Amazon $35 rebate on Tiger
Bob sent a note that Amazon.com lists OS X Tiger for $94.99 after a $35 mail in rebate. (Not available for pre-order yet though.)
Update: as of 3/24/2005 (Thursday) the rebate/pricing info on that page has been removed. However Alastair sent a link to another Amazon page that lists the rebate although no way to order Tiger there yet. (Hopefully this page won't be changed.) Here's a link to the rebate JPG image that lists $35 off Tiger single user and $50 off the family pack. (Notes must be be purchased by 05/31/2005, postmarked by 7/1/2005.)

Posting of Hidden Apple movie on Quadra 660/840AV system Discs
" Hi. It appears that an little known Macintosh easter egg movie has found its way onto the web. The movie was hidden on the Quadra 660av and 840av System 7.1 disk. It shows the Quadra team toasting in front of a pirate flag, a prototype motherboard, and comments from team members. You can read more about the movie and download it from here:

They have links to the original 91MB version and a 10MB QT/MPEG4 version there.

Apple posts doc on Mac Mini Dim Analog Video
"Mike,
Interesting to note that Apple, today, locked the "Mac mini VGA output very dark..." thread on their mini discussion forum, in the Displays area.
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@185.zHbDapCxTV8.170410@.68a43e3b

About the same time they posted this as a sticky post at the top of the discussions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301055
It covers the obvious things (including connections) and then suggests that Display CalibratorAssistant will help, as though it can do anything other than fiddle w/ color temp, gamma, etc. The DCA does not have a "increase VGA voltage to VESA levels" option, sadly. At the end of the doc, Apple indicates that the machine can be brought in for evaluation, but we don't see any reason to believe that Apple has fixed this problem in current minis, as they do not acknowledge a dimness problem. Highly disturbing.
-BP "

Some Mini owners with certain VGA displays said they didn't see the problem (although many have). A few Mini/VGA Monitor users said calibration helped (gamma adjustments perhaps) and some mentioned connections not tight, different adapters/fit, etc. but my feeling is that some monitors are just less sensitive to it (higher gain perhaps? - If all Minis have the lower analog video level mentioned by CT Magazine in their Mini review tests.) I've added this to the previous page of Mac Mini/Analog Video Display reports. One of the recent posts there had notes on underclocking the onboard ATI graphics chip using ATIcellerator II and said it seemed to help (he noted DVI problems at higher resolutions).

Report on new Belkin F5D7011 802.11g PCCard (Airport 3.x compatible)
" I read some of your posts regarding the Belkin Wireless G Notebook Network Card (802.11g PCMCIA PC-Card). I also went through a hassle with these cards because I had purchased Part# F5D7010 which did not work with Airport on the Powerbook G3 (Bronze SCSI). I spoke with Belkin tech support who told me that they have a new one that will work with Airport: Part# F5D7011. (Airport 3.x works with most broadcom chip based adapters, but vendors often change chipsets frequently.-Mike)
They even offered to swap it for the one I purchased. I received the newer one and it worked without a hitch.
Shawn "

I've added this to the FAQ's Networking section item on Airport 3.x compatible PCI/PCcard adapters.

More on G5 Drive Failures
(In reply to a Dual 2.5GHz owner report on repeated drive failures in yesterday's news)

" Hi Mike.
I have a rev A dual 2 GHz G5 purchased in October 2003. I had a persistent problem with SATA drive bay B. I have used four different hard drives, three Seagate 120s and one Maxtor 250. With each of these drives I would get intermittent write errors after the computer was awakened from sleep. By the time I got to my fourth drive, I knew that this was not a drive problem. Two of the four drives had generated S.M.A.R.T. failure messages, which TechTool Pro 4 said were "sector reallocation" errors.
After getting beyond the initial AppleCare phone support tech to someone with a higher level of training, it was felt that I had a bad channel B SATA controller on my motherboard.
Fortunately, I have a ProCare card and my local Apple Store had a motherboard in stock. I was back in business the next day and have not had an issue with drive bay B since.
Steve S. "

Back in the fall of 2003 when the first G5 towers shipped there were some reports on drive failures that blamed drive heat and some readers relocated their drive bay temperature sensor. A later firmware update (5.1.4) to the 2003 G5s seemed to increase (slightly) the fan speed of the drive section of the case in my 2003 G5 (although some disagreed with that.)

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 6 new reports added this morning. (Entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,448 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
