| First feedback on EyeTV 1.7.1 (from EyeTV 500 user) |
| Here's the first feedback on the
EyeTV 1.7.1 Update mentioned in yesterday's news. He also includes comments on the question posed earlier today on using an ATI -TV- Wonder w/ElGato's EyeTV software.
"
Mike, if the ATI USB All in Wonder Box is anything like the Plextor USB box that El Gato markets as well, in order for the EyeTV software to work with a "PC" version of the ATI box it will require a serial number to be input. This is presumably so that people won't do expressly what you mentioned and just buy the PC version for cheap, and download the EyeTV software and use it for free. The problem with this, is that you know within a short time, a serial number is bound to start floating around on the internet and make
this a moot point.
Anyway, on to my experiences with the 1.7.1 update... With the 1.7 release, I was unable export clips from recordings with the EyeTV 500. The editing process worked as normal, but attempting an export (usually to MPEG-2 Program Stream) was noticeably slower than it was with 1.6.7. Plus, when the status indicator reached the end of the export process, it would just "hang" and never complete. This left an incomplete movie as well, and the only way to stop the hang was to force quit the software. So, I have been using 1.6.7 to export, until now. With 1.7.1, it appears exporting speed and reliability
have returned, as I did not have any problems with my testing last night.
Also, it appears the MPEG-4 component that is installed with 1.7.1 fixes the
bug the component had with the version from 1.7. With the version from 1.7, MPEG-4 part 2 movies started with a green screen when played back from QT, and most often would not recover, resulting in very distorted video. With the 1.7.1 version, MPEG-4 movies play fine. I did try the Export to iMovie HD option as well last night, and unfortunately I experienced the same "hanging" problem as mentioned above with exporting MPEG-2 Program Streams
in 1.7. Oh well, maybe in the next release. This will be a nice feature
though when it works properly (if it is indeed intended for the EyeTV 500).

| G5 Bluetooth Antenna Connector Info/Source for BTO Parts |
"
Mike,
CGNUSA sells Apple service parts to the public. I upgraded my G5 to include onboard Bluetooth by ordering the Module and Antenna from them. They have just about any repair and replacement part you would need for any Mac at a reasonable price. I also just purchased a replacement G5 2.0 Ghz CPU from them to repair a G5 I picked up cheap on a clearance rack.

Many Apple dealers will order parts for you although many do not advertise that fact. Info from an earlier reader mail:
"bluetooth mystery connector solved
in reading reader reports on different sites regarding the bluetooth
antenna connector type on the G5 desktop it still appears to be
speculation. I can now confirm the connector on the G5 back panel is
an MCX male and the antenna is a MCX female. I have a dual G5 that I ordered without bluetooth.
I was able to find a dealer that sold me
the module and easily snapped it in with the internal antenna connector attached. Unfortunately this gives only a range of about 3 feet reliably, not useful in the end. The correct antenna is only supplied if you BTO the bluetooth. I found a broken cell phone antenna would fit the center pin hole but only added another 2 feet.
I recently found a 10 inch cable with a MCX female connector at both ends. I plugged one end into the Bluetooth jack on the back of the G5 and attached the Apple supplied Airport antenna (even though I did not order Airport and don't need they seem to supply this antenna) I now get about 50 feet easy. Without the Airport antenna the reception is an easy 20 feet. This also establishes that the Airport jack on the back panel is an MCX female and the Airport antenna is a MCX male.
Price was $10 plus $6 shipping for *2* cables on eBay through Ridge
Equipment, http://www.ridgeequipment.com. Actually, you can just call them and they will be glad o ship it right out, got mine in 2 days. Hope this helps someone in the same boat, and thanks for the great site.

| Anyone used ATI TV Wonder with ElGato TV Wonder Software? (updated) |
| (from a reader mail yesterday in reply to the ElGato EyeTV 1.7.1 update change notes)
"
Now that we have the software v1.7.1 update from Elgato that supports the EyeTV Wonder USB 2.0 hardware (that just might be the ATI box without hardware/firmware changes), has anyone tried this new software with an ATI branded ATI Wonder USB 2.0?
The ATI box is often less expensive with rebates than the Elgato box.
Thanks in advance!
"
If anyone tries the PC TV Wonder with the ElGato software, let me know as several readers have asked about this. (One later reader post suspected the software may require a S/N.) At first I confused the ATI Remote Wonder with the ATI TV Wonder (my bad...) Here's a post from Bruno of ATI on the 2 products:
"
Mike, the recent EyeTV postings are very confusing. In part because there are a few products being mashed together. What ElGato has out is software for TV WONDER USB 2.0 - it has nothing to do with Remote Wonder. It's an external, USB2.0 capture device. On the Mac side it's being sold by ElGato who have created a driver for it to work specifically with their EyeTV software.

ATI does have OS X drivers for the Remote Wonder but not the TV Wonder.

| More Mac Mini owner reports on Analog Video (Adapter fit notes) |
| I've updated the page on Mac Mini analog video with a reader mail noting someone in an apple forum post said his DVI/VGA adapter wasn't fitting properly and trimming some pins resulted in better quality video.
"I was just reading the apple discussion thread about the dim video problems and one user said that he discovered that his vga adapter wouldn't seat properly in the dvi connector on the mini due to the pins on the dvi side of the adapter not fitting properly. He said he solved this by trimming the pins on the adapter's dvi side resulting in a good connection of the analog vga pins and better video quality.
Perhaps if this is the root of the dark video problem then all that is needed is a slight adjustment to the positioning of the dvi connector on the back of the mini to make it easier to seat the pins on the vga side...
Here is a link to the .
apple forum postings.
-Anthony M."
I wish this was the root cause, but I'd be surprised if all the adapters used had a fit/connection problem (some used apple's and other adapters).
However if anyone else notices something similar with their adapter, let me know.
Not everyone complained about dim or low-contrast analog (VGA) video, although many that wrote did. Thanks to those that also included their exact monitor brand/model info as some monitors seem better about this than others according to reports.

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,342 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)
CDRW Drives
- IDE Plextor 52x24x52x in Beige G3 (OS 9.2)
(using toast for burning, no itunes burn support. some problems noted.Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers Beige G3 MT model)
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives
- Firewire (cased) Pioneer DVR-109 used w/G5 Tower (OS X 10.3)
(no Apple iApps burn support as of 10.3.8, so suggested using Patchburn 3.)
- IDE Sony DW-D22A in G5 Tower (OS X 10.3)
(Using Patchburn 3 for iApps burn support.)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
