| 48GB Travelstar PowerBook Drives Available: |
Transintl.com sent word they are now offering the largest notebook drive ever - the IBM 48GB Travelstar. It's listed on their PowerBook upgrades page for $549. [As of 2PM today they said the drives are in stock, but not sure how many they have.] See their press release for more details on the drive and links to their online HD/RAM install guides. (There are also PB wallstreet and PB Firewire drive install guides here.) For those that missed the past news items on the new Travelstar, it's a 12.5mm high drive (fits Powerbook G3 series to PowerBook G4, but too tall for the iBook models), spins at 5400 rpm and has a 2MB cache. The drive is said to be the quietest notebook drive ever, with fluid bearings and according to the original press release, a special sound absorbing housing. The IBM Travelstar 48GB product page has more details.

| iDVD and (retail) SuperDrive Problem Report: |
| Yesterday's news post about a G4/500 owner that installed a retail Pioneer DVR-A03 drive sparked a lot of emails about iDVD compatibility, etc. (see yesterday's news linked below). Another reader wrote that he's seen some problems burning DVD discs with the retail drive and iDVD, but noted these might also happen with the OEM drive:
I began a [iDVD] project
yesterday. I was able to put all my files in that I would like to see
on a DVD. I clicked on the burn DVD button and iDVD saw that I had a
DVD R installed, because it opened the drive slot and asked me to input
the media that I wanted to burn. I put a blank DVD in, and it started
the rendering process. About 20 minutes later I came back to see that
it had given me an error -100001. I went to Apple's website and looked
under the different message boards for iDVD, and it looks like this
error is a common error. There were some suggestions about turning off
different extensions and Appletalk, file sharing etc. I also read that
there has also been some problems with the way the movie files were
saved, and copy protection embedded that would also give this error. I
have not had a chance to try these fixed, hopefully I will have a chance
tonight to give it a try. But from everything that I have seen on my
machine iDVD should work.
"
If any owners of the OEM SuperDrive has seen this error in iDVD, or has a tip, let me know.

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive Compatibility Database Updates: |
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 6 new entries added this morning. The database has reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 3,945 reports. [BTW - the drive database is not a place to post questions, it's for reports on drives you've used. For guides to drive installs, see the IDE, SCI or Firewire articles linked above and/or the FAQ. If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
