OCZ Vertex SSD drives in Macs - Question on Stuttering/Freezing problems
I had a reader send a mail saying there was a common issue with stuttering (I/O) in Macs (OS X) using Vertex SSDs (not seen in Windows) that some previous readers here may not have noticed in their initial Vertex tests/reports. [FYI - reader reports on Vertex drives here are from April and later - after common problems (including stuttering) with early drives/firmware were resolved - see reference links below.] He didn't mention specific macs, so I assumed it was not just related to problems new MacBook Pro owners have had with some non-OEM HDs (not just SSDs) after the EFI firmware Update v1.7 (released to address the complaints on sata 1.5Gbps interface speed reported).
After getting his mail I wrote all the previous readers that raved on their Vertex SSD in a Mac - the first reply so far from an iMac (2009) owner that reported on his 120GB Vertex SSD upgrade here in mid-June wrote he's not seen any problems like that. His Vertex SSD has firmware v1.30. (There's been several vertex firmware updates the last few months - a mac pro owner here in April mentioned a 1.10 firmware update, but 1.30 is the latest update at OCZ's vertex page.) Also got a reply back from Tom H. who posted here in April on a Vertex 120GB (w/firmware 1.10) in his Mac Pro that said he's seen no stuttering/pausing I/O with the drive at any time (including HD video playback tests). (Also recd a reply to this post Friday AM from a MacBook Pro (3,1 - santa rosa IIRC?) owner w/Vertex 250GB SSD (firmware 1.30) that said it's worked "flawlessly".)

With all that said, here's the email/warning about the stuttering issue:

"I saw the comment (regarding raves from readers w/OCZ Vertex drives) ... and wanted to let you know that there is a major caveat that those users probably didn't run into at their first test(s). The Vertex series has a major problem with regard to stutter in Macs for some unknown reason (this may be due to differences between Windows and OS X I/O implementations).
(The "stuttering" comment reminded me of the posts here last fall from Seagate 1.5TB owners (w/early firmware - the later firmware update fixed that and the drive failure fiasco that affected many models) - some didn't notice the problem at first but when testing movie playback found there was a stuttering problem (I/O pausing/stopping - console showed messages related to jnl). Before the firmware updates, one workaround for the stuttering was disabling journaling.-Mike)

While the Vertex series has somewhat higher top end read/write performance ratings, the Summit series does not appear to have the stutter issue (we're talking 3-5 second pauses locking up the computer completely kind of stutter) that the Vertex series has. One of the things helping the Summit series is the very large 128 MB cache vs. the 64 MB cache of the Vertex series (the earliest Vertex and the Solid series had no cache as far as I know).
(FYI - here's a Summit Series 250GB SSD review at a PC site. For those that missed earlier articles links covering issues (and concerns) on SSD drives (including stuttering problems with early Vertex drives (addressed by later changes/firmware), see reference links below.-Mike)
You'll find that the OCZ support forums are chock full of Mac users reporting stutter with the Vertex series SSDs. This does not appear to be the case with the Summit SSDs. (Both vertex and summit are MLCs, but Vertex has an Indilinx controller (w/64MB cache), the Summit a Samsung (w/128MB cache).) I'll be damned if I know why the Vertex SSDs have the stutter problem, considering that even the "paltry" 64 MB cache is quite large considering that a majority of SSDs out there have *no* cache whatsoever. The Vertex Extreme series may or may not suffer the same stutter issues - those are essentially the cheap man's equivalant to the Intel X-25E series (enhanced SLC NAND).
Oh, and don't let the Summit's lower speed ratings fool you: I get nearly a 500% speedup loading World of Warcraft and all its addons vs. my WD 1TB GreenPower HD, and that's a crapton of small 4k files there, which is where SSDs typically suffer the most. :)
I just wish I didn't have to buy an IcyDock converter for each SSD I want just to mount them properly in my Mac Pro.
- Eric"

I'm trying to get a Vertex SSD for my own tests (in a Mac Pro, I don't have a Mac notebook currently). In the meantime if any Mac/OS X users of a Vertex SSD have seen this problem, let me know the details (Mac model, your SSD drive firmware version, etc.)
BTW - I'm now reading through a long thread in OCZ's forums on problems. (From the first email I thought this was just another case of stuttering (pausing/IO stoppages) that's most noticeable on video playback - but those affected are reporting much worse/general use problems and freezes.) Most posts on problems I've seen so far there were from notebook users and several had new MacBook Pros. I'm beginning to wonder if this is just another case of problems with the new (mid-2009) MacBook Pros regarding EFI firmware v1.7. That's been a problem reported with -some- other (non-SSD) drives as well (freezes, BBOD, etc.). Several pages of posts in that thread to read still (not sure I'll get to them all, it's 4AM now). (Just saw one post saying he also had a couple freezes w/EFI 1.6 (logic board swap), not just the 1.7 EFI firmware)

FYI - I had some replies to this post that mentioned early SSD/Vertex articles from earlier this year. I'd linked to those articles in the past but here's a sample of them again. (There are later updates to drives/firmware since these articles were posted)

Mac CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade/OC database had another update this morning. Total to date: 10,380. Here's a summary of today's entry. (Search by upgrade brand, mac model, etc. for a complete list/comments of all user reports on matching criteria - latest first).

  • Sonnet Dual G4 1.8GHz (7447A) in G4 Mirror Drive Doors tower (rated 8 out of 10)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the G4 upgrade reviews and G3 upgrade reviews pages. Intel-CPU chip swaps (i.e socketed Mac Mini) and OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, send a review with your experience (performance/stability/installation, etc.), Mac Model/Upgrade brand info and overall rating (1= worst to 10=best). If you can, please run some tests with the original CPU vs the upgrade (for example time some tests with your favorite app, game, etc. - see full reviews here for example tests with common apps/games/benchmarks.)
