| iTunes/Disc Burner Mod File for Que Teac 12/10/32 Drive: |
A reader's entry in the Drive Compatibility Database noted he'd found a modified support file that added support in iTunes/Disc Burner for the Teac 12/10/32x mechanism equipped Madlogix Firewire drive. (Also works with Que 12/10/32 Firewire CDRWs that use the Teac drive). He noted the file was available here (direct download link). Todd later wrote that he only burned at 8x rates but I asked if he had tested using the "max" rate setting. (He noted using 8x as it was the fastest speed under "max" but didn't say if he had tried the "max" setting, which might be 12x ). There were other issues with some Teac based Que 12/10/32 drives noted in the database here, which were reportedly solved by later firmware updates (which are PC updaters unfortunately).

| Reader Comments on iTunes/Toast Errors with 320K MP3 Files: |
| A reader replied to a Drive Compatibility Database report here with a note on iTunes and Toast errors buring 320KBs MP3 files. He also notes a mounting tip for the Sony CRX-140 in Beige G3s:
"
Mike,
A recent posting by Mike Wolfe in the Drive Compatibility Database
reports problems getting -7932 errors when attempting to burn CD-Rs using iTunes with the Sony CRX140E installed in his Beige G3.
My testing reveals that iTunes suffers from the same problems that
Toast 4.1.2 has, namely, generating errors when attempting to burn
MP3s that were ripped at a 320K bitrate. My bet is that Mike is
attempting to burn some 320K MP3s and the errors are happening when
iTunes gets to those files.
Also, if Mike inserts a bit of folded cardboard above the CRX140E
at the right corner (between the top of the drive and the chassis),
this will force down the drive just enough to perfectly clear the
bezel. Works like a charm and you can't see the cardboard with the
bezel in place.
... I will also post my own Drive Compatibility report,
now that my 140E has been installed for a week or so.
Mark"
I've added Mark's tips as comments to Mike's database entries.

| Comments on Backups Using Disc Burner (Modification Dates) |
| A reader noted that he liked Disc Burner, but that files on burned CDs show a modification date of the day of the burn, which is not desired for file backups.
"
Mike,
I don't think I have read any other reports, but my brother and I both have
this problem. When using Disc Burner on 2 separate, but similar systems (B&W
350 rev b with Sony 12x8x32 CDRW), Any files burned receive a Modification
date of the burn date. Not good when you catalog your disc and need to go
back and search the most recent files. Anyone else having this problems. The
only other feature I would like for Disc Burner to have is the ability to
burn multiple copies of the same image. We back up 2 CDs at once for off
site storage. I guess all in all Disc Burner was not meant as a replacement
for toast. I do like it for quick burns, though.
Thanks,
Mark Neal "

| Airport 1.3 Adds PPPoE and DHCP Client ID Support: |
| Airport 1.3 adds Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) and DHCP client ID support. (Does this mean it will work with AOL now?) A reader sent comments about the update:
"
Noticed that Airport 1.3 is out tonight 3/5/01, downloaded it and
installed it. Everything was updated in less than 3 minutes. The
update recognized my EnterNet settings for PPPoE and is beautifully
allowing my home network on the 'Net over DSL through the Airport Base
Station. Problems with Timbuktu over TCP/IP are gone and everything is
very quick. Two matters of note though, my WaveLAN card is now
recognized as an AirPort PC Card (with icon on the desktop) and there
appears to be no way to disconnect the DSL through the control strip as
you can do with the modem connection other than through an inactivity
setting through the Airport Admin Utility program. All in all very
slick. Another reason Apple programming is the best!
Gene Melchionne"

| G4/733 Owner's UT Performance: |
| Jeremy Hansen sent results of tests in Unreal Tournament Wicked400 demo with this G4/733 and GeForce2MX. (I've added results of my tests at 1024x768 max settings with a G4/500 DP AGP system (100Mhz bus/2X AGP) with GeForce2MX card for comparison) |
"Also posted on the BBS:
**********************
UT Results
**********************
Ok, finally got UT results. This is with VM off, reduced extensions,
filesharing off.
All tests performed with medium textures, decals off, dynamic lighting
on, 0 min for framerate setting, and reduced Gore unless otherwise noted.
Numbers listed are average framerate.
Single G4/733 with nVidia GeForce2MX card.
..............................RAVE......OpenGL
----------------------------------------------
800x600x16bit.................30.74.....32.41
800x600x32bit.................27.28.....32.25
1024x768x16bit................27.97.....31.43
1024x768x32bit................21.96.....31.53
1024x768x32bit(MAX)...........17.42.....21.62
(my results with a G4/500 AGP w/GeForce2MX card
this is a 100Mhz bus system w/2X AGP-Mike)
1024x768x32bit(MAX)...........13.74.....17.67
(MAX) result is for maximum settings - high textures, decals on, lighting on, normal gore.A lot of texture swapping was obvious while watching the
demo play (as seen by momentary pauses.)
So the OpenGL is faster overall for average framerates. So what about my earlier statement about one being faster under one condition, the other faster under another? Well, if you look at minimum framerates (which I
was doing at the time), that is a true statement. I prefer to look at
minimum framerates because I want to know how bad it can get. However I
have posted average here because the standard measuring stick is average
numbers and I don't want to start mixing up numbers and confusing things
even more. Jeremy"
Last week Jeremy sent his first G4/733 performance notes which touched off a flurry of posts in the forums here on lower than expected Applications (iMovie, Photoshop, Cinema 4D) performance (not just benchmarks). |
