| Review of ElGato TV Wonder USB 2.0 /Notes on Miglia EvolutionTV (w/hardware encoder) |
(Updated - see below for notes on Miglia's Evolution TV which has hardware MPEG encoding)
"
Dear Mike,
I doubt the EyeTV Wonder will work with a USB 2.0 PC card. The
EyeTV 1.7.1 software for EyeTV Wonder USB 2.0 installs special
USB 2.0 updates to the Mac 10.3.8 OS as it will not run properly
without updating its USB 2.0. It's doubtful that a 3rd party card
would work properly. (I reminded him that there are USB 2.0 PCcards/PCI cards that are natively supported in 10.3.x - those using the NEC chipset for instance - for example the Sumvision 4-port USB2 PCMCIA card mentioned in yesterday's news. How well they perform is another matter however. In fact, my onboard USB 2.0 G5 and PB G4 have less than stellar USB 2.0 performance - about half the performance of their FW400 ports in tests with the same FW400/USB 2.0 cased hard drive.-Mike)
There has also been alot of speculation about using the EyeTV
Wonder with a Mac mini and I would not advise that either. AMUG
has just posted a detailed review of the EyeTV Wonder for those
interested in it's features (including a mini section) at:
http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/eyetv/
Those that try to use the EyeTV Wonder with a single processor
Macintosh including the Mac mini will find that the ATI Wonder
hardware places all the work on your Mac. Trying to record a
Standard (120DVD) MPEG2 file took 80% of the Mac mini's processor.
Most PowerBook and iBook users will find the EyeTV Wonder
requires more CPU than they have for recording MPEG2. In our
tests this makes the USB 2.0 PC card question moot unless all
the user wants to do is watch TV. The AMUG review goes into
detail on CPU usage for those interested. I hope this helps.

Michael Bean

(Update - see Wednesday's news page which has a report from a G4 tower owner using EyeTV USB Wonder with a USB 2.0 PCI card.) Unfortunately there's no hardware MPEG encoder in the TV Wonder, as Elgato TV wonder USB 2.0 page says:
"it makes full use of the USB 2.0 bus standard to transfer raw, uncompressed video directly to your Mac, delivering superior quality TV....
The compression, which is necessary for the record mode, takes place on the Mac."
BTW - a reader sent a reminder on Miglia's Evolution TV (I'd fogotten it was mentioned in last Thursday's news)
"
Mike
Just as a follow up to those worried about the performance penalties of
using the Elgato TV Wonder USB 2.0.
Miglia are soon to be releasing the EvolutionTV, which should put much less
stress on the host system as the video is compressed onboard the device.
Quite remarkably it offers direct compression into MPEG2/4 or divx. This is
a welcome direction to see a hardware TV capture product going, specially
something that you want to run a lot of the time you are on the machine
without a great performance penalty.
However I am a little perplexed by the requirement of USB 2.0 quoted for
this device, since the bandwidth required for the compressed video should be
quite low.

| Anyone using an EyeTV USB Wonder with a USB 2.0 PCcard? |
A PB G4 1GHz (no onboard USB 2.0 ports) owner asked I post a request to see if anyone has used the ElGato EyeTV USB 2.0 Wonder with a USB 2.0 PCcard. ElGato doesn't officially support it with other than onboard USB 2.0 ports (saying it may or may not work well enough with those). If any Powerbook owners have used the EyeTV USB Wonder with a USB 2.0 PCcard, let me know the details. Thanks.
(Update - see later news item above for review of the EyeTV USB 2.0 Wonder, noting high CPU usage due to compression being done by the Mac's CPU. See Wednesday's news page which has a report from a G4 tower owner using EyeTV USB Wonder with a USB 2.0 PCI card.)

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,370 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)

| Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated |
| The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 2 new reports this morning (entries today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 9,823. Here's a summary of the reports added (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):
- Giga Designs Dual G4 1.4GHz (at 1.3GHz) in (sawtooth) G4/AGP (rated 9)
- Giga Designs Dual G4 1.3GHz in (Digital Audio) G4/AGP (rated 10)
(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)
(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand).
