Trailblazer Browser for Panther
James sent a link to an unusual browser called TrailBlazer at http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/macwarriors/projects/trailblazer/. Here's a clip from the linked page:

" TrailBlazer solves the problem of getting back to a web page you've been to before, but didn't have the forethought to bookmark. The current solutions provided by most web browsers, their history menu, is just a list of titles and web addresses which aren't memorable enough to be useful.
The actual solution used by most people, is to retrace their own steps through different links until they find they page they are looking for. Our software solution provides the user with a graphical representation of the steps they took from page to page, such that they can simply click to their final destination page.
TrailBlazer was developed by MacWarriors and released at the University of Illinois' Engineering Open House 2004. "

The page includes an intro video and notes Trailblazer requires 10.3/Panther.

Path Finder 3.2 Public Beta
I don't use this software but here's a clip from their PR today:

" Cocoatech has taken the wraps off of a new beta version of their professional file manager software, Path Finder, now at version 3.2. This eagerly awaited version contains many frequently user-requested new features, including integrated CD burning, completely rewritten fast file search that leverages new OS 10.3 technologies, a brand new "Connect to Server" window, integrated screen capture capabilities, and tons of interface refinements and overall improvements.
For a more complete list of changes, please see the official beta site: http://www.cocoatech.com/beta32/ "

More feedback on Techtool Pro 4.0.2 CD
I've updated the page of TechTool Pro 4 feedback with another report of problems running from CD (4.0.2 CD user). As before Micromat says problems running from CD are due to no Virtual Memory, athough the latest problem report was from a user with over 1GB of RAM. I asked if he had problems creating an Edrive from the 4.0.2 CD, but he's too leery to try it. (The first 4.0.2 CD user said he had problems creating an Edrive - I didn't with v4.0.1.) Update - Another 4.0.2 CD owner wrote tonight that he had no problems creating an Edrive with v4.0.2.

More EyeHome owner reports - later software won't play AAC/ITMS Files
I updated the page of EyeHome reader reports with the latest owner feedback, including comments that the later EyeHome software will not play back iTunes Music Store/AAC files. (They are listed but will not play.) Early reports from EyeHome users said they worked despite the fact that ElGato's FAQ said they were not compatible.

" Mike, ... Just a Little eyehome FYI
Nice product, that needs a few more features enabled to make it a real killer 5 star product.
But here is the skinny
the original eyehome 1.0 application did not support Music Libraries over 2000 songs, So they began a beta test seeding of version 1.01b3, which fixed the problem. When they released the final version 1.01 it had fixed the large library issue, but now it more longer allow you to play Itunes protected AAC songs. Although these songs would show up in the list, the eyehome would choke on them and fail back to the main menu.

The latest GM version 1.02 also no longer plays AAC Itunes, and also no longer even shows M4p tracks in the play list/ Elgato says they will try to add this back in future versions of the eyehome software..
So buyer beware.
also, lastly .. if you have any strangely named folders ( e.g.. anything with a Tilde or an accent mark) any tracks in these folders seem to cause the eyehome to choke also, renaming the folders without these characters seemed to fix the problem.
Bruce M. "

I wrote Adam Steinberg of ElGato for confirmation on this but he's not replied yet. However today I also received another EyeHome owner's report that confirmed the above, saying even his own converted AAC files would not play. (See the linked page for his full report.)

NOTE: I've not been able to verify this (no EyeHome here personally) but I've been told that the latest EyeHome firmware can play non-protected AAC files with the latest software (but not iTunes music store AAC files, which may not even appear in the listing).

I ran an OWC loaner G4/533 at 600MHz in my B&W G3 (with stock heatsink) for comparisons used in the early 2003 review of the Powerlogix G3/800 ZIF upgrade. (Review includes apps/game tests comparing the stock G3/350 vs various G3s up to 800MHz and G4s up to 600MHz.)
Note: - Several readers asked how a G4/7410 at 600MHz would compare to Sonnet's 1GHz ZIF and Jamie at OWC sent a link to a table of test results at
http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Framework.cfm?page=/Benchmarks/shootout/zif/zif_shootout03_04.html. (Includes B&W G3 and Beige G3 tests)

Reader reports LOTR Return of the King in some CompUSA stores now
Yesterday's news note on Aspyr's latest newsletter mentioned LOTR: Return of the King game was shipping and would be in stores by Apr. 2nd. A reader replied to that post last night saying a Florida CompUSA store he works at already has gotten some:

" i work in a Compusa store in florida.
we received 5 copies of the new lord of the rings game for mac, and yes they are on dvd.
    Chris "

(BTW: I've added LOTR Return of the King (and other upcoming titles) to the Game Reviews db listing and for any readers that buy it, please post a game review Thanks.) That surprised me as I can't even find the mac version listed at compusa.com (as of today, Wednesday morning).
I personally would prefer a DVD instead of several CDs. The Mac version of Unreal Tournament 2004 also notes a DVD drive is required so it must come on DVD also. (PC UT2004 versions were on CD except for the special edition DVD package w/bundled headset - those were very rare here at local stores like Best Buy and sold out the first day they arrived as they only received a very few copies and had them on sale for $29.xx at the same time.)

EyeTV 200 Owner Reports page updated
I've updated the page of EyeTV owner reports with another EyeTV 200 (firewire) model user's comments. One of the most common complaints is the intermittent loss of signal but the latest report said he hasn't been able to get it working at all yet. (Hopefully ElGato can address this in a future software or firmware update, but based on the reports so far, it seems like it was shipped before it was really ready for prime time.)

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 9 new reports added (reader entries from Tuesday; entries today are added the next newsday morning. Entries w/missing info/no comments are not posted). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 12,801 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

      CDRW Drives:
    • SCSI Yamaha CDRW4264 (4x2x6x) in 9600 (OS 8.1)
      (problems noted even with toast)
    • IDE Maddog (boxed) 52x32x52x in B&W G3 (OS X)
(listed under other brands, using patchburn 1.1 for 10.2.8 burn support. I'd suggest buying a natively supported liteon LTR-52327S drive instead since they are cheap now and you know what you're getting)

      Combo DVD-CDR Drives:
    • IDE OWC mercury combo drive in G4 Cube (OS X 10.3)
(listed under 'other' brands, didn't note actual drive mechanism brand/model)

      DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
    • Firewire cased LG GSA-4081B used w/iBook 2001 (OS X 10.3)
(no native burn support, using Patchburn II for Panther burn support but said 10.3.3 update broke that. Not sure why)
    • IDE Pioneer DVR-107D (aka A07) in B&W G3 (OS X 10.3)
      (native burn support in 10.3.3)
    • IDE Pioneer DVR-107D (aka A07) in Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
    • IDE Pioneer DVR-107D (aka A07) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
    • IDE Pioneer DVR-107D (aka A07) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(FYI - Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)

      Hard Drives:
    • IDE Western Digital 120GB in G4 Cube (OS X 10.3)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
