2006 Mac Pro Quad-Core CPU Upgrades
Had another reader ask about upgrading his 2006 (first gen) Mac Pro with quad-core CPUs. (X53xx series CPUs - later Xeons like the 5400 and 5500 series are not compatible.) He'd found some X5355's (didn't mention price) but asked about faster CPUs that would work. I sent a link to last summer's 2006 Mac Pro Clovertown (Quad core) CPU Swaps Revisited that includes a link to a reader's X5365 (3GHz) report, as well as links to upgrade guides and a reminder about considering the total cost of upgrades (vs selling/buying a used/refurb later model with faster CPUs, PCIe 2.0, etc).
I did some quick searches (not extensive) for current pricing on 5365s and the lowest I found was at fleabay - best price $599 each. (Other listings were $600+ and up.) As mentioned in some past reports here, some readers have gotten lucky and found working used CPUs at a good price (and IIRC, one reader bought a used server and swapped its CPUs into his mac pro and then put the original dual-core Xeons in the server and re-sold it), but I don't know of any sources for used 5365s currently.

Feedback on FMPro 11.0.2 update Spotlight Tip
(I wasn't sure how many others might run into that problem, but at least two other readers did)

"Re: Strange FMPro 11.0.2 upgrade problem (reader report)
I was in apparently the same situation as Leonard C. with his FM Pro 11.0.2 upgrade problem ("cannot find a valid application"). Could not update FMP on my newish iMac, although had no problems doing so on my MacBook Pro. Had reinstalled the application from scratch, run Diskwarrior, repaired permissions, etc.
Was surprised by his Spotlight suggestion. Checked my Spotlight settings and saw that that Applications and System folder were in the Privacy pane (and recalled that at one point I had added them to avoid redundancy with Launchbar). I removed them from Privacy and let the iMac index overnight. FM Pro then updated without a problem.
Obviously, the updater uses Spotlight to find at least one of the relevant files.
    Thanks, Leonard.
    -Ken G."

    And a later reply Monday:

"I also had the FileMaker 11.0.2 update problem (Mac Pro 1.1 (Dual 2.66GHz), 10.6.4 w/all current updates) and thanks to Leonard C's tip was able to fix it by enabling Spotlight indexing of applications. It didn't fix the issue right away, the machine had to be left on for a few hours for the indexes to rebuild -- but eventually the 11.0v2 update ran without a hitch.
Thanks to Leonard and Accelerate Your Mac for the tip!
    -Andrew S."
