'Resetting' Optical Drive in Mid 2009 MacBook Pro to stop noises on boot/wake
An updated Apple doc today on MacBook Pro (Mid 2009): Multiple noises from the optical disc drive on startup or waking from sleep says you can stop the noises by resetting the optical drive:

"Occasionally, you may hear the optical disc drives produce an unusual series of noises when the computer starts up or is woken up from sleep.

Products Affected:
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009)

Resolution:
You can avoid the noise by resetting the optical drive, as in these steps and this video.

  1. Insert a CD or DVD almost all the way into the drive.

  2. Remove the disc.

  3. Insert the disc fully into the optical disc drive.

The optical drive is now reset and the noise should no longer be present when you start up or wake the computer. "

More Feedback on 2009 MacBook Pro (SATA speed) Firmware Update
A reply to Monday's news post from a 13in MBP w/WD 500GB Scorpio blue not having any problems with the updated firmware, unlike some reports in the Apple forums:

"2009 MBP EFI 1.7 firmware update report
Apparently, not everyone with the 500GB WD Scorpio Blue 2.5" hard drive is having success with the firmware being installed. Thankfully, I'm having success with mine. However, I reformatted my new drive first before cloning the old drive onto it as well, using Disk Utility. Others seem to have just switched out the drives, reinstalled the OS, and then migrated their settings, applications, etc.
-Manyue"

The mail also included a link to the same apple forum thread I posted in last Friday's news ("Mid-2009 MacBook Pro EFI firmware update 1.7 Problems"), titled Firmware update and SATA II hard drive.
