iOS updates for iPhone (3G/3GS/4) and iPad released
Eddie sent a note the promised iOS 4.0.1 update is out (said to correct the signal strength bars as apple noted earlier but there's also a note in an updated Sync doc. See today's Apple support doc updates listing below, which also has some related to the iPad update).
He also sent a screenshot of the iPad 3.2.1 update change notes. Here's a text version:

"This iOS software update for iPad contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
  • Improved Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail
  • Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze
  • Improved reliability of video-out when using iPod Dock connector to VGA adapter
  • Added Bing as an option for Safari's search field

Products compatible with this software update:
- iPad (Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G)"

Looking for Feedback from 2009 Mac Pro owners w/eSATA card + Bootcamp drives
I have a 2009 Mac Pro (dual 2.66ghz) with bootcamp drives (two - Win7 Pro 64bit, Vista Ult 64bit) and have used a low-cost ($20) SIL3132 eSATA card (drivers reqd - ref: my cheap eSATA cards w/10.6 article last Sept.) as well as the natively supported NewerTech 6G eSATA card (original non-PM version, still using it) without any problems booting to Bootcamp/Windows. But recently I had a 2009 Mac Pro owner write he's been unable to boot to BC/Windows drives with an eSATA card installed. (Using the PM/RAID NT 6G card and others he said - 4 different cards.) I'm not sure what his problem is but disconnecting any eSATA drives did not help. (My system boots OK regardless - the 6G eSATA card bios version is reported in DOS/command line screen at boot as well as ID of any connected drive. I'm currently using a SATA only dual-drive case mentioned in the 6G card review.)

I'm not sure what the root problem is, but since I've not seen this nor remember any other mails that I recall in the past about it, I wanted to ask for reader feedback. (He thinks I have a "magic" Mac Pro since I've never seen that problem.)
If you're using an 09 Mac Pro with any PCIe eSATA card and have bootcamp/windows drives installed, let me know if you've seen any problems booting to the BC/windows drives. Thanks.
In case it matters, please include the following:

  • Your Mac Pro's Bootrom and SMC versions (from apple system profiler),
  • If it's a Quad or 8-Core 09 Mac Pro
  • Details on Drives used (ASP will list drive firmware version as 'revision') and Bays used
  • Any Apple Bootcamp updates applied or not, Windows versions, etc.
  • Info on eSATA Card models used and slot used
  • Any other PCIe cards installed
  • Info on any connected devices (wired or BT/wireless)

I've booted to my BC drives hundreds of times w/o any problems personally, but since that reader mentioned problems with multiple cards I'm curious what could be the cause. I've used the upper/top PCIe slot for the card. Both of them have had no problems in my experience in any OS I have installed (10.6.x, 10.5.x, Vista and Win7) so far. I've used the NT 6G (non-PM) card for about 6 months to date. My Bootcamp HDs are a Seagate (7200rpm) 1.5TB (BC partition is 1TB) and an original 7K1000 1TB Hitachi (BC drives in Bay 3 and 4). And if it matters, my NT 6G (non-PM) card reports bios 1.0.0.1003 IIRC. (Will double check that.) The first reader with the problem said it was seen with 4 different cards - I wrote him to ask for the above details also.
BTW - Had one reply from a Quad-Core owner so far that said he's seen this problem about 25% of the time. (Almost made me wonder if it's a drive ready issue since it wasn't 100% of the time.) Asked for details above. Will post a separate page with my info and theirs later. Hoping for more feedback.
(Update:, I've posted a separate page on this with my system/config details and the reader's that had problems w/4 eSATA cards, but not gotten details yet from the reader that has seen the problem intermittently.)

Strange FMPro 11.0.2 upgrade problem (reader report regarding Spotlight)
(from a reader mail last week)

"For what it is worth wanted to pass the following on.
Wanted to post on a recent experience that I had with an upgrade that in many years of using the Mac I had not come across. Was trying to upgrade FileMaker Pro 11.0.1 to 11.0.2 and the installer would fail at the end claiming it could not find a valid copy of FileMaker Pro 11.0.1 to upgrade - which clearly was there and behaving normally. I did the usual stuff - rebooted, installed 11.0.1 again, started in safe mode even tried booting off second HD with simple system folder - everything failed. Talked to tech support and tried a number of things - still no joy. However suggested something to try. I do not find spotlight particularly helpful - particularly the constant indexing of drives when you often change external drives - which I do, so I limit what it searches. In particular I do not have it search applications and at least FileMaker Pro is using spotlight to find existing app to upgrade - once I turned on spotlight for applications and allow time for it to index the drive the upgrade worked.

This is not a new setting - my machine has been set this way for a long time and this is the first problem to arise.
Most people may just leave spotlight at default settings or allow it to search everything so this may not be very useful to others, but it was a bit of an eye opener to me.
Mac Pro 1.1 (Dual 2.66GHz), OS X 10.5.8 with all updates
(I asked if FMP was installed to a default location/not moved.-Mike)
Yes was in the default location - in fact have the previous four versions stacked right on top of the newly created folder for the newest version. (I wondered if having several versions present made any difference, see reply below.-Mike) It just never occurred to me that an installer would depend on Spotlight as opposed to just looking in the Application Folder directly.

Was just wanting to potentially save someone else the headache - I consider myself reasonably experienced in the way of Mac and this was totally new problem to me - and to be honest I would NEVER have thought of the connection with Spotlight as relates to an updater not working.

Also would have thought that an application that depends on Spotlight would check its status on the machine as it does allow customization, or only use it if the app was not found in its default location. Just seems pretty strange that an updater would not find the app in its default location without Spotlight or for that matter depend on any particular system app or setting. (His reply to the question about multiple versions present)
The multiple versions, once Spotlight set as required, made no difference - updater completed OK with only change being the Spotlight settings. On the external boot drive with "clean" system only had the required version installed and failed in same manor, so that was not the problem as best I can tell.
    -Leonard C."
