| ATI 4870 Mouse Tracking issues revisited/FYI on Eizo CG 243w display firmware update/fix |
While trying to catch up on mails came across one from a reader (Pierre) from earlier this week on this topic. (Still an issue for some.) I remember this first came up last year, including a long apple forum thread titled Ati 4870 Monitor/Mouse problem. I've been using a GTX-285 in an 09 mac pro w/single Samsung 24in LCD display and never noticed this problem. I had used an ATI 4870 before doing the GTX-285 review in early June 2009 and honestly didn't notice it at that time either. (I've not reinstalled the 4870 since June 2009 however.)
Anyway, rather than repeat Pierre's mail here (per his sig, he's using a 4870 w/two Acer 24in LCDs) - you can see it in the next to the last post on page 7 of the thread.
And in case any other owners of an Eizo CG 243w missed it earlier, that same page has notes from owners that a display firmware update from Eizo seems to have solved the problem. (2 posts from owners of that display said it did.) Here's a copy of a post there from earlier this month :
"Dear Group:
I am pleased to say that after nine months of effort, the mouse jump problem has been solved for the 4870 to Eizo CG 243w connection. It turned out to be a firmware error within the monitor. Eizo has released new firmware that is installed by the user with their CG 243w, available from technical support. The designation is DP ME10-076.zip for the patch file. Once downloaded and expanded, it has to be installed via USB with a PC! XP, Vista 7
I have a late model Mac Pro with the 4870 card, running 10.6.3, and with the 1.16 firmware I am mouse jump free connected solely via mini-displayport to displayport using an adapter cable.
And that concludes the loooooooooooooooooooong nightmare!
Pete"
Another Eizo 243W owner replied the update also solved his problem.

| DIY G5 LCS Leak repairs |
Earlier this week when I added another dozen reports to the G5 Coolant Leak/Repairs page (unlike many earlier reports in the last 2 years, most now noting they were not offered free repairs), Bill S. asked that I repost a link to his PowerMac G5 Coolant Leak Repair/Overhaul from Oct. 2009 since it's now far down that long page. In response to some reader requests I've also asked if he could expand that article into more of a step-by-step guide as many owners are not clear on how to remove the heatsinks, refill the coolant properly, etc.
Unfortunately as shown in some example photos on the leaks page, many (most?) owners don't notice a leak until it's already done major damage. (Extensive corrosion, damage to power supply, logic board, etc.) Unless you could find used spare parts at a good price, the cost (at std apple parts prices - if you could find stock) would not be worthwhile if major component damage has happened. And a used Air-Cooled G5 tower may be less than the repair parts cost.
(FYI - Here's a link to ifixit's G5 Take Apart guide w/info and photos (appears like those from the G5 service manual PDF) on removing the heatsinks and CPU module.)
