| Latest MacBook Pro user reports on Repairs |
"
I ordered a 2.0Ghz MacBook Pro the day they were announced. I've had the same issues as many others: heat, screen whine and battery issues. I sent it in last week to apple and they fixed it nicely.
They replaced the Battery, Screen Inverter, motherboard and speaker
assembly.
As far as the heat is concerned, my machine was very hot. The small
metal area above speakers would get so hot that I couldn't touch it
for more than a few seconds. Since the repairs the machine is
noticeably cooler and I can use it on my bare legs now without it
burning me or being uncomfortable.

I got my MBP 1.0 15inch with 120gb drive and 2gb ram, I have been running Parallels VM with XP Pro and the MBP runs so hot that you can burn your left wrist on the wrist support, the bottom of the MBP between the hinges
also gets too hot to touch, the power brick also runs too hot to touch. So I visited with a Mac Genius at the Salt Lake Apple store and he confirmed that this was out of spec and to call Apple Care to get the machine fixed. The first call to Apple Care was a disappointment, the agent told me that MBP a portable computer and not a laptop and was not designed to be placed in your lap and it runs very hot and I should NOT return it for service. I hung up the phone and called back and got another agent who said that the other agent who said the first agent was WRONG and he processed the return for service. That was last Wednesday 10 days ago, the MBP was shipped to Apple care and it arrived Last Friday (one week ago) I received an email said that unit was defective and they were awaiting parts to repair it... no more news from Apple Care! This has not been a great experience with the MBP to date. More to come.

| Another Low-Cost USB Audio dongle (Audio out and Mic input) |
| Another report on low-cost USB/Audio interfaces:
"
Subject: Yet another low-cost USB audio dongle (in Germany) with stereo-out and mic-in
Hi Mike! Just wanted to let you know of another low-cost USB audio dongle (I bought in a store in Germany for 12.99 Euros) that works on a Mac (OS X.4.6 on a G4 Mac Mini).
It works without any drivers having to be installed - and despite the fact, that Mac compatibility is not even mentioned by Speed-Link. (many USB Audio interfaces have basic support in Core Audio with OS X 10.3.x and later, although all features of the device may not be supported without addon drivers-Mike)
The Dongle named "Speed-Link SL-8850 Ultra Portable Audio Card USB" has a line-out (stereo) as well as a mic-in (mono) 3.5 mmm connector. Other than the previously on xlr8yourmac.com mentioned Soundmax SD-102, the sampling-rate can be set to 44.1 or 48 kHz.
Obviously, the dongle utilizes a chip from C-Media Electronics
(http://www.cmedia.com.tw/) - "C-Media USB Headphone Set" shows as a
selectable input or output-source in Apples' Audio MIDI Setup utility.
The quality of the sound out- an input is quite okay for the price
and size. Haven't heard any klicks or unusual distortions with it yet!
Bye, Torge"

Settimio Perlini sent a link to an article on the Miglia Harmony Express that uses the same chipset, but has a mic mute button he said.

| EyeHome 1.8 Update (Universal Binary) |
| Eddie sent a note that ElGato has posted an EyeHome 1.8 Update. Info from the v1.8 readme (rtf)
"
EyeHome 1.8 is a Universal system preference pane. It requires a Macintosh computer with PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster), PowerPC G5 or Intel Core processor, and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later. We recommend Mac OS X 10.4.6 with all software and security updates installed.
What's new in EyeHome 1.8?
- Universal Binary support for Intel based Macintosh computers.
- iLife Ã06 support.
A note on alias support
EyeHome 1.8 no longer supports using aliases to play back content on other drives. If you need to play back content from other hard drives, create a symbolic link in your Movies, Music, or Pictures folder that points to the destination folder on the other drive. For more detailed instructions on how to do this, check out the following FAQ entry at http://faq.elgato.com/index.php/faq/more/404/"
