240GB Mercury Extreme Pro SSD in testing
I recently received a review loaner 240GB Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and am currently using it in a Mac Pro. (I may also try it in my early 09 MBP.) As noted in earlier reviews of these sandforce-based SSDs, performance of course is excellent. (Kona2 Disk sweep showed appx 230MB/sec read and writes in bay2 of a Mac Pro, some other tests showing appx 250MB/sec R/W - a bit less than the rated max but still impressive.)
I intend to 'beat on it' for a couple weeks as reliability is paramount to me. (A bit gun-shy after owning a Barefoot-based SSD last year and going through several firmware updates to fix various issues.) I don't expect that sort of experience with this SSD but want to use it heavily before posting a review. These SSDs are famous for holding their performance over time as well.

It had been more than 6 months since I'd used an SSD and had forgotten what a difference these make - as some others have mentioned it's like having a new machine.... apps literally pop open.

MacBook Pro (Nvidia 8600M) GPU Failures/Repairs/Tips page updated
I've added 6 more reports to the previous page on Nvidia 8600M GPU/Video Failures/Repairs/Tips. (Ref: Apple's extended GPU warranty for affected MacBook Pro models - If the ext. drive GPU diagnostics test flags it as a qualifying GPU failure... see page for notes/tips and reminders to have a 2nd test done elsewhere if refused initially. For cases where the MBP will not power up, try the tip on leaving it powered/on for awhile... although nothing is a sure thing in those cases.)
