low as $13.95!
We've got a decent supply, although still limited - of Sonnet PodFreqs for way below original retail.
The Sonnet PodFreq is an iPod cradle for the car providing an FM Transmitter and charger in one. Originally retailing for $99, at which thousands sold, we've got some of them for a fraction of that original price:
PodFreq for iPod mini (all models) now $15.95
PodFreq for iPod Nano (1st Gen only) now $13.95
While they last
UPS Ground from $2.95, Air delivery within the US for $7.95 or less. "

At that price, I'm going to get one of these for a relative with a 1st gen Nano.

10.4.9 Update Reports/Tips page updated
I've updated the page of reader reports/tips on 10.4.9 again. Today's updates include a lot of reports from those that had problems.
(And BTW - not to preach on this but remember HAVING A BOOTABLE BACKUP of your current drive is worth the cost of an external FW/USB case and drive if your time and data is worth anything at all. And especially important to do before an OS X version update. I see tons of people send much more $$$ on other devices, addons, software, etc. and yet won't spend the money (or time) to keep a current backup. But at times I have also been guilty of not taking the time to backup every work system.)

Main Menu and Toast 8 Updates
"Mainmenu (system maint. menu) now at 1.7.1 with 10.4.9 support.
Also, Toast has released update to 8.0.1 which one of the IMPORTANT fixes is that my designers can now have helvetica dfont disabled by font manager without Toast 8 crashing on launch. (you have to have registered email with Roxio to get the update)
-Ed "

I missed this yesterday but here's the Roxio page with Toast Titanium X 8.0.1 and their version history page has a list of change notes.

Reader article on using Wii remote with Macs/PCs
(from a reader mail)
"Using the Wii remote with your Mac
I've written up an extensive article on using the Wii remote on PCs and Macs. Darwiin v0.5 and Remote Buddy 1.4 are tested. My experiences with various media applications and (attempts) at gaming are noted.
