| PowerMac G5 Coolant Leak/Repairs page updated |
I've updated the PowerMac G5 Coolant Leaks/Repairs page again. This one had a happy ending - he was offered a free repair but after they could not source a replacement motherboard, was offered a new (quad-core) Mac Pro. I'm sure he's in the USA but wrote to confirm. (His reply added.)
Some reports in the last update (since Feb 2010) have not been so lucky so I wondered if there would be no more offers of free repairs. I won't repeat all my comments on the subject (wishing for a uniform response/policy, etc) as I know you're as tired of reading them as I am of repeatedly saying it (since 2007).
To save you a link/loading of that appx 350KB page, here's a copy of the latest report:
(From July 7th, 2010 mail)
"My late 2004 G5 died after a LCS leak (which likely started years prior). I read your website and followed the coaching you kindly provide (with AppleCare on the telephone). After being transferred to a product specialist I was asked the standard liability questions others have described and told they would be willing to fix my computer free of charge. I remained very calm and unassuming as you advised. After 21 days the local apple store administering the repairs told me because the machine was "vintage" they were unable to source a logic board replacement and offered me a new in box quad core Mac Pro. I decided to pay the difference and buy an upgraded 8-core with 12 gigs of ram. In the end it was a 2,499 credit on my tab so I spent appx 1,200.
Thank you very very much for your help; I am delighted with the new machine. The experience has left me amazed with Apple's generosity and proud to be a shareholder.
(he later wrote)
Yes this was in the US. I made the initial call late May and received my new computer in the third week of June.
-Steve Jr."
I wish all worked out so well. Until recently many reports here often noted repairs were covered (and a few noted new mac pros), but some of the latest reports were not so lucky. (And my feeling is owners outside of the US are less likely to have any offers on repairs.)
BTW - A reader that sent an article on his G5 LCS rebuild (o-ring replacement, etc.) has sent a more complete guide that I'll have posted as soon as I can convert the word doc and pix. (But it may be early next week the way things are going.)

| More iBook G4s resurrected (from local recycle bin) using Vreg solder joint repair |
| (Not had time yet to add this to the feedback section of the article.)
"I wanted to say thanks for the article on iBook G4 solder joint repair. (iBook G4 Motherboard Vreg Chip Solder Joint Repair). I used it again last weekend after picking up an iBook that was about to be put in the local BB recycle bin. Great timing on my part - I just happened to be looking out of curiosity when an older couple came in and was going to toss the iBook.
As you mention, I'm not sure if the problem will reappear in the future (from board flex over time) but regardless it was worthwhile. My wife is now using it for email/web use.
I'd been meaning to send a thank-you for the iBook repair article since fixing my son's iBook G4 last year but as always I didn't bother to take the time until now.
-Jerry"
The Thanks go to Kevan for sending the article.
