| More info/tips on Multi-Person iChat problems |
| (in reply to a reader post in Friday's news)
"I can give you a little more info on the iChat multiway chat issue:
(reader suggestion in Friday's news:)
" We experienced similar problems here. The solution apparently was to set a bandwidth limit in QuickTime's preference pane (i.e. a value different from 'Automatic' in the 'Streaming Speed' popup menu).Hope it helps.
-Ivan G. "
Yep, this is the solution, but it only works in 10.4.3 and later.
If you start iChat from the command line with logging cranked up, you can see what is happening:
/Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
iChat tries to contact the Apple Bandwidth server on a nonstandard port in order to estimate whether you have the bandwidth to handle multichat. If that fails -- typically because your firewall disallowed the connection -- it used to (10.4- 10.4.2) simply disable multiway chat. Since 10.4.3, they changed it to default to your Quicktime bandwidth settings. I remember there being something flaky where it sets the limit on multichat participants _higher_ if you choose T1 than if you choose Intranet -- I don't know if they have fixed that yet.
Hope this helps, -Darrell" |

| CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 7 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,647 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- IDE LG GSA-4166b in (MDD) Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.4)
- IDE Pioneer DVR-K06 in iMac G5 (OS X 10.4)
(noted it won't mount or burn CDs - perhaps a laser failure)
- IDE Pioneer DVR-K06 in PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.4)
(although Tiger has basic iApps burn support for most drives without it, he noted using Patchburn 4.)
- IDE Pioneer DVR-109 in G4/AGP (OS X 10.4)
(Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)
- Firewire (cased) Sony DRU 710A used w/Mac Mini (OS X 10.4)
DVD-R + DVD RAM Drives:
- Firewire (cased) ASUS DRW-1608P2S used w/iBook G4 (OS X 10.3)
(Listed under "Other" brand. Used Toast for burning but for OS X 10.3.x iApps burn support you'd need to install a Patchburn 3 profile. Some other DVD-RAM compatible drive reports are also under the "DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives" category)
DVD-ROM Drives:
- IDE Plextor PX-130A in (sawtooth) G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
